The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 film that was adapted from a musical play of the same name. It is a cult phenomenon that has been preserved in the library of congress due to its overwhelming success. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is both a horror movie and a musical. It also uses elements of comedy and sci-fi but we’ll focus on the main aspects: horror and musical. The Rocky Horror Picture Show tells the story of an engaged couple, Brad and Janet, who stumble upon a castle belonging to the eccentric Dr. Frank N. Furter who will give them a night they’ll never forget. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of the best-known musicals of all time thanks to the success of the film. The same actors who were cast in the stage production that took place two years earlier were also cast in the film. Homages have been made to both musical and film over the years including the songs being featured on the hit TV series Glee . The best-known song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show is “Time Warp” and it is considered to be the film’s theme. (See link 1.) Contrary to popular belief, songs are not randomly placed throughout musicals. There are key moments when it is appropriate, and in some cases even expected, for characters to break into song. These moments are when a character transitions in conversation, changes their goals, or there is a shift in power between characters; when a character has a moment of realization or gains a new level of understanding; and when a character make a decision that will impact the story. (See link 2.) An example of a character singing at a time when there is a change in power is “Touch-a Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me” (See link 3.) In the song Janet expresses her feelings of betrayal for Brad cheating on her and her frustration that no one will be intimate with her. She then becomes intimate with Rocky giving into pure lust. This is also an element of horror but we’ll get to that later. An example of a character singing when they have a revelation is “Floor Show”(See link 4). All the characters sing about how they’ve given into lust and don’t (or are unwilling to) see the error of their ways. An example of a character singing when they make a decision that will impact the story is “Dammit Janet”(See links 5* and 5.5*). After much hesitation, Brad proclaims his love for Janet and they get engaged. Because of this event they travel by car to tell their friend, Dr. Everett Scott and this is when the car brakes down just outside Dr. Frank N. Furter’s castle. Had Brad kept his feelings inside the entire adventure never would have happened. Lust plays a huge part in almost every musical number in the film and it just so happens that lust is the catalyst for the horror aspect of the film. With a name like The Rocky Horror Picture Show you’d expect a certain amount of, well, horror. The Rocky Horror Picture Show demonstrates multiple aspects from different sub-genres of horror, specifically classic horror, monster horror, psycho-horror, and supernatural horror. The film, being made in 1975, lacks what we today define as horror films: suspense, lots of scares, multiple attacks, blood and gore, and antagonists with no backstory or motivation behind their actions. However, The Rocky Horror Picture Show demonstrates elements of classic horror, psycho horror, monster horror, and supernatural horror. Classical horror stories, such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho , always deal with the conflict in a confined space, or “haunted house”. In the case of The Rocky Horror Picture Show the haunted house is a very classic example, a haunted castle. From the moment Brad and Janet step foot inside, the audience knows they should leave. The entry way is decorated with dark wooden furniture, stuffed animal heads, and hunting trophies. This creates a classic haunted house look. One of the main elements of psycho-horror is the question “What is human and what is inhuman?” The answer is something that tries to act human or tries to enter the human community. Rocky is the perfect example of that. Despite appearing human, having human characteristics, and being treated like a human; when Dr. Frank N. Furter is killed, Rocky takes his body and attempts to climb the radio antenna King Kong style before he is killed. Monster horror deals with evolution vs. devolution. Aside from Rocky’s awakening being a direct homage to Frankenstein’s Monster the entire movie deals with characters in the most basic state of mind, giving in to lust. Brad and Janet both very quickly forget about their engagement and have intercourse with many of the castles tenants. Supernatural horror deals with things we don’t, and probably never will understand. The final twist in the story is that the haunted castle is actually a space ship and that everyone in the castle (apart from Brad, Janet, and Dr. Everett Scott) is an alien. Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott manage to get out of the castle before it takes off into the sky, leaving them all very confused. The film also has a strong cult following, even today, that has resulted in many theaters to stop showing the movie. Some rituals of this cult include marking those who have never seen the movie with a V for “virgin” in red lipstick on their forehead. These individuals are then mocked and made to do dangerous and degrading inauguration stunts. The Rocky Horror Picture Show successfully marries musical and horror together. The phenomenon of success it has achieved has never been matched. The Rocky Horror Picture Show still enjoys midnight screenings around the world to this day, making it the longest running theatrical release in history and, of course, one of the most successful movies of all time. On October 21, 2016, UNCW's Association for Campus Entertainment (otherwise known as ACE) held their annual, ever popular event Rocky Horror Picture Show. The event consisted of various audience members participating in contests, lines said that aren't in the movie, and activities during the event. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) is a movie starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Meatloaf (among others). The two main characters Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) get a flat tire while on a trip and look to Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) for help, not knowing the adventure that awaits them. The movie started off as a musical and, though it flopped when it first came out, quickly gained a large following and became a cult classic. Every year, ACE plans and hosts the movie, complete with a Shadowcast that acts out the movie in front of the screen and says lines that mirror, but aren't quite the same, the actual script. An ever popular event, ACE's production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show consistently sells out. On the day of the event, people line up as early as 4 p.m. and stay in line until they are allowed into the theater at 11 p.m. The first 150 people got prop bags filled with items that would be used during the show. While in line, various students are often in costume, dressing up in corsets, as characters from the movie, and in general clothing. Another organization usually co-sponsors the event, and this year's co-sponsor was Vision's Film Festival, who advertised their submissions were open for films. After that and other announcements made by the ACE Films co-chair(s), the cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show would walk in. As the cast members sit and get comfortable in their seats, the coordinators of the event (this year there were three) screamed announcements at the audience and ran a slideshow on the rules of the shadowcast. The rules consisted of throwing out or using the props they were given (one glove, a party hat, a noisemaker, newspaper, toilet tissue, a glowstick, and a card), what not to use--no food was allowed in the theater and also could not be thrown--and the introduction of the "Virgin Dance." But before the Virgin Dance, there were contests.

I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.
