MonasticismwasborninEgyptandwasinstrumentalintheformation oftheCopticChurch'scharacterofsubmissionandhumbleness,thanks tothe teachings andwritingsoftheGreatFathersofEgypt'sDeserts. Monasticismstartedinthelastyearsofthethirdcenturyandflourished inthefourthcentury. Manyofthesemonasteries are stillflourishingandhavenewvocationstillthisday.AllChristian monasticismstems,eitherdirectlyorindirectly,fromtheEgyptian example:SaintBasil,organiserofthemonasticmovementinAsiaminor visitedEgyptaround357A.D.andhisruleisfollowedbytheeastern Churches;SaintJerome,whotranslatedtheBibleintoLatin,cameto Egyptaround400A.D.andleftdetailsofhisexperiencesinhisletters; SaintBenedictfoundedmonasteriesinthesixthcenturyonthemodelof SaintPachom,butinastricterform.Andcountlesspilgrimsvisitedthe "DesertFathers"andemulatedtheirspiritual,disciplinedlives.Thereis evenevidencethatCoptshadmissionariestoNothernEurope.One exampleisSaintMoritzoftheThebanLegion(St.Maurice)whowas draftedfromEgypttoserveundertheRomanflagandendedupteaching ChristianitytoinhabitantsoftheSwissAlps,whereasmalltownanda Monasterythatcontainshisaswellassomeofhisbooksand belongingsarenamedafterhim.AnothersaintfromtheThebanLegion is SaintVictor,knownamongCoptsas"Boktor".

UndertheauthorityoftheEasternRomanEmpireof (asopposedtothewesternempireofRome),thePatriarchsandPopesof Alexandria playedleadingrolesinChristiantheology.Theywereinvited everywheretospeakabouttheChristianfaith.SaintCyril,Popeof Alexandria,wastheheadoftheEcumenicalCouncilwhichwasheldin Ephesusintheyear430A.D.ItwassaidthatthebishopsoftheChurch ofAlexandriadidnothingbutspendalltheirtimeinmeetings.This leadingrole,however,didnotfarewellwhenpoliticsstartedto interminglewithChurchaffairs.ItallstartedwhentheEmperor MarcianusinterferedwithmattersoffaithintheChurch.Theresponse ofSaintDioscorus,thePopeofAlexandriawhowaslaterexiled,tothis interferencewasclear:"YouhavenothingtodowiththeChurch."These politicalmotivesbecameevenmoreapparentinChalcedonin451,when theCopticChurchwasunfairlyaccusedoffollowingtheteachingsof Eutyches,whobelievedinmonophysitism.Thisdoctrinemaintainsthat theLordJesusChristhasonlyonenature,thedivine,nottwonatures, thehumanaswellasthedivine.

TheCopticChurchwasmisunderstoodinthe5thcenturyatthe CouncilofChalcedon.PerhapstheCouncilunderstoodtheChurch correctly,buttheywantedtoexiletheChurch,toisolateitandtoabolish theEgyptian,independentPope,whomaintainedthatChurchandState shouldbeseparate.Despiteallofthis,theCopticChurchhasremained verystrictandsteadfastinitsfaith.Whetheritwasaconspiracyfrom theWesternChurchestoexiletheCopticChurchasapunishmentforits refusaltobepoliticallyinfluenced,orwhetherPopeDioscurusdidn't quitegotheextramiletomakethepointthatCoptsarenotmonophysite, theCopticChurchhasalwaysfeltamandatetoreconcile"semantic" differencesbetweenallChristianChurches.Thisisaptlyexpressedby thecurrent117thsuccessorofSaintMark, PopeShenoudaIII : "To the Coptic Church, faith is more important than anything, and others must know that semantics and terminology are of little importance to us." Throughoutthelastcentury,theCopticChurchhasplayedanimportant roleintheecumenicalmovement.TheCopticChurchisoneofthe foundersoftheWorldCouncilofChurches.Ithasremainedamember ofthatcouncilsince1948A.D.TheCopticChurchisamemberofthe AllAfricanCouncilofChurches(AACC)andtheMiddleEastCouncil ofChurches(MECC).TheChurchplaysanimportantroleinthe Christianmovementbyconductingdialoguesaimingatresolvingthe theologicaldifferenceswiththeCatholic,EasternOrthodox, Presbyterian,andEvangelicalChurches.

TheChristianfaceofEgyptstartedtochangebythebeginningofthe secondmillenniumA.D.,whenCopts,inadditiontothe"Gezya"tax, sufferedfromspecificdisabilities,someofwhichwereseriousand interferedwiththeirfreedomofworship.Forexample,therewere restrictionsonrepairing oldCopticChurches andbuildingnewones,on testifyingincourt,onpublicbehavior,onadoption,oninheritance,on publicreligiousactivities,andondresscodes.Slowlybutsteadily,by theendofthe12thcentury,thefaceofEgyptchangedfroma predominantlyChristiantoapredominantlyMuslimcountryandthe Copticcommunityoccupiedaninferiorpositionandlivedinsome expectationofMuslimhostility,whichperiodicallyflaredintoviolence. ItisremarkablethatthewellbeingofCoptswasmoreorlessrelatedto thewellbeingoftheirrulers.Inparticular,theCoptssufferedmostin thoseperiodswhenArabdynastieswereattheirlow.
