Bilder .......................................................................................................................................... 514 Vorwort Moritz Moszkowski (1854–1925) war zu seinen Lebzeiten ein bekannter Pädagoge, Komponist und Pianist. Seine ausgeprägte melodische Motivation, eindrucksvolle Virtuosität und sein eleganter Stil trafen den Zeitgeschmack vor der vorletz- ten Jahrhundertwende und sicherten ihm eine herausragende Stellung in der Musikwelt. Die Wissenschaft hat sein kompositorisches Werk bisher nicht seiner zeitgenössischen Bedeutung entsprechend gewürdigt. Er findet hier und da Erwähnung in zusammenfassenden Katalogisierungen von Klavierkomponisten der Spätromantik. Lexikalische Einträge tragen falsche Daten und weisen große Lücken in den Werklisten auf. Studien und Verzeichnisse zum Gesamtschaffen und zum Leben fehlen. Mit diesem systematischen Werkverzeichnis, um biographische Studien ergänzt, wird die Grundlage für eine Aufarbeitung geschaffen. In die vorlie- gende Skizze seines Lebens und das anschließende Moszkowski-Werkverzeichnis sind die Ergebnisse der Auswertung der vollständigen Korrespondenz mit dem Verlag C. F. Peters aus dem Sächsischen Staatsarchiv in Leipzig und von Tage- und Notizbüchern aus einem Nachlass in der Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris mit eingeflossen. Den Höhepunkt der Nachforschung bildet der Fund unveröffent- lichter Jugendwerke. Als eines der wichtigsten kann das Klavierkonzert gelten, das er 1875 mit Franz Liszt an zwei Klavieren aufführte.1 Die Begeisterung des Weimarer Meisters für Moszkowskis Virtuosität beflügelte dessen pianistische und komposito- rische Karriere und wird heute noch in nahezu jeder biographischen Skizze erwähnt. Es gab außerdem Hinweise auf zwei Sinfonien und ein Quintett in Manuskriptform.2 Diese Stücke galten als verschollen. Im Rahmen der Recherche entdeckte der Autor die Manuskripte dieser Kompositionen im Musikarchiv der französischen Nationalbibliothek in Paris.3 Da Moszkowskis Handschriften weitgehend verloren sind, gehören diese Kompositionen jetzt zu den wenigen bekannten Autographen. 1 Das frühe Klavierkonzert in h-Moll wird in diesem Verzeichnis als Opus 3 MoszWV 160 eingeordnet. 2 Vgl.     MORITZ MOSZKOWSKI: PIANO MUSIC, VOLUME ONE by Martin Eastick ‘After Chopin, Moszkowski best understands how to write for the piano, and his writing embraces the whole gamut of piano technique’.1 Paderewski’s oft-repeated endorsement of his fellow countryman’s reputation offers an idea of the high esteem in which Moszkowski was once held – certainly at the pinnacle of his achievement during the closing years of the nineteenth century. The more sober artistic climate of the early 21st seems to have less time for music now regarded as the frivolity of a more innocent age. Moszkowski’s piano music had indeed been very popular, but a gradual decline set in after the cultural and social changes brought about by the Great War. Just occasionally, during the past hundred or so years since his death in 1925, the odd Moszkowski bon-bon – perhaps his ‘Étincelles’ (the sixth of his Huit Morceaux Caractéristiques, Op. 36), or the Caprice espagnole, Op. 37 – has provided a recital encore by some enterprising pianist. Moszkowski came from a wealthy Polish-Jewish family which had settled in Breslau (now the Polish city of Wrocław, but then the capital of Silesia in East Prussia) in 1854, the year of his birth. Having displayed a natural talent for music from an early age, and with some basic home tuition, he began his formal musical education in 1865, after his family’s relocation to Dresden. A further family move, to Berlin, in 1869, enabled Moszkowski to continue his musical education – first at Julius Stern’s Conservatorium (which still exists, as part of the Faculty of Music of the Berlin University of the Arts), where he studied piano with the composer- pianist Eduard Franck (1817–93) and composition with the famous theoretician and composer Friedrich Kiel (1821–85).

Among the famous composers, pianists or conductors who admired their work and performed their music were Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Brahms, Busoni and Richter. Philipp Scharwenka (1847-1917) was one of the last Genius German romantic composers after Schumann and Mendelssohn. He was also a talented pianist and a highly respected teacher. His younger brother Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924) was a wonderful pianist and composer as well. Both were born in the village of Samter, near Posen (now Poznan). In 1919, the province became part of Poland. In 1858, the Scharwenka's family decided to move to Posen where the two young boys received a solid education. Moving again in 1865, they went to Berlin. Encouraged by their father, the two gifted boys entered the famous New Academy of Music (Neue Akademie der Tonkunst) founded by the highly respected pianist Theodor Kullak. Xaver focused on his piano's technique and virtuosity. He also learned composition. Philipp studied composition with Richard Wuerst and Heinrich Dorn. In less than three years, Philipp achieved his studies. In 1869, he was appointed Music Theory instructor. His first compositions were published and premiered in 1874.     PHILIPP SCHARWENKA: PIANO MUSIC, VOLUME ONE by William Melton In 1844, August Wilhelm Scharwenka, an architect of Prussian and Bohemian roots and Protestant faith, married Apollonia Emilia, née Golisch, a Polish Catholic, in the district of Samter in the Prussian province of Posen (now Szamotuly, Poznań, in Poland). The couple’s first child, (Ludwig) Philipp, was born on 16 February 1847. As Philipp recalled, Father was very capable and sought after in his field, but was an especially excellent draftsman and water-colourist; still, mother was responsible for our musical talent; at her instigation a piano was brought into the house and the cantor of the Protestant church was engaged as teacher.1 Philipp was nearly three years old when his younger brother Xaver was born. The family relocated to the provincial capital of Posen in 1859, and Philipp attended a classical gymnasium while privately delving into musical theory. He later told an interviewer: The piano-instruction, as was natural in our provincial city, was in the hands of several ‘Knights of the Stiff Wrist’, and in consequence really served as a guide as to how not to play. To the best of my knowledge, there was not in Posen, at that time, a teacher who was in the position to give instruction in harmony and the other branches of musical science necessary to composition. If we young fellows were almost wholly denied the opportunity to study music seriously and scientifically, so much the more did a ‘free art’ develop among us. He attended the Johann Buwa Piano Academy where he developed his virtuosic piano talents and also taught himself to play the cello and violin at that time. At the University of Graz, he studied with Erich Degner and took courses in musicology. He later taught theory and composition at the Vienna Academy of Music (afterwards the Hochschule für Musik) and became its director and taught there for the next 30 years. He was also an inflential music critic. He composed orchestral, chamber, choral and a vast number of vocal works.
