  • Tees Valley Giants
5TEES VALLEY GIANTS TEES VALLEY GIANTS A series of five world-class art installations matched only in scale by the ambition of Tees Valley Regeneration in its instigation of the project. Temenos is the first iteration of the five sculptures that will combine as the world’s largest series of public art - the Tees Valley Giants. The epically scaled installations created by Turner Prize winning sculptor Anish Kapoor and pioneering structural designer Cecil Balmond, will soon grace the Tees Valley, with the first of these, Temenos, located at Middlehaven, Middlesbrough. Over the next decade four more structures will be located within each of the other four Tees Valley boroughs: Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington and Redcar and Cleveland. Although each work is individually designed and specific to its location, the structures will be thematically related, visually linking the Tees Valley and highlighting the ambition for social, cultural and economic regeneration of the Tees Valley as a whole. Massive in impact, scale and world status, Tees Valley Giants is symbolic of the aspiration and ongoing commitment of Tees Valley Regeneration to enhance the way in which the Tees Valley is viewed and experienced. TEMENOS Temenos Greek, meaning ‘land cut off and assigned as sanctuary or holy area.’ Temenos is a bold contemporary artwork which also recalls the heritage of Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley. Its construction will call on the traditional twin skills of the region: precision engineering and heavy industry. Standing at a height of nearly 50 metres and spanning almost 120 metres in length, Temenos will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Middlesbrough’s landmark Transporter Bridge.

  • Urban Public Transport Service Co-Creation: Leveraging Passenger’S Knowledge to Enhance Travel Experience
Available online at www.sciencedirect.com ScienceDirect Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences 111 ( 2014 ) 577 – 585 EWGT2013 – 16th Meeting of the EURO Working Group on Transportation Urban public transport service co-creation: leveraging passenger’s knowledge to enhance travel experience António A. Nunesa,*, Teresa Galvãoa, João Falcão e Cunhaa aFaculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Rua Dr. Roberto Frias, 4200-465 Porto, Portugal Abstract Mobile devices are increasingly pervasive and are transforming information distribution paradigms. A rapidly growing segment of urban public transport passengers carry mobile computing devices, permanently and on the move. In a context of thinning financial resources, getting customers involved in the actual delivery of a public transport service as real-time information consumers and providers, may be a powerful method to enhance travel experience while reducing operational costs for the service operator. Each and every customer travelling on a public transport network has unique knowledge about the service operation as it unfolds. This paper proposes a framework that aims to unify public transport passengers’ collective intelligence through crowdsourcing, using their mobile computing devices and dedicated web services. It strives to intensify win-win relationships between public transport passengers and operators. The structured exchange of information is sustained by a validation mechanism for data reliability, and an incentive mechanism to encourage passenger participation. Passengers benefit from rich real-time data tailored to their profiles, to ease their journeys and improve travel experience, in exchange for their own participation providing and validating information. Operators gain access to rich customer generated data, which in an aggregated format may provide a real-time assessment of customer experience and of local performance across the entire network operation.

HER-STORY ON FEMALE POWER AND AUTHORITY IN THE ZAMBEZI VALLEY, MOZAMBIQUE Carmeliza Soares da Costa Rosário University of Bergen [email protected] Donas da Terra. her-story on female power and authority in the Zambezi Valley, Mozambique! ! Abstract The Zambezi Valley, in Mozambique has been considered a sociological construct, more than geographical space. Portuguese colonial rule over this area, enacted initially from Goa, instituted the prazo system which was a system by which Crown land was leased to settlers for a fixed period. To attract more settlers, some prazos were given as dowry to girls who married Portuguese vassals; to be inherited through the female line, for at least three generations. These women became known as the Donas. Indigenous women in the region were also reportedly powerful and had administrative authority. Among the Maravi, the wife of the karonga had jurisdiction over part of the territory. Female chiefs were also reported to have existed. Among the Shona, the wives of the mutapa had their own territory and at times served as ambassadors of the empire. Despite their notoriety, historical texts mention these women marginally or as surrogates to male dominance. This is not a coincidence, but stems from a male perception of female roles. By constructing a text which generally ignores women’s role in history or relegates it to a secondary plane by comparison to their male counterparts, historians may have not made justice to the social, political and economic structures and inner workings of the Zambezi Valley complex, to borrow Mathews (1981) term.

  • The Urban Rail Development Handbook
DEVELOPMENT THE “ The Urban Rail Development Handbook offers both planners and political decision makers a comprehensive view of one of the largest, if not the largest, investment a city can undertake: an urban rail system. The handbook properly recognizes that urban rail is only one part of a hierarchically integrated transport system, and it provides practical guidance on how urban rail projects can be implemented and operated RAIL URBAN THE URBAN RAIL in a multimodal way that maximizes benefits far beyond mobility. The handbook is a must-read for any person involved in the planning and decision making for an urban rail line.” —Arturo Ardila-Gómez, Global Lead, Urban Mobility and Lead Transport Economist, World Bank DEVELOPMENT “ The Urban Rail Development Handbook tackles the social and technical challenges of planning, designing, financing, procuring, constructing, and operating rail projects in urban areas. It is a great complement HANDBOOK to more technical publications on rail technology, infrastructure, and project delivery. This handbook provides practical advice for delivering urban megaprojects, taking account of their social, institutional, and economic context.” —Martha Lawrence, Lead, Railway Community of Practice and Senior Railway Specialist, World Bank HANDBOOK “ Among the many options a city can consider to improve access to opportunities and mobility, urban rail stands out by its potential impact, as well as its high cost. Getting it right is a complex and multifaceted challenge that this handbook addresses beautifully through an in-depth and practical sharing of hard lessons learned in planning, implementing, and operating such urban rail lines, while ensuring their transformational role for urban development.” —Gerald Ollivier, Lead, Transit-Oriented Development Community of Practice, World Bank “ Public transport, as the backbone of mobility in cities, supports more inclusive communities, economic development, higher standards of living and health, and active lifestyles of inhabitants, while improving air quality and liveability.
