Junior Spring 2017 Character Education Field Trip Packing List:

NOTE: all students & faculty must bring their own pillows, sheets, and blankets/comforters. If you have a sleeping bag, you may bring that instead of linens. These items will be packed on the bus the morning you leave (Sunday, 4/23).

Each student will get 3 bags: two to store during travel and one to keep with them on the bus.

• 1. Carry On: whatever they’ll need en route, such as books. • 2. Stored bag: and other items per the packing list below. These bags will be stored in the bag of the buses during transit. Students / adults will not have access until arrival. • 3. Linens/pillows: These will be transported in the bus (see Note above).

Whitewater Rafting Clothes: You will be provided with a for rafting. The wetsuit will keep you warm but the clothes underneath will get wet. Don’t wear cotton under your wetsuit, because cotton will hold cold next to your skin. Here’s what you should bring/wear for rafting:

: either old athletic shoes or with straps (not flip-flops or crocs). • Wool or synthetic . No cotton socks! • Bathing . • T- made of synthetic material. No cotton! • Bring one towel.

Community Service Clothes: Please remember that you are representing both Blue Ridge School and the Southern Appalachia Labor School. Your needs to be modest and safe.

• BRING ENOUGH CLOTHES FOR TWO DAYS. facilities are very limited. Work clothes will get dirty and sweaty and perhaps painted and torn. We recommend you pack inexpensive clothing purchased at yard sales or thrift stores and items you would not mind getting really dirty or trashed. You can outfit yourself nicely for under $10 at Goodwill. • WORK CLOTHES: with long sleeves and long pants must be worn at all times at the work site. DON’T ASK FOR EXCEPTIONS, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE! Old tennis shoes are ideal. are fine, too. (No flip-flops, sandals or open-toed shoes at the worksite.) Clothing should neither be skin-tight nor baggy. • LEISURE CLOTHES: Pack one set of comfortable clothing for hanging out in the center after work hours and for riding home on the bus. • NO VALUABLES or large amounts of cash. Please do not bring any electronic devices to the work site. This includes cell phones, radios, I-pods, etc. You are there to work. These items are not appropriate at a work site. • OTHER ITEMS: o Personal toiletries: (pack liquids in plastic bags) ! /deodorant/ shampoo/toothbrush/ toothpaste/etc. ! towels & washcloths ! showering shoes (flip flops) o Sleeping bag or linens and a pillow o Water bottle o Rain &/or light o o Flashlight
