ORIENT EXPRESS 1 OF 10 Prelude Chemins de fer Orientaux 1867-1883 PRELUDE 2 OF 20 Prelude 1867-1883 The genesis of the Orient Express — a direct luxury train service between Paris and Constantinople — cannot be attributed to a single person or organization. Several historical developments coincided. After a train trip through Europe, Sultan Abdülaziz decided that Constantinople should be linked to the West by rail. This plan was carried out by Baron Maurice de Hirsch and his Chemins de fer Orientaux. Meanwhile in the US, George Pullman developed the luxury sleeper car that enabled overnight train travel. The Belgian Georges Nagelmackers introduced this concept in Europe. Requirements Still, not all the requirements had been fulfilled. A consultative body was needed to make the highly fragmented European railway companies work together. The first International Timetable Conference took place in 1872, the same year that Nagelmackers introduced his first Wagons-Lits and the first train entered Constantinople. But it would take over 10 years before the Orient Express could be launched. PRELUDE 3 VAN 20 Constantinople and the Bosporus 1862 A journey to Constantinople over the Mediterranean or via the Danube and Black Sea took at least one week. PRELUDE 4 OF 20 The Sultan's tour 1867 In 1867 Abdülaziz was the first Ottoman sultan to travel through Europe. He visited the Paris World Exhibition, was received with ceremony in London and visited Brussels, Berlin and Vienna on his way. He mostly traveled in his own imperial railway carriage. For centuries, the Ottoman Empire had been a closed bastion. From 1840 onwards sultan Abdülmecid carried through reforms. -

52 A - Michel Pacha Marius Michel est né en 1819, le 16 juillet à Saint-Nazaire (qui prend le nom de Sanary en 1890). 11 est mort le 6 janvier 1907 à Tamaris, et inhumé dans sa ville natale. Son tombeau s'élève dans l'ancien cimetière de Sanary. Marius Michel, capitaine au long cours qui devient Michel Pacha; sa vie et son œuvre sont liées à la mer, à la circulation des hommes et des idées. Les océans sont des espaces d'échange et loin de séparer les peuples les rapprochent. En cela, le XIXème siècle est riche en découvertes de l'ailleurs. Le lointain, l'Orient, le Levant deviennent un monde accessible. Certes, ces explorations s'inscrivent dans un siècle où les intérêts politiques et }.!esprit de conquête sont prioritaires mais la porte est ouverte et le passage reste libre. L'expédition d'Egypte est un acte militaire mais nous connaissons ses répercussions archéologiques, scientifiques, historiques ... L'Orient des artistes est la nouvelle antiquité, celle d'un Delacroix parti au Maroc en mission diplomatique avec le Comte de Mornay. En 1869, le Canal de Suez ouvre grand la voie. Infatigable entrepreneur, Michel Pacha est un lien, une échelle entre deux rives, entre deux civilisations. Dans cette période d'étroites relations entre 1' Orient et l'Occident, où les questions économiques et financières prennent le pas, 1' expér;ience de l'ailleurs n •en, demeure pas moins sources et moyens de création. Les réalisations de Michel Pacha à Constantinople et sur les côtes de Turquie le ramènent à ses origines provençales pour poursuivre sa mission de "bâtisseur" des rivages. -

The work of over 165 photographers is represented in the collection. The collection is supported by a small group of pamphlets and offprints regarding photography in the Ottoman Empire and by a small assemblage of photographic ephemera. -

The Role of the European Powers in West-Middle East Relations Methodological foreword The study of the transportation network in relation to historical space is the subject of transport geography,1 as well as historical geographical space, a branch which examines human geography, and, in particular, the sub-branch of historical human geography, or historical geography.2 Thus, we have established the scientific framework of this work, which is directly connected with the related branch of economic history and social anthropology.3 The arrangement of the railway network in the late Ottoman Empire is examined in relation to society, the economy, though, mainly the ge- opolitical situation in the southern Balkans and Asia Minor at the end of the 19th century. Therefore, knowledge of the historical dimension (historical-geographical framework) is crucial.
