Account of Purley on Thames Gallantry should never be forgotten The Purley Connection While John Chapman was taking Mrs Eileen Goddard from St Mary’s Avenue to the Royal Berks Hospital on a Volunteer Centre trip, she happened to mention that her husband was one of the crew of X6 – one of the three midget submarines sent to try to cripple the Tirpitz in 1943. He had no idea that we had a Purley connection with an event like this and thought a few more people would like to know about it. A second connection emerged in that John had been in contact with Vernon Coles DSM over the war in the Pacific when he was Chairman of West Berkshire Council. Vernon was born in Tilehurst and was a close friend of Edmund Goddard with whom he had served on X-craft. The Tirpitz The Tirpitz was one of the most powerful battleships ever built. Her role was to attack convoys bringing much needed supplies from America to Britain and Russia. At 41000 tons she outgun- Edmund Goddard [M030508] ned any Royal Navy ship and if allowed to roam the Atlantic she would be a terrible danger to our ships, far more of a menace than any submarine. Churchill christened her ‘The Beast’ and put the country’s best minds to work to see how they could counter the menace. She was commissioned in February 1941, the last and most powerful of the Bismark Class and was sent to Trondheim in Norway in January 1942 to prevent an allied invasion of Norway and to attack the Russian convoys. -

In 1964 the timber pylons and dolphins were demolished with explosives and the steel nets were cut and dropped onto the seabed (Jeffery 1988). -

World War I battlecruiser wreck discovered near the Falkland Islands By James Rogers Published December 05, 2019 Fox News The SMS Scharnhorst, the flagship of Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee’s East Asia Squadron, was found in the South Atlantic after a five-year search. The discovery was made 98 nautical miles southeast of the Falkland Islands capital Port Stanley at a depth of 1610 meters (5,282 feet), according to the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The Scharnhorst was sunk by the Royal Navy during the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December 1914. “This discovery is a major breakthrough in the quest to locate all of the ships that comprised the German squadron lost during the battle,” it said in a statement. “The search began on the centenary of the Battle in December 2014 but was initially unsuccessful.” However, the wreck was eventually located in an extensive search operation that harnessed four undersea drones. The wreck was discovered after a five-year search. (Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust) The moment of discovery was “extraordinary,” according to Search Leader Mensun Bound. “We are often chasing shadows on the seabed, but when the Scharnhorst first appeared in the data flow, there was no doubt that this was one of the German fleet,” he said, in the statement. “You could even see the impact crater. We sent down an ROV to explore and almost straight away we were into a debris field that said ‘battle.’ Suddenly she just came out of the gloom with great guns poking in every direction.” The shipwreck was not touched during the search operation and the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust wants the site to be formally protected by law. -

All Guns Blazing! Newsletter of the Naval Wargames Society No. 241 – NOVEMBER 2014 Poppies have been added each day to the moat of The Tower of London from 1st August to Remembrance Day. These photographs were taken in September. 1 Albert Willis, a Chelsea Pensioner, Beefeater Paul Cunliffe, and Captain Joe Robinson, an officer in the Grenadier Guards, paid their respects to the fallen of the First World War at the extraordinary artwork. The artwork, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, was created to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War. It will eventually include 888,246 ceramic poppies to represent all British or colonial military fatalities of the conflict. It is being created in the moat at the Tower of London and some proceeds from the sale of poppies will go to charity. Dating back to the 17th Century, the Chelsea Pensioners - famous for their red tunic - are members of the retirement and nursing home for former members of the British Army at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, south west London. Beefeaters – or Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, to give them their correct title – are former Army personnel who are the ceremonial guardians of the fortress-turned-tourist attraction. The Grenadier Guards, which date back to 1656, is the most senior regiment of the British infantry. It has a proud history fighting in warzones and guarding the Royal Palaces. Melbourne Rare Book Fair 2019: The Highlights Including Russian Australiana & Avant-Garde Classics BOOKVICA 1 F O R E W O R D Dear all, We are glad to present to you the catalogue for the Melbourne fair - fair we wanted to participate in for a long time. The preface is that the international bookselling career of Bookvica founder, Pavel Chepyzhov, has started in Australia 8 years ago, with the ILAB internship done with the Cornstalk Bookshop and Hordern House. Now, we are coming back to show the work that has been done in these last years. The selection that we bring to Melbourne is as diverse and representative of our work as possible: from the illuminated gems of the 17th century in the shape of special coloured copy of Paterik Pecherskiy (1661) and the 13-meter long Armenian prayer scroll manuscript, to the classical Rodchenko and Lebedev’s works in book avant-garde. The special section is dedicated to what we have called Russian Australiana. Here one can find books that show connection between two countries which existed steadily through the last 200 years, especially if you include the numerous Russian travels in the Pacific and the influence of Russian culture on the Pacific Rim. We are glad to bring to Melbourne the signed copy of the travel account of one of the greatest Russian circumnavigators, Yuri Lisiansky, as well as the Russian translation of the James Cook’s biography by Kippis (1790), to underline the common ground. The Chinese section offers a glimpse into the Russian travel exploration of China, to the imprints of the exiled Russians in China in the 1920s-1930s, while in USSR at the same time the albums and books praising Mao were printed. -
