Wreck of SMS Scharnhorst Fund World War I battlecruiser wreck discovered near the Falkland Islands By James Rogers Published December 05, 2019 Fox News The SMS Scharnhorst, the flagship of Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee’s East Asia Squadron, was found in the South Atlantic after a five-year search. The discovery was made 98 nautical miles southeast of the Falkland Islands capital Port Stanley at a depth of 1610 meters (5,282 feet), according to the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The Scharnhorst was sunk by the Royal Navy during the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December 1914. “This discovery is a major breakthrough in the quest to locate all of the ships that comprised the German squadron lost during the battle,” it said in a statement. “The search began on the centenary of the Battle in December 2014 but was initially unsuccessful.” However, the wreck was eventually located in an extensive search operation that harnessed four undersea drones. The wreck was discovered after a five-year search. (Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust) The moment of discovery was “extraordinary,” according to Search Leader Mensun Bound. “We are often chasing shadows on the seabed, but when the Scharnhorst first appeared in the data flow, there was no doubt that this was one of the German fleet,” he said, in the statement. “You could even see the impact crater. We sent down an ROV to explore and almost straight away we were into a debris field that said ‘battle.’ Suddenly she just came out of the gloom with great guns poking in every direction.” The shipwreck was not touched during the search operation and the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust wants the site to be formally protected by law. The wreck of a U.S. World War II destroyer, believed to be the USS Johnston, was found resting at a depth of 20,406 feet by experts on the Research Vessel Petrel. .

These photographs were taken in September. 1 Albert Willis, a Chelsea Pensioner, Beefeater Paul Cunliffe, and Captain Joe Robinson, an officer in the Grenadier Guards, paid their respects to the fallen of the First World War at the extraordinary artwork. The artwork, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, was created to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War. It will eventually include 888,246 ceramic poppies to represent all British or colonial military fatalities of the conflict. It is being created in the moat at the Tower of London and some proceeds from the sale of poppies will go to charity. Dating back to the 17th Century, the Chelsea Pensioners - famous for their red tunic - are members of the retirement and nursing home for former members of the British Army at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, south west London. Beefeaters – or Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, to give them their correct title – are former Army personnel who are the ceremonial guardians of the fortress-turned-tourist attraction. The Grenadier Guards, which date back to 1656, is the most senior regiment of the British infantry. It has a proud history fighting in warzones and guarding the Royal Palaces. (commons.wikimedia.org) Operation “Weserübung”, the German strategic coup against Norway and Denmark on 9 April 1940 has been seen as inspired by the writings of Wolfgang Wegener during and after World War I, as he recommended the expansion of his navy’s narrow base of operation by gaining access to North Sea bases in the Nordic States. The idea of a bright officer from the service periphery inspiring strategic doctrine by bypassing the correct formal channels is, however, fundamentally naïve. It ignores the automatic negative reaction of senior officers and colleagues in any military bureaucracy to somebody that is seen acting in a disloyal and self‐ promoting way. In a peace‐time military critical widely circulated writings of a young or midcareer officer are most likely to be disregarded as signs of arrogance, immaturity or lack of access to the “full picture” (including the political realities in the capital). Later in the critic’s life they might be ignored as driven by career frustrations. In war‐time implicit criticism of the service leadership is intolerable and dangerous. A service leadership may encourage and reward internal elite debate to keep it flexible and identify talent, however neither Tirpitz’ war‐time Kaiserliche Marine nor Raeder´s peace‐time Reichmarine can be considered particularly tolerant of challenges to the dogmas of the service’s leaders.

The Society is grateful to Lieutenant Commander Woods for making it available to the Naval Historical Society of Australia. Lieutenant Commander Woods joined the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1974, subsequently serving in the Royal Navy, the British Army and the RAN as an Education Officer, teaching naval and military history to junior officers. From 2003-2010 he ran the Strategic Studies Course and Naval History induction at the RAN College before joining the staff of the Australian Command and Staff College. He was the Military Support Officer to the Defence Community Organisation in Canberra, worked on the RAN's International Fleet Review in 2013, was the Staff Officer Centenary of Anzac (Navy) and Chief of Navy's Research Officer.     CALL THE HANDS OCCASIONAL PAPER 46 Issue No. 27 February 2019 Lieutenant Kenneth Robert Hudspeth, Distinguished Service Cross and 2 Bars, RANVR, WWII Lieutenant Kenneth Robert Hudspeth, RANVR was one of many Royal Australian Naval personnel whose service in Royal Navy units during the darkest days of World War 2 has gone largely unnoticed in Australia. This story of the self-reliant and courageous LEUT Hudspeth who completed several hazardous missions in the then SECRET, X-Craft (midget submarine) earned him the Distinguished Service Cross and two Bars. Thanks to a research query about Hudspeth received by the Society, the story of his remarkable war service can be told. This story was researched and compiled by Dennis J. Weatherall JP TM AFAITT(L) LSM an active volunteer of the Society. Dennis is a qualified Australian Military Historian and accredited Member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides. Early Life Kenneth Hudspeth was born in Echuca, Victoria on the Murray River on 31 March 1918. His Father Robert was born in 1891 in Carlton, and mother Ada (nee Sim) in 1894 in Box Hill, Victoria. There were two other brothers born into the Hudspeth family, Bruce in 1919 and Donald 1921 in Hobart, Tasmania. Robert Senior started work at 14 years of age and studied at night school to become a teacher. He went on to become the first Principal of Hobart Technical College having established the school, recruited and trained staff in the specific trades required. Kenneth Robert Hudspeth, was encouraged by his father to be aware of the bushland, and became a keen bushwalker in Tasmania’s south-west region.

After 1871, Germany's trade and industry increased vigorously, challenging and, in some areas, even exceeding that of Great Britain, until then the premier industrial nation of Europe. A many-sided rivalry developed between Germany and Britain, intensifying when the sometimes-bellicose Wilhelm II assumed power and began building a strong, ocean-going navy. Seeking to balance the rise of German power, Britain and France began to draw closer together diplomatically as the 20th century began. Germany, meanwhile, had allowed an implicit alliance with Tsarist Russia to lapse, and faced ongoing French resentment over the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine which Germany had annexed in 1871. The perceived danger of "encirclement" by hostile nations began to loom in the minds of German leaders. These factors together formed some of the tinder which would ignite the outbreak of war in 1914. It is interesting to note, however, that all the ruling families of Europe were related to each other in some form or fashion. This led to many Europeans feeling that it was a family affair that they had been dragged into and forced to endure.
