A Message from the Dean It seems appropriate at this time of the year to briefly give a “State of The Union” report on the School of Medicine. Simply stated, the School of Medicine is strong and rapidly moving forward and fulfilling all of our critical missions – teaching, clinical care, and research. Our applicants are among the brightest students in the State, our clinical activity has more than doubled, our research grants are among the highest in years, and our graduates are choosing to stay in our programs and in Louisiana at levels not seen in over 10 years. This is all due in large measure to our outstanding faculty, our continued ability to recruit strong candidates from across the country and the ongoing strong support of our alumni. All of this has occurred during a period of decreased funding for higher education. However, this continued trend of decreased support for higher education, and specifically for the Health Sciences Center and School of Medicine, will impede our ability to educate and train the physicians that will care for your family and mine. As you are well aware, 70% of physicians who practice in Louisiana trained in one of our facilities. It is also clear that a vibrant health sciences center yields high-skill, high-wage jobs that will drive our State’s economy and revitalize our communities. With these thoughts in mind, I would like to share with you a piece that was published in the Times-Picayune. I would urge you to seize whatever opportunity was afforded you to voice your strong support for our School and funding for higher education. Dreams are Built on Education Steve Nelson, MD ¾ Published in The Times Picayune I am the son of immigrant parents who came to this country to find a better life for themselves and their children. Throughout my childhood my parents stressed the importance of an education and doing well in school. I attended public schools and a state university. There is no doubt that any measure of success that I have attained is directly related to my good fortune to have been taught by a dedicated group of teachers who took great pride and satisfaction in their profession. The current crisis in higher education in our state is threatening the future of your children and mine. Does anyone truly believe that the current and proposed cuts in higher education will in any way improve the education that our children receive? What is the message that we are sending to our children? Will they be prepared to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market? When you and I were young, we dreamed of what we would become as adults. A doctor? A lawyer? An engineer? A fireman? A teacher? Shouldn’t our children be able to dream as well? A strong education should be a basic right guaranteed to all of our children. Without it, our wish for a brighter future for our children will never come true. Sincerely, Steve Nelson, MD, Dean LSUHSC School of Medicine 2 Honor Roll 2010 / LSU Medicinews Spring ’11 — Combined Edition www.medschool.lsuhsc.edu/alumni_affairs Steering Terence Beven (’57) Darryl J.
