We have sad news. Sonja Savig died on February 8th. In addition to being a wonderful performer, Sonja was a master teacher who taught many club members to sing better. Last night, I placed her album, Nu Takk for Alt (Now Thanks for Everything) on the turntable and, once again, listened to her mellifluous voice singing her beloved Norwegian folk songs. Goodbye, Sonja. We will miss you. Condolences to the family can be sent c/o Sonja’s nephew: Berndt Savig, 1406 Lake Shore Drive, Boulder, CO 80302. Clarice writes about the role of FMSNY in Jackson Heights where folk music is thriving: “Although FSMNY is not officially based in Jackson Heights, many of its governing board members have lived in the community since the group’s inception—bringing friends and romantic partners to join them.” To read the rest of this lively and informative piece, go to: http://bit.ly/JHtsArticle Susan Bady has adopted two “rescue cats.” They are siblings, now named Zsa Zsa and Boychik. Susan, a psychotherapist, is training them to follow in the pawprints of their predecessors, Boots and Tiger, who were highly skilled therapy cats. Boots and Tiger lived until ripe old age and worked with Susan as a team. Susan calls them the “dream team.” During sessions, Tiger sat on Susan’s lap while Boots sat on the patient’s lap. Zsa Zsa and Boychik are beginning to do the same thing. Susan’s account of her Freudian felines got me wondering about what other interesting stories are out there about members’ pets. Please send them in. I would like to collect and then assemble them together in this column. The [money] you gave us allowed many people to attend who would not have been able to without financial assistance (both young and youngatheart singers). It has also allowed us to offer travel stipends both to staff and to attendees. ... At YTS, our mission is to create an accessible environment for singers, especially young singers, to learn and build community with each other. We are grateful for your contribution and your support, both now and over the years as we've grown. We look forward to singing with you all at YTS if you're coming, and at many great song events in the future! We hope you're well and staying warm! With gratitude and songs, The Youth Traditional Song Weekend Organizing Committee
