Its impetus was the New Europe Prize for Higher Education and Research, awarded in 1993 to Professor Pleşu by a group of six institutes for advanced study (the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, the National Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences, Wassenaar, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences, Uppsala, and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin). Since 1994, the NEC community of fellows and alumni has enlarged to over 700 members. In 1998 New Europe College was awarded the prestigious Hannah Arendt Prize for its achievements in setting new standards in research and higher education. New Europe College is officially recognized by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research as an institutional structure for postgraduate studies in the humanities and social sciences, at the level of advanced studies. Focused primarily on individual research at an advanced level, NEC offers to young Romanian scholars and academics in the fields of humanities and social sciences, and to the foreign scholars invited as fellows appropriate working conditions, and provides an institutional framework with strong international links, acting as a stimulating environment for interdisciplinary 7 N.E.C. Yearbook Europe next to Europe Program 2013-2014; 2014-2015 dialogue and critical debates. The academic programs NEC coordinates, and the events it organizes aim at strengthening research in the humanities and social sciences and at promoting contacts between Romanian scholars and their peers worldwide. Academic programs currently organized and coordinated by NEC: • NEC Fellowships (since 1994) Each year, up to ten NEC Fellowships open both to Romanian and international outstanding young scholars in the humanities and social sciences are publicly announced. The Fellows are chosen by the NEC international Academic Advisory Board for the duration of one academic year, or one term. They gather for weekly seminars to discuss the progress of their research, and participate in all the scientific events organized by NEC. The Fellows receive a monthly stipend, and are given the opportunity of a research trip abroad, at a university or research institute of their choice. At the end of their stay, the Fellows submit papers representing the results of their research, to be published in the New Europe College Yearbooks. • Ştefan Odobleja Fellowships (since October 2008) The Fellowships given in this program are supported by the National Council of Scientific Research, and are meant to complement and enlarge the core fellowship program. The definition of these fellowships, targeting young Romanian researchers, is identical with those in the NEC Program, in which the Odobleja Fellowships are integrated. • The Pontica Magna Fellowship Program (since October 2015) This Fellowship Program, supported by the VolkswagenStiftung (Germany), invites young researchers, media professionals, writers and artists from the countries around the Black Sea, but also beyond it (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine), for a stay of one or two terms at the New Europe College, during which they have the opportunity to work on projects of their choice. The program welcomes a wide variety of disciplines in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Besides hosting a number of Fellows, 8 NEW EUROPE COLLEGE the College organizes within this program workshops and symposia on topics relevant to the history, present, and prospects of this region. This program is therefore strongly linked to the former Black Sea Link Fellowships. • The Pontica Magna Returning Fellows Program (since March 2016) In the framework of its Pontica Magna Program, New Europe College offers alumni of the Black Sea Link and Pontica Magna Fellowship Programs the opportunity to apply for a research stay of one or two months in Bucharest. The stay should enable successful applicants to refresh their research experience at NEC, to reconnect with former contacts, and to establish new connections with current Fellows. The Pontica Magna Returning Fellows Program targets young researchers, media professionals, writers and artists from the countries around the Black Sea: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. • The Gerda Henkel Fellowship Program (since March 2017) This Fellowship Program, developed with the support of Gerda Henkel Stiftung (Germany), invites young researchers and academics working in the fields of humanities and social sciences (in particular archaeology, art history, historical Islamic studies, history, history of law, history of science, prehistory and early history) from Afghanistan, Belarus, China (only Tibet and Xinjiang Autonomous Regions), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, for a stay of one or two terms at the New Europe College, during which they will have the opportunity to work on projects of their choice. • How to Teach Europe Fellowship Program (since April 2017) This Program, supported by the Robert Bosch Foundation and a Private Foundation from Germany, introduces a new and innovative Fellowship module at the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS), Sofia, and the New Europe College (NEC), Bucharest. Beyond the promotion of outstanding individual researchers, the Program focuses on the intersection of fundamental research and higher education. The joint initiative seeks to identify and bring together bright and motivated young and established university professors from South-eastern Europe to dedicate themselves for a certain amount of time to research work 9 N.E.C. Yearbook Europe next to Europe Program 2013-2014; 2014-2015 oriented toward a specific goal: to lend the state-of-the-art theories and methodologies in the humanities and social sciences a pan-European and/or global dimension and to apply these findings in higher education and the transmission of knowledge to wider audiences. To that end, I will examine civil society invigoration by assessing the effect of interest organisations on policy-making at the governmental level, and the internal democracy of civil society organisations. The key claim is that despite previously diverging communist structures in Hungary, Poland and Romania, there is a convergence among these three countries in the aftermath of their transition to democracy as related to the invigoration of civil society. This claim rests on two empirical observations and one theoretical argument: (1) elitism is widely embedded in political and civil spheres; (2) patron-client forms of relationship between the state and the civil society organisations weaken the institutionalisation of policy-making. As a result, there is a gap between the general and specific aspects of institutionalisation of democracy at the levels of both the political system and civil society. The theoretical argument is that the country-specific historical legacies from the communist period have only a secondary impact on the invigoration of civil society in the period of democratic consolidation.

National Symposium On The Aegean Islands, 2-3 July 2004, Gökçeada - Çanakkale OPENING SPEECH Ali KURUMAHMUT Prime Ministry of Navigation Counsellorship Marine Transportation General Manager The Aegean Sea lies between the Turkish and the Greek main lands, as well as between the Morea peninsular and the southwestern edges of the Anatolian coasts, with the extension of the islands of Çuha, Küçük Çuha, Girit, Kaşot, Kerpe and Rodos that constitute its outer natural boundaries. In terms of the geographical structure, the Aegean, a semi-closed sea, has geological and geo-morphological characteristics peculiar to itself: it has about 1800 islands, islets and rocks of various sorts, as well as a number of geographical formations, scattered al over the Sea. There is little wonder that all these characteristics make the Aegean Sea a special one. The Aegean dispute between Greece and Turkey has been complicated for a number of reasons: for instance, there are many islands in the Aegean that Turkey ceded to Greece through international treaties. And these islands lying in the natural extension of the Turkish mainland surround Anatolia from north to the south. But Athens makes claims of sovereignty over many islands, islets, and rocks though Ankara never ceded any of them to Greece officially. The most obvious and famous case would be the Kardak rocks crisis that erupted between Turkey and Greece at the beginning of 1996. These complications make the Aegean a sea that is of special importance among the seas of the world. It is possible to divide the Aegean Islands into five categories in terms of their geographical locations, geological and geo-morphological characteristics, the historical perspectives of the sovereign powers to which they belonged, the manner in which the sovereignty over them was determined through international treaties, as well as their importance for geo-political and strategic purposes.

    World War I battlecruiser wreck discovered near the Falkland Islands By James Rogers Published December 05, 2019 Fox News The SMS Scharnhorst, the flagship of Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee’s East Asia Squadron, was found in the South Atlantic after a five-year search. The discovery was made 98 nautical miles southeast of the Falkland Islands capital Port Stanley at a depth of 1610 meters (5,282 feet), according to the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The Scharnhorst was sunk by the Royal Navy during the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December 1914. “This discovery is a major breakthrough in the quest to locate all of the ships that comprised the German squadron lost during the battle,” it said in a statement. “The search began on the centenary of the Battle in December 2014 but was initially unsuccessful.” However, the wreck was eventually located in an extensive search operation that harnessed four undersea drones. The wreck was discovered after a five-year search. (Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust) The moment of discovery was “extraordinary,” according to Search Leader Mensun Bound. “We are often chasing shadows on the seabed, but when the Scharnhorst first appeared in the data flow, there was no doubt that this was one of the German fleet,” he said, in the statement. “You could even see the impact crater. We sent down an ROV to explore and almost straight away we were into a debris field that said ‘battle.’ Suddenly she just came out of the gloom with great guns poking in every direction.” The shipwreck was not touched during the search operation and the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust wants the site to be formally protected by law.

    All Guns Blazing! Newsletter of the Naval Wargames Society No. 241 – NOVEMBER 2014 Poppies have been added each day to the moat of The Tower of London from 1st August to Remembrance Day. These photographs were taken in September. 1 Albert Willis, a Chelsea Pensioner, Beefeater Paul Cunliffe, and Captain Joe Robinson, an officer in the Grenadier Guards, paid their respects to the fallen of the First World War at the extraordinary artwork. The artwork, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, was created to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War. It will eventually include 888,246 ceramic poppies to represent all British or colonial military fatalities of the conflict. It is being created in the moat at the Tower of London and some proceeds from the sale of poppies will go to charity. Dating back to the 17th Century, the Chelsea Pensioners - famous for their red tunic - are members of the retirement and nursing home for former members of the British Army at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, south west London. Beefeaters – or Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, to give them their correct title – are former Army personnel who are the ceremonial guardians of the fortress-turned-tourist attraction. The Grenadier Guards, which date back to 1656, is the most senior regiment of the British infantry. It has a proud history fighting in warzones and guarding the Royal Palaces. Taken from the viewing floor at the top of The Shard, this photo (with maximum zoom) gives a Stuka pilot’s view of HMS BELFAST.

    ORIENT EXPRESS 1 OF 10 Prelude Chemins de fer Orientaux 1867-1883 PRELUDE 2 OF 20 Prelude 1867-1883 The genesis of the Orient Express — a direct luxury train service between Paris and Constantinople — cannot be attributed to a single person or organization. Several historical developments coincided. After a train trip through Europe, Sultan Abdülaziz decided that Constantinople should be linked to the West by rail. This plan was carried out by Baron Maurice de Hirsch and his Chemins de fer Orientaux. Meanwhile in the US, George Pullman developed the luxury sleeper car that enabled overnight train travel. The Belgian Georges Nagelmackers introduced this concept in Europe. Requirements Still, not all the requirements had been fulfilled. A consultative body was needed to make the highly fragmented European railway companies work together. The first International Timetable Conference took place in 1872, the same year that Nagelmackers introduced his first Wagons-Lits and the first train entered Constantinople. But it would take over 10 years before the Orient Express could be launched. PRELUDE 3 VAN 20 Constantinople and the Bosporus 1862 A journey to Constantinople over the Mediterranean or via the Danube and Black Sea took at least one week. PRELUDE 4 OF 20 The Sultan's tour 1867 In 1867 Abdülaziz was the first Ottoman sultan to travel through Europe. He visited the Paris World Exhibition, was received with ceremony in London and visited Brussels, Berlin and Vienna on his way. He mostly traveled in his own imperial railway carriage. For centuries, the Ottoman Empire had been a closed bastion. From 1840 onwards sultan Abdülmecid carried through reforms.
