That’s exactly what Termanology is doing on his upcoming new album; letting his music do the talking. A lot has changed since Term initially cut his teeth with several highly acclaimed 12" singles and a debut album, Politics As Usual (2008), that included a Mt. Rushmore like array of producers (DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Havoc, Alchemist, Hi-Tek, Buckwild & Nottz) which garnered tons of praise landing him in The Source's "Unsigned Hype" and XXL's "Show and Prove" columns. Since, he has released a collaborative effort with M.O.P.’s Lil Fame (Fizzyology) and two-projects under the moniker 1982 with his brother from another mother Statik Selektah. Term has been included on BET and MTV, and spent a ton of time in 2014 touring, promoting the albums 'GOYA' and 'MAS GOYA', in over twenty European countries on the Rap Mayhem Tour which featured Step Brothers Madchild, and DJ Revolution, and recent dates in Japan with DJ Tony Touch. However, the one constant throughout has always been Term’s ability to spit. Shut Up And Rap boasts sixteen-tracks and features guest appearances from the legendary INS Deck, M.O.P.’s Lil Fame, Skyzoo, Torae, Slaine, Willie The Kid, DJ Doo Wop and REKS. Billy Loman supplies the majority of the soundscape for Shut Up And Rap, but Term contin- ues to show his diversity and flexes his production muscle for one track and Alchemist and Statik Selektah join forces to co-produce the super-banger “El Wave.” Term says: "A big part of this album is breaking new talent... a lot of times in the past I was focused on getting the biggest names on my albums, but this one was less about status and more about dudes who can just plain spit, regardless of their fame..." Journal of Popular Music Education Special issue on Hip-hop Hip-Hop Pedagogy as Production Practice: Reverse-Engineering the Sample-Based Aesthetic Mike Exarchos (a.k.a. Stereo Mike) | London College of Music (University of West London) Introduction Hip-hop1 production practice contains a rich matrix of creative methods within its paradigm, which have the potential to inform and inspire music production pedagogy in higher education. The techno-artistic trajectory of rap production consists of numerous phases that may involve live performance, recording, sampling, synthesis, programming, mixing and mastering. Furthermore, it is not rare for self-contained processes—such as interpolation2 and the creation of content for sampling—to be actualized as developmental phases within the larger production trajectory. The well-documented issues affecting phonographic sampling have given rise to alternative practices, inviting live instrumental musicianship within hip-hop music-making, but also a dependence on synthesized sonics (often as signifiers of geographical and stylistic divergence). As a consequence, contemporary hip-hop production—arguably more than any other commercial music-making form—can provide a dynamic, applied context for the exploration, implementation, interplay and interaction of most phonographic stages conceived of and practiced within popular music production. This is not to say that other musics do not deploy multiple methods within their production processes, or that Hip-Hop exemplifies a sole case of multi-layered—or bricolage—production. After all, many popular musics have borrowed from hip-hop practices, and the rap production paradigm can be traced outside of strict stylistic barriers 1 The terms ‘Hip-Hop’ and ‘Rap’ will be used interchangeably throughout the paper, referring to the musical genre, outputs and practices associated with hip-hop culture and art.

Contact: [email protected] Choutouts: Language contact and US-Latin hip hop on YouTube Matt Garley This paper presents a corpus-sociolinguistic analysis of lyrics and com- ments from videos for four US-Latinx hip hop songs on YouTube. A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties.
