Silvia Di Donato, Manager of Arts & Culture, City of Kitchener, delegated the Round Table with respect to Kitchener’s Cluster Development in the Arts, and provided information on the following: • Changing Economy • Cluster Approach • Collaboration

Ms. Di Donato provided copies of the following City of Kitchener publications: • Kitchener’s new approach to Economic Development • The Start of Awesome …a look back at Downtown Kitchener in 2013 • Extraordinary Spaces – Discover Public Art in Waterloo Region

In response to questions from the Round Table, Ms. Di Donato provided information on the following related to Kitchener’s downtown: • Development of the creative economy through the cluster approach • Importance of urban living, transit and bicycle accesses, public amenities, heritage, etc. • Collaborative efforts with Kitchener’s various municipal departments • Public and private investment in buildings • Municipal support for start-up businesses • Technical amenities (i.e. superior fibre optic cable, etc.)

The following motion was considered.

Rebecca Raven, Chief Executive Officer, Brampton Library, provided a presentation entitled “Brampton Library – Downtown Cultural Contributions”, which included information on the following: • The Economic Value of Libraries • Martin Prosperity Institute Report on the Economic Impact of the Toronto Public Library on the City of Toronto • Brampton Library Downtown Branch • Wi-Fi Access in Libraries • Brampton Library Programs • Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives • Institute for Canadian Citizenship Cultural Access Pass / Culture Days • Brampton Library and the City of Brampton Strategic Plan

Round Table consideration of this matter included: • Replacement of the plaque at Church Street and Scott Street commemorating Hurricane Hazel • Potential opportunity for additional sculptures from trees lost during the December 2013 ice storm, and potential artistic uses for the tree stumps • Availability of information on the descriptions and locations of the City’s public art • Agreement with CN Rail relating to the underpasses

Sohail Saeed, Director, Economic Development and Tourism, Office of the Chief Operating Officer, provided a presentation entitled “2014 HACE Work Plan Mid-Year Update”, which included information on the following: • Round Table Vision Statement: “Downtown Brampton is the Creative Cultural Centre of the City” • Goals • Brampton Strategic Plan • 2014 Work Plan Tactics and Costs • Tactics: o 2014 HACE Events Development of a Collaborative Workspace o TM o HACE Business of the Arts Workshops Weekend o 2014 Culture Days o Creative Economy Research and Marketing o Sponsorship of Community Outreach Events o 2014 HACE Web Forum Series o HACE Youth Development Fund o Administration – HACE Program and Staff Development • Staff Recommendations

Round Table consideration of this matter included: • Importance of networking in the development of the City’s creative economy • Development and implementation of ideas learned through networking opportunities • Suggestion relating to the development of Carnegie Library as a creative economy business incubator/launch pad • Initiatives to attract more youth to the City’s downtown, i.e. Wi-Fi in Garden Square, country music night in the Square (given its increasing popularity among young people)

Staff responded to questions from the Round Table with respect to the 2014 HACE Web Forum Series, initiatives to attract more youth to the City’s downtown, operation of the Rose Theatre patio during events such as Motorcycle Mondays.

The following motion was considered.

HA013-2014 1. That the presentation by Sohail Saeed, Director, Economic Development and Tourism, Office of the Chief Operating Officer, to the HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table Meeting of June 10, 2014, re: 2014 HACE Work Plan – Mid-Year Update (File G25HACE) be received; and,

2. That staff update the Round Table on the progress of the 2014 Work Plan at future meetings.

Discussion on this matter included: • Development of a year-round indoor Farmers’ Market, including previous considerations by Council and staff • Potential locations, both City or privately owned, including Carnegie Library, Brampton Armouries and the Old Fire Hall • Suggestion to expand beyond a Farmers’ Market to a year-round Creative Economy Marketplace to include business incubation

The following motion was considered.

HA014-2014 That, it is the position of the HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table, that Council make it one of its priorities under the HACE initiative to open a year-round Creative Economy Marketplace in the downtown fostering business incubation; and further, that staff report back on potential locations, both City or privately owned, including Carnegie Library, Brampton Armouries and the Old Fire Hall.
