INTRODUCTION There are many different aspects of German research that could and maybe should be covered; but it is not the intention of this book even to try to cover the majority of these. Too often when genealogical texts are written on German research, the tendency has been to generalize. Because of the historical, political, and environmental background of this country, that is one thing that should not be done. In Germany the records vary as far as types, time period, contents, and use from one kingdom to the next and even between areas within the same kingdom. In addition to the variation in record types there are also research problems concerning the use of different calendars and naming practices that also vary from area to area. Before one can successfully begin doing research in Germany there are certain things that he must know. There are certain references, problems and procedures that will affect how one does research regardless of the area in Germany where he intends to do research. The purpose of this book is to set forth those things that a person must know and do to succeed in his Germanic research, whether he is just beginning or whether he is advanced. -

A Message from the Dean It seems appropriate at this time of the year to briefly give a “State of The Union” report on the School of Medicine. Simply stated, the School of Medicine is strong and rapidly moving forward and fulfilling all of our critical missions – teaching, clinical care, and research. Our applicants are among the brightest students in the State, our clinical activity has more than doubled, our research grants are among the highest in years, and our graduates are choosing to stay in our programs and in Louisiana at levels not seen in over 10 years. This is all due in large measure to our outstanding faculty, our continued ability to recruit strong candidates from across the country and the ongoing strong support of our alumni. All of this has occurred during a period of decreased funding for higher education. However, this continued trend of decreased support for higher education, and specifically for the Health Sciences Center and School of Medicine, will impede our ability to educate and train the physicians that will care for your family and mine. As you are well aware, 70% of physicians who practice in Louisiana trained in one of our facilities. It is also clear that a vibrant health sciences center yields high-skill, high-wage jobs that will drive our State’s economy and revitalize our communities. With these thoughts in mind, I would like to share with you a piece that was published in the Times-Picayune. I would urge you to seize whatever opportunity was afforded you to voice your strong support for our School and funding for higher education. -

(Author/Creator) Abstract The St. Aloysius Orphanage was established in 1837 in Cincinnati, OH. The St. Aloysius Orphanage records include vital records for the orphans, operational and financial material, publications, and other material. Also in this collection are board minutes and membership material for the St. Aloysius Orphan Society and Ladies Auxiliary: two organizations that financed and managed the orphanage. Call Number Mss 1098 Repository Cincinnati History Library and Archives, Cincinnati Museum Center, 1301 Western Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45203, USA Scope and Content The St. Aloysius Orphanage Records consist of 97 boxes (71 cubic feet). The collection consists of two main types of material: vertical files and horizontal ledgers or scrapbooks. The records are organized first into series and sub-series and then by material type and lastly chronologically, unless otherwise stated. Most of the records written before 1920's are in German. Also many of the older ledgers are in poor condition and may not be available for unrestricted use. Series 1, Vital Records, is divided into five subseries. Most of the material documenting the children who stayed at the orphanage is located in this series. Generally records of the children are minimal in the first 80 years of the orphanage. Sub-series 1A, Census/Admission and Dismissals, documents the children admitted to the orphanage. -
