Welcome to madness!

where the battles are fake but the facts are real!

Pine River Library 2021 Summer Learning Program What is Mammal Madness? You've heard of March Madness basketball brackets, but this summer, the River Library is running a "Mammal Madness" competition! Each week, two will battle it out, with the winner continuing on to the next round and an overall winner being chosen on Friday, July 30. And there's a special twist to our battles: you are going to be determining the winners each week! We'll give you the situation for how the battle starts and then from there you tell us who you think would win- write it out and/or draw us a picture!

How it works Get your submissions (i.e. your completed "Ready to Rumble" sheets at the end of the packet) turned in by end of the day on Thursday for each week's battle. Just tear each "Ready to Rumble" sheet out and then drop your entry off at the library. You can also tag us in a photo of your sheet on Instagram (@pineriverlibrary) or Facebook (@Pine River Library- Bayfield's Public Library). You can also take a pic of your submission and email it to [email protected].

What are we looking for in a winning submission? Use of facts in your explanation for who won. Check out the animal fact sheets provided or do your own research! Creative & fun descriptions of why you chose a winner.

What do the winning submissions get? Weekly winners get a Pinecone gift card. Championship winner will get a stuffed animal of the winning animal! PLUS each submission is also entered for in the SLP prize drawings!

How do we find out who won each week? Winners are announced on Facebook and Instagram at noon each Friday! You can also stop by the library to see who won or give us a call at 970-884-2222 ext. 1 MY Mammal Madness Bracket

Platyzilla and the spiny anteater belong to the order Monotreme. These egg layers are mammal imposters stumping biologists around the world. They lay eggs but they also produce milk for their young. Here is where it gets gross: they sweat milk out of their pores! So while they do not actually have mammary glands to nurse from, their young do consume milk. These animals also both have electroreceptors, which basically means they can sense prey through their noses/bills! These receptors work better in water, which is why platyzilla has more!
