Approval of Agenda The following motion was considered. HA009-2014 That the agenda for the HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table Meeting of June 10, 2014 be approved as amended as follows: To add: F 1. Discussion at the request of Regional Councillor Miles, re: Year-Round Indoor Farmer’s Market (File G25HACE). Carried Note: Later in the meeting, on a two-thirds majority vote to reopen the question, the Approval of the Agenda was reopened and Item F 1 was added. B. Conflicts of Interest – nil C. Minutes C 1. Minutes – HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table – March 4, 2014 The recommendations in the subject minutes were approved by Council on April 9, 2014. The minutes were provided for the Round Table’s information. D. Delegations/Presentations D 1. Delegation: Silvia Di Donato, Manager of Arts & Culture, City of Kitchener, re: Cluster Development in the Arts (File G25HACE). Silvia Di Donato, Manager of Arts & Culture, City of Kitchener, delegated the Round Table with respect to Kitchener’s Cluster Development in the Arts, and provided information on the following: • Changing Economy • Cluster Approach • Collaboration 2014 06 10 Page 3 of 9 J1-4 Minutes HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table Ms. Di Donato provided copies of the following City of Kitchener publications: • Kitchener’s new approach to Economic Development • The Start of Awesome …a look back at Downtown Kitchener in 2013 • Extraordinary Spaces – Discover Public Art in Waterloo Region In response to questions from the Round Table, Ms. Di Donato provided information on the following related to Kitchener’s downtown: • Development of the creative economy through the cluster approach • Importance of urban living, transit and bicycle accesses, public amenities, heritage, etc. • Collaborative efforts with Kitchener’s various municipal departments • Public and private investment in buildings • Municipal support for start-up businesses • Technical amenities (i.e. superior fibre optic cable, etc.) The following motion was considered. HA010-2014 That the delegation of Silvia Di Donato, Manager of Arts & Culture, City of Kitchener, to the HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table Meeting of June 10, 2014, re: Cluster Development in the Arts (File G25HACE) be received. Carried D 2. Presentation: Rebecca Raven, Chief Executive Officer, Brampton Library, re: Brampton Library’s Contribution to the Creative Economy (File G25HACE). Rebecca Raven, Chief Executive Officer, Brampton Library, provided a presentation entitled “Brampton Library – Downtown Cultural Contributions”, which included information on the following: • The Economic Value of Libraries • Martin Prosperity Institute Report on the Economic Impact of the Toronto Public Library on the City of Toronto • Brampton Library Downtown Branch • Wi-Fi Access in Libraries • Brampton Library Programs • Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives • Institute for Canadian Citizenship Cultural Access Pass / Culture Days • Brampton Library and the City of Brampton Strategic Plan 2014 06 10 Page 4 of 9 J1-5 Minutes HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table In response to questions from the Round Table, Ms. Raven provided information on the following: • Partnership/collaboration between the Library and the creative economy • Adapting library services to accommodate the community’s evolving technical needs • Development of a main central area library branch The following motion was considered. HA011-2014 That the presentation by Rebecca Raven, Chief Executive Officer, Brampton Library, to the HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table Meeting of June 10, 2014, re: Brampton Library’s Contribution to the Creative Economy (File G25HACE) be received. Carried D 3. Presentation: Marnie Richards, Executive Director, Brampton Arts Council, re: Public Art Update (File G25HACE). Marnie Richards, Executive Director, Brampton Arts Council, provided a presentation entitled “City of Brampton’s Public Art Program”, which included information on the following: • Purpose • Objective • Program Goals • Public Art Task Force (PATF) • PATF Membership and Roles • Recent Accomplishments • Public Art Projects in 2012-2013 • Public Art and Corporate Realignment • Projects – 2014-16 Context • Cyclepath Mural Project • Downtown Brampton Underpasses • Commemorative Plaque • Churchville’s 200th Anniversary Installation • Alderlea Installation • Tree Sculptures • Community Proposed Installations • Temporary Art Installations/Displays 2014 06 10 Page 5 of 9 J1-6 Minutes HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table Round Table consideration of this matter included: • Replacement of the plaque at Church Street and Scott Street commemorating Hurricane Hazel • Potential opportunity for additional sculptures from trees lost during the December 2013 ice storm, and potential artistic uses for the tree stumps • Availability of information on the descriptions and locations of the City’s public art • Agreement with CN Rail relating to the underpasses The following motion was considered. HA012-2014 That the presentation by Marnie Richards, Executive Director, Brampton Arts Council, to the HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Meeting of June 10, 2014, re: Public Art Update (File G25HACE) be received. Carried D 4. Presentation: Sohail Saeed, Director, Economic Development and Tourism, Office of the Chief Operating Officer, re: 2014 HACE Work Plan – Mid-Year Update (File G25HACE). Sohail Saeed, Director, Economic Development and Tourism, Office of the Chief Operating Officer, provided a presentation entitled “2014 HACE Work Plan Mid-Year Update”, which included information on the following: • Round Table Vision Statement: “Downtown Brampton is the Creative Cultural Centre of the City” • Goals • Brampton Strategic Plan • 2014 Work Plan Tactics and Costs • Tactics: o 2014 HACE Events Development of a Collaborative Workspace o TM o HACE Business of the Arts Workshops Weekend o 2014 Culture Days o Creative Economy Research and Marketing o Sponsorship of Community Outreach Events o 2014 HACE Web Forum Series o HACE Youth Development Fund o Administration – HACE Program and Staff Development • Staff Recommendations 2014 06 10 Page 6 of 9 J1-7 Minutes HACE Downtown Brampton Creative Economy Round Table Round Table consideration of this matter included: • Importance of networking in the development of the City’s creative economy • Development and implementation of ideas learned through networking opportunities • Suggestion relating to the development of Carnegie Library as a creative economy business incubator/launch pad • Initiatives to attract more youth
