All others (1916-1920) have various forms of “etched” black centers. All explanatory talks are by Harry E. Humphrey unless specifically identified as John Charles Thomas (who recorded a few in 1914, just as his singing career was developing). Edison discs pick up marks and rubs easily, so I’m pleased to be offering so many choice copies. There should be no sonic difference between records graded “ just about 1-2” and those “2”, as well as any with “superficial” connected to the grading. The same applies to all the other recordings listed in this catalogue. As Edison often issued multiple takes (the letters following the matrix numbers indicate the take), collectors may find comparisons of these interesting. Sometimes the different takes were made during the same session, but other times there could be months or even years separating them. Likewise the takes can be remarkably similar or noticeably different. It’s often possible to observe physically, in comparing the grooving of multiple takes, that one might be shorter or longer than another. Vocal EDISON DIAMOND-DISCS AÏNO ACKTÉ [s]. Ackté recorded about 29 se- lections for Edison, yet only one was issued, this in two takes (both listed below). This lasted in the catalogue for only a very short time. 3464. SS 83014 [1302-A/2493-A]. OTELLO: Piangea cantando (Verdi) / EXPLANATORY TALK. This take is slightly longer than the following. Half- moon rim crk. side one (not into grooves). 2. $250.00. 3465. SS 83014 [1302-B/2493-A]. OTELLO: Piangea cantando (Verdi) /EXP. TALK. A slight “bang” is audible during the final harp chords preceding Ackté’s high A sharp near the end. I think it’s the harpist foot that slid off a pedal. In both takes Ackté failed to back up far enough so the A sharp just mentioned tends to blast . Half-moon rim crks. not into grooves. 2. $250.00. GIUSEPPE ANSELMI [t] 3491. SS 83008 [1372-A/2556-A]. PAGLIACCI: Vesti la giubba (Leoncavallo) / EXP. TALK. Side one just about 1-2. See also: LUCREZIA BORI [s] A newspaper article by Emilie Frances Bauer in the Feb. 17, 1913 N.J. Mail went into detail as to why Bonci’s voice “was in an unusually excellent condition” at a N.Y. Aeolian Hall concert the previous Saturday evening. She reported: “Mr. Bonci has been making records for Thomas Edison’s latest instrument. The great inventor had asked Mr. Bonci to prepare himself by perfect quiet [except for a] certain amount of rehearsing so that he might secure records absolutely pure and perfect of tone. For this reason his voice is in the most marvelous condition in which it has ever been heard. Never has Bonci shown such power, color and mastery of the the smallest detail. His mere tone production was the most glorious example of singing that New York has ever heard.” Hmm! 3483. SS 83006 [2277-A/2557-B]. ELISIR D’AMORE: Una furtiva lagrima (Donizetti) / EXP. TALK. VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just the slightest marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the time of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually with a translation of the text or similarly related comments. BESSIE ABOTT [s]. Riverdale, NY, 1878-New York, 1919. Following the death of her father which left her family penniless, Bessie and her sister Jessie (born Pickens) formed a vaudeville sister vocal act, accompanying themselves on banjo and guitar. Upon the recommendation of Jean de Reszke, who heard them by chance, Bessie began operatic training with Frida Ashforth. She subsequently studied with de Reszke him- self and appeared with him at the Paris Opéra, making her debut as Gounod’s Juliette.

THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. Several things may be noted: 1) Many of the sales figures seem surprisingly small and many of the records must be classed as rarities; 2) Deletion was not always because of poor sales-mold damage also played a part; 3) Records were retained even with extremely disappointing sales. Without a knowledge of the reason for discontinuance we cannot assume anything concerning records that had already been discontinued.

EDVARD GRIEG Recognizing the Importance of the Nationalist Composer on the International Stage IPA Transliteration of Three Song Cycles D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Caroline Patricia Bergan, M.M., A.D. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2020 D.M.A. Document Committee Dr. Scott McCoy, Advisor Dr. Youkyung Bae Prof. Edward Bak Prof. Loretta Robinson Copyright by Caroline Patricia Bergan 2020 Abstract In North American colleges, universities, and conservatories it is not uncommon to find the main languages required of music students to be French, Italian, German, and English. Beyond the scope of these four most common languages, Russian, Spanish, and Czech are sung by more advanced or native singers of the languages; however, many other languages seem to be ignored in academia in both solo performance as well as in choral settings. It is a disservice to limit the scope of languages and repertoire when there exists a plethora of rarely performed compositions; moreover, it is not reasonable for these institutions to limit student's learning because of this “tradition.” Among the overlooked are the Scandinavian languages. This document will specifically address the repertoire of the most renowned Norwegian composer of the nineteenth century, Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). There exist but two published works that provide a singer with the resources to learn the pronunciation of curated Grieg selections. Neither of these resources was written by native Norwegian speakers; therefore, utilizing my linguistic skills as a native speaker and singer I intend this document to be a contribution toward the goal of providing near-native, accurate International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transliterations of three song cycles representing Grieg's early, middle, and late writing.
