Despite their differences, the offences involved the practice of dissimulation and connected with Venice's position as a transit city, since for most offenders Venice was one among their various destinations in their peregrinations in the Mediterranean. The Thesis draws on the printed transcripts of cases involving Judaism, but also unpublished archival material in both the State archive, and the Patriarchal archive. The discussion, with close textual analysis focuses on the lengthy testimonies given before the Inquisition by a variety of people, who appeared as accusers and witnesses, and examines what they perceived as alleged crypto-Jewish and crypto-Muslim practices in the atmosphere of growing concern about religious deviance in late Renaissance Venice. It analyses the tribunal's approach to the accusations and offences, and changing patterns of practice, paying close attention to the Inquisitors' questioning strategies. As most offenders had undergone conversion, this Thesis analyses how they fashioned their identity in front of the Inquisitors who, on the basis of Church and State regulations, insisted on unambiguous religious identities. The Thesis delineates the convergences and divergences in the handling of these offences, and challenges some perceptions of power relations between accusers and accused. While following these investigations, much is revealed about communities in cosmopolitan Venice, their locations and inter-actions, and how Christian and non- Christians perceived, and mis-perceived, each other. Insights are also provided into for movements of individuals - as commercial or mercenary military purposes - in and between remoter parts of the Venetian empire and the Ottoman empire. The immense scale of this campaign and the many complications that resulted render it an exception in comparison to the rest of the judicial activity of the Roman Inquisition during this period. In Naples, judges employed some of the most violent and arbitrary procedures during the very years in which the Roman Inquisition was being remodeled into a more precise judicial system and exchanging the heavy handed methods used to eradicate Protestantism from Italy for more subtle techniques of control. The history of the Neapolitan campaign sheds new light on the history of the Roman Inquisition during the period of its greatest influence over Italian life. Though the tribunal took a place among the premier judicial institutions operating in sixteenth century Europe for its ability to dispense disinterested and objective justice, the chaotic Neapolitan campaign shows that not even a tribunal bearing all of the hallmarks of a modern judicial system-- a professionalized corps of officials, a standardized code of practice, a centralized structure of command, and attention to the rights of defendants-- could remain immune to the strong privatizing tendencies that undermined its ideals.

    BUJSS 9/2 (2016), 99-115 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18221/bujss.33634 * ETHNIC NATIONALISM AND CONSOCIATIONAL DEMOCRACY IN CYPRUS 1 Pinar Erkem ABSTRACT The 1960 Cyprus Republic, which had a bi-communal power-sharing system, could not have lasted for long and it turned from consociational democracy to majoritarian in 1963 after ethnic conflict. Attempts to find a solution to Cyprus problem still focus on ethnic power-sharing but the conditions and bi-communal relations prior to 1960 system, which are conducive to its failure, are not adequately consumed. The paper argues that, the reasons for the prolonged conflict derive from ethnic rivalry and lack of an overarching loyalty. Modernization, kin-state relations and colonial policies are the contributing factors. This paper aims to contribute to future institutional designs for not only Cyprus but for all divided societies. My intent is simply to offer for discussion some little-exploited historical materials on well-known themes that exemplify contacts between the two coasts of the Adriatic Sea, especially - but not only - during the Quattrocento. Following an overview of the history of Venetian sovereignty in that part of the Stato da mar, attention will turn to aspects of politics and society, that is, to the political, financial and monetary administration of the subject territories and to the movement of people and peoples across the Adriatic. I. AN OVERVIEW OF HISTORY AND MYTH Venetian efforts at domination of the eastern Adriatic can be said to have begun in the year 1000, with the naval expedition commanded personally by doge Pietro II Orseolo, which put an end to the activity of pirates installed at the mouth of the Narenta River and first avowed control over the Adriatic as the “Gulf of Venice.” Lordship over the Adriatic was central to Venetian historiography and mythology over the centuries: from the supposed papal grant of lordship at the peace of 1177 with Barbarossa and the ceremony each Ascension day of the doge wedding the sea, to invocations of Jove and Neptune - all depicted as part of a political program in the redecoration of the Ducal Palace after the fire of 1577 As late as the eighteenth century, Tiepolo still represented Neptune and the sea as the source of Venice’s wealth, when that was already history.

THOMSON, Antwerp The second of the two decrees on Scripture and Tradition adopted at the fourth session of the Council of Trent on 8 April 1546 stated that of all the Latin versions in circulation the Vulgate because of its centuries-old use by the Church in public services, sermons, exegesis and disputations was to be considered the authoritative one and specifi cally insisted that future editions of the Vulgate should be corrected.1 In their letter of 26 April to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589) the Council legates reported that the Council had requested that the task of revision be entrusted to the Pope2 and in his reply the Cardinal very correctly pointed out the diffi culties involved and called it una impresa troppo larga et troppo indeterminata.3 It was not until 1569, six years after the work of the Council had fi nally come to an end with the twenty-fi fth and fi nal session on 3-4 December 1563, that the commission to revise the text was formed and in November 1588 the revised text was submitted to Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590), who was so displeased with the result that he reworked it, restoring many of the previous readings. The resultant text published in April 1590 left so much to be desired that on 5 September 1590, nine days after the Pope’s death on 27 August, the College of Cardinals forbade all further sales and withdrew as many copies as possible.
