In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. This book is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core at doi.org/10.1017/9781108614306. derek b. scott is Professor of Critical Musicology at the University of Leeds. -

A large body of published research exists regarding the physiology of breathing, the acoustics of singing, and solutions for specific vocal faults. There is similarly a growing body of research into the system of voice classification and repertoire assignment. This paper shall reexamine this research in light of baritenor voices. After establishing the general parameters of healthy vocal technique through appoggio, the various tenor, baritone, and bass Fächer will be studied to establish norms of vocal criteria such as range, timbre, tessitura, and registration for each Fach. The study of these Fächer includes examinations of the historical singers for whom the repertoire was created and how those roles are cast by opera companies in modern times. The specific examination of baritenors follows the same format by examining current and -
ARSC Journal
THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. Several things may be noted: 1) Many of the sales figures seem surprisingly small and many of the records must be classed as rarities; 2) Deletion was not always because of poor sales-mold damage also played a part; 3) Records were retained even with extremely disappointing sales. Without a knowledge of the reason for discontinuance we cannot assume anything concerning records that had already been discontinued. -
Allen C. Tanner (1898-1987) MC 2013.3
Archives and Special Collections Dickinson College Carlisle, PA COLLECTION REGISTER Name: Allen C. Tanner (1898-1987) MC 2013.3 Material: Papers (1890-1986) Volume: 3.0 linear feet (Document Boxes 1-6, 19 Oversized Folders, 134 Photograph Folders, 10 Books) Donation: Gift of Liz Hamill Howard (Class of 1982), 2009 Usage: These materials have been donated without restrictions on usage. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Allen C. Tanner was born on September 29, 1898 to Allen Caldwell Tanner and Mabel Waters Pace Tanner of Mount Vernon, Illinois. He came from a musically talented family, including siblings Florence, Wynona, Allene, and Earl. At the age of eight, he began training in music with an aunt who played the piano and with his cousin Mabel Pavey, who was also a skilled musician. Tanner showed promise as a pianist at an early age, and at fifteen he went to Chicago to further his musical education. He was awarded a scholarship to study with Victor Heinze and soon began performing publicly. Margaret Anderson, founder of the Little Review, heard Tanner perform in Chicago and became an admirer of his music and also a friend. Tanner then moved to New York City, where he accompanied vocalists such as Marguerite Namara and was invited to play with Ruano Bogislav (Mrs. Riccardo Martin), Frances Alda, Marguerite D’Alvarez, and Georgette Leblanc. He also performed in musical salons and came into contact with many musical greats of the era, including Myra Hess, Arthur Rubinstein, Paul Kochanski, and Karol Szymanowski. In the early 1920s, he spent a summer in Bernardsville, NJ where he shared a house with Margaret Anderson, Georgette Leblanc, and George Antheil. -
Nini, Bloodshed, and La Marescialla D'ancre
28 Nini, bloodshed, and La marescialla d’Ancre Alexander Weatherson (This article originally appeared in Donizetti Society Newsletter 88 (February 2003)) An odd advocate of so much operatic blood and tears, the mild Alessandro Nini was born in the calm of Fano on 1 November 1805, an extraordinary centre section of his musical life was to be given to the stage, the rest of it to the church. It would not be too disrespectful to describe his life as a kind of sandwich - between two pastoral layers was a filling consisting of some of the most bloodthirsty operas ever conceived. Maybe the excesses of one encouraged the seclusion of the other? He began his strange career with diffidence - drawn to religion his first steps were tentative, devoted attendance on the local priest then, fascinated by religious music - study with a local maestro, then belated admission to the Liceo Musicale di Bologna (1827) while holding appointments as Maestro di Cappella at churches in Montenovo and Ancona; this stint capped, somewhat surprisingly - between 1830 and 1837 - by a spell in St. Petersburg teaching singing. Only on his return to Italy in his early thirties did he begin composing in earnest. Was it Russia that introduced him to violence? His first operatic project - a student affair - had been innocuous enough, Clato, written at Bologna with an milk-and-water plot based on Ossian (some fragments remain), all the rest of his operas appeared between 1837 and 1847, with one exception. The list is as follows: Ida della Torre (poem by Beltrame) Venice 1837; La marescialla d’Ancre (Prati) Padua 1839; Christina di Svezia (Cammarano/Sacchero) Genova 1840; Margarita di Yorck [sic] (Sacchero) Venice 1841; Odalisa (Sacchero) Milano 1842; Virginia (Bancalari) Genova 1843, and Il corsaro (Sacchero) Torino 1847.
