S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S VIEW FROM T C A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 16TH MARCH 2019 I would like to welcome everybody to our first home game of the season in NCL Division 1. A big thanks to all our sponsors for this season, their contribution is invaluable. All the sponsors are advertised within the programme so I would urge our players, supporters and members to use their services whenever possible. Both teams today are undefeated, each having won one from one! We had a nerve wracking 23 - 22 victory away at Dewsbury Moor, a last minute Niall Murphy drop goal giving us the points and St Pats were victororious at home to Featherstone, 22 – 16. Our visitors today, Wigan St Pats, were formed in 1910 with a youth rugby team and they now run teams at all age groups. They were founder members of the BARLA National League in 1986/87, now the NCL. After many years in the Premier Division, last year saw Pats relegated and I am sure they will be all out his year to get back to the summit. They have supplied some fantastic players for the pro game, far too many to mention in this page but to name just a few: Andy Platt, Chris Joynt, Phil Clarke, Andy Gregory, Shaun Edwards, Mike Gregory, Joe Lydon, Kris Radlinski, Shaun Wane, Mick Cassidy, Sean O’Loughlin, Liam Farrell, Josh Charnley and the Tomkins brothers, what a fantastic team they would make. To celebrate our 130 years anniversary, we will be sporting a “retro” shirt for this season. This can be purchased in our club shop on O’Neill’s web site. Several events are being lined up to celebrate, further details later in the year. “The Stanningley Story 1889 – 1989” is also being updated, additional material has been discovered to add to the original as well as for seasons 1989 to 2019. This should be available for sale in the next month or so. Sad news about the recent passing of Keith Falcon on 28th February. Keith was a coach, committee member and former chairman as well as a decent bloke. His funeral was held last Monday with a fantastic turn out. Former player Mally Slavin has also recently passed away. His funeral is at Rawdon on Friday 26th April, 12.20pm. Condolences to both families. We will once again be running 3 teams at open age level this year. The Alliance are in YML Division 2 and the Academy will have games against 6 or 7 clubs that also run Academies, these games will be arranged on a weekly basis when clubs have player availability. Once again, John Popplewell will be running today’s raffle, please see him for a ticket. Enjoy the game. That happened to me on Saturday night when I checked on the result in the BetFred Super League clash between Catalans Dragons and Salford Red Devils. I’d been covering the Coral Challenge Cup tie between Hunslet and West Bowling (who performed really well, despite the 56-10 scoreline, incidentally) and had been travelling home - to my, desk to deal with other Cup, plus BARLA National Cup and Kingstone Press National Conference League reports – while the match was being screened live on Sky, so I’d no idea about who had won. I’d have fancied the Dragons beforehand, to be honest, although I wouldn’t have been surprised by a Salford victory. But 46-0? Never in a million years would I have anticipated a margin of that magnitude, especially as the Frenchmen had done so well in edging Warrington Wolves the previous week, while the Red Devils had come off very much second best against St Helens. Perhaps those two games were a factor in the scoreline in Perpignan. Mindset is so important in sport, and there were hints in one or two reports I’ve read that the Dragons took victory for granted. On closer inspection, though, there seems to have been little between the sides until close to half-time when Salford, having notched an early try, suddenly began to cut loose. On that basis it seems that the Red Devils may more have grown into the game than given Catalans a shock, although the Dragons will certainly have been stunned in the end. Whenever I see results such as those I’m reminded of a surprising scoreline from yesteryear. One was from way before my time, in the 1953-54 season, when Liverpool City hosted Warrington in a league match. This was in the era of a 30-team single league. City, as usual, were near the bottom of the table, while the Wire would finish the season with three major trophies, lifting the Challenge Cup, the Championship and the Lancashire League. Indeed, if they’d managed to win the Lancashire Cup they’d have joined Hunslet, Huddersfield and Swinton in pulling off the magnificent All Four Cups feat. Liverpool that day, though, were no respecters of reputations. Warrington returned from Knotty Ash humbled by a 5-2 defeat. Keith Macklin, in his superb book `The Rugby League Game’ recounted: “The reaction to the result in Warrington was as humorous as it was predictable. When the football editions of the newspapers appeared on the streets stay-at-home supporters bought a paper, looked twice at the result, then went back to the newsboy and bought another paper, convinced there had been a misprint. “It was a great moment for Rugby League, for nothing is more tedious than the foregone conclusion.” That’s how the scoreline in France, if not the result itself, will always resonate with me.
