Monday 11 July 2016, London. This Halloween BFI Southbank will host the Science Fiction Double Feature Picture Show, the ultimate celebration of all things Rocky Horror. The event on Saturday 29 October will include ‘shadow cast’ screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Jim Sharman, 1975) starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and original creator Richard O’Brien, and the often over-looked sequel Shock Treatment (Jim Sharman, 1981), starring O’Brien and Patricia Quinn alongside famous faces like Ruby Wax, Rik Mayall and Barry Humphries. The screenings mark the 35th anniversary of the release of Shock Treatment. A unique experience for super-fans and the uninitiated alike, the ‘shadow cast’ will see an international cast of Rocky Horror performers from the UK, US and Europe take to the stage to perform numbers from both films live, while the films screen in the background. Following the screening of Shock Treatment cast and crew will reunite for a celebratory panel discussion to mark the anniversary. Audiences are then invited to join us in the Benugo Bar and Kitchen afterwards for the Time Warp Ball, complete with Transylvanian cocktails and spooky tunes. ‘G IVE YOURSELVES OVER TO ABSOLUTE PLEASURE ’: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW ’S QUEERING OF COUNTERCULTURE FILM Monica MICHLIN Université Paris IV - Sorbonne Jim Sharman’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), the filmic adaptation of the Richard O’Brien musical, stands out among other musical films of the counter-culture. It is remarkable for its excess, its energy, its humor, its mocking of traditional gender codes and its pronounced taste for the “visually abysmal” both in the meaning of camp and its mise en abyme of icons of both high and low visual culture—from Michelangelo’s David to Charles Atlas ads, and from Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931) to King Kong (Cooper and Schoedsack, 1933) to The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939)—in a pastiche and parody of genre films. While it is, itself, a hodge-podge of musical 1 and horror story, a warped romantic comedy and a science fiction farce, it deploys its unique countercultural energy in its Dionysian celebration of its queer main character, Dr. Frank’n’Furter, a transvestite avatar of Dr. Frankenstein, played by Tim Curry. In highlighting how its queering of genres is meshed with the queering of gender, and the hedonistic celebration of “performance,” I will stress how the film’s deliberately provocative visual and narrative techniques, as well as its constant celebration of excess and chaos prompt the audience to warp it in turn and, in a mise en abyme of the carnivalesque, to break down the fourth wall in the way fan communities started to do one year after the film’s release, in midnight performances, arguably making it to this day the ultimate cult film of the mid-seventies. -

Many of us also work on behalf of millions of adult adoptees in the United States, including more than 600,000 in New York, who seek to restore the right of adult adoptees to obtain their own original birth certificates (OBC), without restriction or condition. We are united in requesting: 1. Your veto of A5036B/S4845B (“A5036B”), which if enacted will continue to abrogate the rights of New York adoptees; 2. Your return of A5036B to the New York State Assembly with a note to move forward on a different, better, and fiscally responsible bill that provides actual and genuine equality for adult adoptees; and 3. Your support of currently active adoptee rights companion bills in the New York State Assembly and Senate (S5169A/A6821A). Unlike A5036B, these bills unequivocally restore the right of New York adult adoptees to access their own original birth certificates. They recognize that New York’s outdated 1930s-era adoption policies do not promote anyone’s rights, particularly in the age of DNA tests, genetic genealogy, social media, and other technological advances that have made adoption secrecy obsolete. What A5036B Does A5036B is not an adoptee rights bill. If enacted, it will not restore an adult adoptee’s right to an original birth certificate. -

I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings. I employ the ! ii aesthetic principles of musical theater to consider the genre’s politics, which can cut against the grain of dominant ideology to establish identities and communities in difference. The musical, a bastion of mainstream theatrical culture, supports a fan culture of outsiders who dream themselves into being in the liminal timespaces of song and dance. -

The plow was purchased about 1897 by Adam Meisinger from Louis A. Reiche, who had a store on south Main Street at Jackson Avenue in Naperville. It was restored in 1979 by Derryl Meisinger, son of Earl and Marge Meisinger and great-grandson of Adam Meisinger -2- 1. • • -^i Preface Naperville has a rich heritage pertaining to the farmers in the area, past and present. We commemorate those hardy men and women, who worked so hard to bring Naperville from a prairie wilderness to a thriving city. This collection of 150 Family Histories and 70 photographs are but a sampling of the farm families who made contributions to the "Farmers' monument" on the Quarry Riverwalk. These histories date from the early 1800's to the present, as some families are still actively engaged in tilling the soil.
