Botti was born in Portland, Or- egon and raised in Corvallis, Oregon. He spent two years of his childhood growing up in Italy. His earliest musi- cal influence was his mother, a clas- sically trained pianist and part-time piano teacher. He started playing the trumpet at 9-years-old and committed to the instrument at age 12, when he heard Miles Davis play “My Funny Valentine.” At the age of 17, he ended up at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon by convincing his high school to allow him to fulfill his remaining senior year credits there. Botti constructed the scenario so that he could also play at Portland clubs in the evening. After graduating from high school, Botti studied under jazz educator David Baker and trumpet professor Bill Adam at Indiana Uni- versity. Botti was also the recipient of two grants from the National Endow- ment for the Arts which allowed him to study with trumpeter Woody Shaw and saxophonist George Coleman during two consecutive summer breaks. Following up on the success of Rhythm and Ro- mance, his first Latin jazz album and his Concord debut in 2008, Heart and Soul captures the spirit and the vibe of the classic R&B that Kenny grew up listen- ing to in his native Seattle. In many aspects it took him back to the beginning of his career - the R&B of the early and mid 1970s that Kenny soaked up during his teen years at an inner-city Seattle high school where he mixed with a culturally diverse student body at a young age. Inspired by the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire and Gro- ver Washington, Jr., he was only 17 when he landed a gig with Barry White and his Love Unlimited Orchestra at the Paramount Northwest Theater (now the Paramount Theater) in 1973. After high school, the gigs with R&B and con- temporary jazz artists like White and Jeff Lorber kept coming. In 1982, he landed a record deal with Arista and launched a solo career with three critically acclaimed jazz albums - Kenny G photo by Randee St Nicholas (1982), G-Force (1983) and March 29, 8 PM, at the King Center, Melbourne Gravity (1985). • PROJECT Trio CD
Project Trio- Instrumental CD Review By Daniel Hautzinger It’s not easy to be unique. In music especially, it seems like every good band name has already been taken, every genre tried (witch house anyone?), and every ensemble “sound” already stamped by someone else. Even so, I don’t know of another group like PROJECT Trio, which consists of a cellist, double bassist, and beat-boxing flutist, all classically trained, who play jazz, classical, Latin, and a combination of those and other genres. But idiosyncratic instrumentation and style don’t remove an artist from other influences. Instrumental, PROJECT Trio’s latest recording for their label Harmonyville Records, contains buoyant and groove-based songs that often seem to reference other artists or genres, but played on flute, cello, and bass. Despite the hodgepodge of styles on Instrumental, many of the tracks share a pleasing effervescence. It’s easy to imagine many of these songs soundtracking Sesame Street, with their sunniness, playfulness and unpretentious pleasure. The best instance of this is Now, which has the catchiest groove and cello lines from Eric Stephenson that recall Yo- Yo Ma’s Goat Rodeo Sessions. 99 Mondays is a refreshing, atmospheric track built off Greg Pattillo’s overlapping flute curlicues and Peter Seymour’s resounding bass notes that calls to mind the classical pieces of Bryce Dessner or Richard Reed Parry. 2against3, with its painfully obvious title, uses the eponymous cross-rhythm as accompaniment for a simple and tender melody. It’s also an instance of one of this recording’s weaknesses: many of the songs are disjunct, with middle sections that sound like a new song reliably appearing halfway through many of the tracks.

Racial Gatekeeping in Country & Hip-Hop Music By Cervanté Pope Student ID #: 947767021 Portland State University Pope 2 Introduction In mass communication, gatekeeping refers to how information is edited, shaped and controlled in efforts to construct a “social reality” (Shoemaker, Eichholz, Kim, & Wrigley, 2001). Gatekeeping has expanded into other fields throughout the years, with its concepts growing more and more easily applicable in many other aspects of life. One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one’s cultural history and identity preserved.

Contact: [email protected] Choutouts: Language contact and US-Latin hip hop on YouTube Matt Garley This paper presents a corpus-sociolinguistic analysis of lyrics and com- ments from videos for four US-Latinx hip hop songs on YouTube. A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties. Keywords: Latinx, hip hop, orthography, codemeshing, language contact, language attitudes, language ideologies, computer-mediated discourse. Choutouts: contacto lingüístico y el hip hop latinx-estadounidense en YouTube. Este estudio presenta un análisis sociolingüístico de letras de canciones y comentarios de cuatro videos de hip hop latinx-esta- dounidenses en YouTube.

  • TEG 74001 MUDDY WATERS Unk in Funk CD
MUDDY WATERS “UNK” IN FUNK 1. Rollin’ And Tumblin’ 2. Just To Be With You 3. Electric Man 4. Trouble No More 5. “Unk” In Funk 6. Drive My Blues Away 7. Katie 8. Waterboy Waterboy 9. Everything Gonna Be Alright "Unk" In Funk, Muddy Waters' 1974 release, saw the Chicago bluesman further building on the electric blues of albums like Electric Mud (1968) and After The Rain (1969). It would be one of the last collections of original material that Waters would record with Chess Records, after a nearly 30-year association with the label. The record included a core line up of famed blues players who would remain Waters' backing band for the duration of his career, featuring Pinetop Perkins on piano, (Earl Hooker) Luther Johnson (The Nighthawks) and Bob Margolin on guitar, Calvin "Fuzz" Jones on bass, (The Legendary Blues Band) and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on drums, (Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker) with additional guest appearances by George Buford, Paul Oscher (Louisiana Red), and Carey Bell (Willie Dixon) on harmonica. Even at the age of 61, Waters sounds at the top of his game on "Unk" In Funk. His booming, powerful blues vocals dominate the album's fuzzy, electric orchestration. Overhauled versions of Waters classics like "Rollin' and Tumblin'" and "Just To Be With You" sound fresh as ever, and newer tracks like "Katie" and "Waterboy, Waterboy" are classic and organic additions to Waters' discography. Overlooked and underrated in its time, "Unk" In Funk is a pinnacle album from Waters' catalog. Format: CD Cat. No: TEG74001-CD Label: Traffic Entertainment Group Available: AUGUST 13th, 2013 CHESS CD.
