While most reference texts teach that the villanelle's nineteen-line alternating-refrain form was codified in the Renaissance, the scholar Julie Kane has conclusively shown that Jean Passerat's "Villanelle" ("J'ay perdu ma Tourterelle"), written in 1574 and first published in 1606, is the only Renaissance example of this form. My own research has discovered that the nineteenth-century "revival" of the villanelle stems from an 1844 treatise by a little- known French Romantic poet-critic named Wilhelm Ténint. My study traces the villanelle first from its highly mythologized origin in the humanism of Renaissance France to its deployment in French post-Romantic and English Parnassian and Decadent verse, then from its bare survival in the period of high modernism to its minor revival by mid-century modernists, concluding with its prominence in the polyvocal culture wars of Anglophone poetry ever since Elizabeth Bishop’s "One Art" (1976). The villanelle might justly be called the only fixed form of contemporary invention in English; contemporary poets may be attracted to the form because it connotes tradition without bearing the burden of tradition. Poets and scholars have neither wanted nor needed to know that the villanelle is not an archaic, foreign form. -

The dams would have flooded the canyons of the Green and its tributary, Yampa, inundating the heart of Dinosaur National Monument. Troubadour Concerts Resume Friday We’re Back in the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship on Sept. 3 After 18 months of hiatus, the lights will be back on at the Troubadour Acoustic Concert series, resuming an otherwise almost continuous 47-year history of presenting concerts and Open stages. It will be a welcome event for the whole crew of the Troubadour as well as the throngs who will attend the opening concert with Mike Agranoff and the Annie Donahue Trio on September 3. It will largely be a continuation of our pre-COVID operation, but there will be some changes. In recogni- tion of the tail end of the Pandemic, we will be requiring the wearing of face coverings inside the building. And to further ensure everyone’s safety, we will be limiting attendance to only those who have been fully vaccinated. We will be checking proof of vaccination at the door. (Please don’t assume this is only a formality. No proof, no admission.) These restrictions will be amended over time as COVID conditions and the directives of medical authorities change. There will be some positive changes as well. We will also be resuming live-streaming our con- certs that ended with the demise of Concert Window in September of 2019. -

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS TO THE NS-FRAUENSHCAFT/DEUTSCHES FRAUENWERK Introduction Berlin Document Center (BDC) biographic records include membership information for approximately 3.5 million members of the NS Frauenschaft and Deutsches Frauenwerk (National Socialist Women’s Organization), which directed the activities of various women’s organizations in Nazi Germany. Included among the latter were professional organizations, NSDAP women’s auxiliary formations, and humanitarian and educational groups during the 1931-45 period. As with other ‘front’ organizations, NSDAP membership was not required, so that many individuals documented here are not found elsewhere among BDC biographic collections. The Records are organized in two series, reproduced on 2,418 microfilm rolls. The earliest Frauenschaft organizations came into existence in October 1931 as NSDAP women’s auxiliaries. After Hitler came to power in January 1933, the NS-Frauenschaft served as the means by which existing women’s organizations were brought into line with National Socialist principles. Under the direction of Reichsfauenführerin Gertrud Scholtz-Klink, it specialized in political indoctrination of such varied organizations as the Reichsgemeinschaft Deutscher Hausfauen (Reich Community of German Housewives), Bund Deutscher Ärztinnen (League of German Female Physicians), and others. Course Description and Learning Outcomes The aims of this course consist in making students familiar with the basic rules of doing comparative research and introducing the most influential approaches and salient topics in comparative political science. The course, thus, will help students to evaluate the methodological merits of those political science publications that use a comparative approach, to recognize which intellectual tradition they belong to, and to design their own comparative research strategy. During the course work, students are asked to write small position papers, several written exercises, to actively participate during in-class discussions, and to prepare in-class presentations. The position papers are expected to help develop the ability to synthesize the information gathered from the mandatory readings, determine a focus point, and to develop a coherent line of argumentation. The written exercises are expected to improve the ability to generate logical, plausible, and persuasive arguments, to compare and contrast, and to derive theoretical conclusions from comparative empirical observations. The emphasis on in-class participation and in-class presentations is meant to foster the skills of expressing informative reflections 'on the spot' and to decrease potential fears of speaking in Carsten Q.
