Illyrian-Albanian Continuity on the Areal of Kosova 29 Illyrian-Albanian Continuity on the Areal of Kosova Jahja Drançolli* Abstract In the present study it is examined the issue of Illyrian- Albanian continuity in the areal of Kosova, a scientific problem, which, due to the reasons of daily policy, has extremely become exploited (harnessed) until the present days. The politicisation of the ancient history of Kosova begins with the Eastern Crisis, a time when the programmes of Great-Serb aggression for the Balkans started being drafted. These programmes, inspired by the extra-scientific history dressed in myths, legends and folk songs, expressed the Serb aspirations to look for their cradle in Kosova, Vojvodina. Croatia, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Montenegro. Such programmes, based on the instrumentalized history, have always been strongly supported by the political circles on the occasion of great historical changes, that have overwhelmed the Balkans. Key Words: Dardania and Dardans in antiquity, Arbers and Kosova during the Middle Ages, geopolitical, ethnic, religious and cultural concepts, which are known in the sources of that time followed by a chronological development. The region of Kosova preserves archeological monuments from the beginnings of Neolith (6000-2600 B.C.). Since that time the first settlements were constructed, including Tjerrtorja (Prishtinë), Glladnica (Graçanicë), Rakoshi (Istog), Fafos and Lushta (Mitrovicë), Reshtan and Hisar (Suharekë), Runik (Skenderaj) etc. The region of Kosova has since the Bronze Age been inhabited by Dardan Illyrians; the territory of extension of this region was much larger than the present-day territory of Kosova. * Prof. Jahja Drançolli Ph. • Development of Ragusan Diplomatic Service in the First Half of the Fifteenth Century
Development of Ragusan Diplomatic Service in the First Half of the Fifteenth Century Father and Son at the Court of Duke Sandalj Hranić Valentina Zovko One of the signi#$cant characteristics of the Ragusan foreign afairs during the medieval period was avoiding armed con%&icts. When the authorities did not manage to implement this endeavour, diplomacy played an important role in attempts to end them and insure damage reparations. In the #$rst half of the #$fteenth century the city of Dubrovnik was involved in Ragusan- Bosnian war (1403-1404) and the War of Konavle (1430-1433). During both con%&icts the government turned for help to Duke Sandalj Hranić of Bosnia. During the #$rst war, duke was in the process of rising to his fame, and the ending of this particular war, that brought Ostoja’s dethronisation and the fall of the Sanković family, marked Hranić’s rise to power. During the second war he was the key partner in Dubrovnik`s plan of destroying the hostile family Pavlović of Bosnia. The importance of Duke Sandalj for the outcome of these con%&icts sets the assumption that the government carefully took into account to select the most skilled noble for a holder of the mission. Marin, son of Ni#$ko de Gondula (around 1355-1405) 1 and his son Benedict (around 1390-1446) 2 received this con#$dence. It is interesting to notice that almost none of them had had an earlier experience in the service. 3 On the other hand, they took advantage of the ‘symbolic capital’ of their predecessors that enjoyed high political and social reputations in ful#$lling diplomatic missions.

  • Venetian Public Debt Servicing and Precious Metals from the Balkans
My ships come home a month before the day: Venetian public debt servicing and precious metals from the Balkans Miloš Božović Faculty of Economics University of Belgrade Kamenička 6 11000 Belgrade, Serbia Email: [email protected] This draft: January, 2017 1 Abstract Was monetary base crucial for early sovereign debt sustainability? This paper analyses whether Venetian public debt servicing costs in the late medieval period were driven by the availability of gold and silver. We use an error correction model to describe changes in yields on perpetual bonds issued by the Venetian state. We document that the ability of the Venetian Republic to service its sovereign borrowing can be partially attributed to supply of precious metals. In particular, we show that the large increase in debt servicing costs during the 15th century can be associated with an abrupt halt in supply of gold and silver from mines in Serbia and Bosnia – mostly a consequence of the Ottoman western expansion. We control for other explanatory factors, such as mean reversion of nominal yield, real GDP growth and military conflicts. JEL classifications: N23, E44, E51, F34 Keywords: Venetian prestiti; sovereign debt; monetary base; precious metals; late medieval mines 2 1. INTRODUCTION In the post-crisis era of quantitative easing, we naturally associate monetary policy with central banks. However, even in the days of commodity money, when modern instruments and institutions did not exist yet, sovereign debt monetisation was nevertheless a common practice. Is there a deeper link between monetary base and sovereign debt sustainability? Which lessons could be learned from the early days of public debt, when there were no central monethary authorities? The story of late medieval Venice may provide some of the answers.
