The objectives of the investigation were to assess the archaeological potential of the property and determine through field survey whether there were archaeological resources in the study area prior to development in accordance with the Planning Act. A residential development project is slated for the property (Map 2). The Stage 1 assessment included a review of updated Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS) archaeological site databases, a review of relevant environmental, historical and archaeological literature, and primary historical research, including historic maps. The western agricultural portion of this property is considered to have archaeological potential based on its sandy well drained soils, its proximity to a prominent historic road, and the depiction of a house on the property on an 1863 map.

Morey Morey Houle Engineering Consultants Ltd, Kemptville, Ont., Canada ABSTRACT: In the past 100 years, 4 retrogressive earthflows, which range in size from 15 to 30 ha and display retrogressive distances of up to 680 m, have occurred along a 20 km reach of the South Nation River, 50 km east of Ottawa, Canada's capital. In addition, numerous scars of earlier landslides of a similar size have been recognized hi the same area. These slides occur in sensitive marine clays of the Champlain Sea basin. Slope instability in this area has been a concern for local residents especially in view of the large landslides that occurred in 1971 and 1993. In both cases, the river was blocked causing extensive flooding. Following the 1971 failure, the site for a proposed bridge for a 4-lane highway was relocated 15 km upstream of the original site. Between 1987 and 1990, a 1700 in long rock berm was constructed to protect 41 homes and in 1991 the population of the village of Lemieux was relocated.

HISTORICAL GLIMPSE OF NORTH DUNDAS TOWNSHIP by Murray A. Inch [email protected] Settlement began along the South Nation River with the first settlers arriving by water, or by overland trails from the St Lawrence River. Settler farmers cut a forced road along the banks of the South Nation River from Spencerville to Armstrong Mills, (Chesterville) to supplement river transport and facilitate the movement of goods and people especially in winter. The river flood plain was wet clay, often peat covered bogs. Consequently many surveyed roads could not be opened so the settlers built numerous “forced” roads along gravel ridges to access homes and markets. Settlement began in Mountain and Winchester Townships about 1800, following surveys of the townships. The number of settlers only became significant after the War of 1812-1815. Early settlers included second generation United Empire Loyalist families from the St. Lawrence Front, such as the Armstrong’s who took up land in the first and second concessions of Mountain, while the Van Camps settled in the 3rd concession near South Mountain and the 5th and 6th concessions the site of Van Camps` Mills. A second group of settlers were individuals such as Benjamin Bigford and George Hummell who purchased their lots from Loyalist grantees. Other groups followed from England, Ireland and Scotland, such as the Hyndman, Monteith and Baldwin families. Lots were cleared for farming and an economy based on resource exploitation developed. Brush and timber not used for homes and farm buildings nor shipped to a mill, were burned, the ash collected and sold for processing into potash.

(LRL) to complete a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) for the land described as West Part Lot 9, Concession 10 in Embrun, Ontario (herein referred to as the “Site”). The Site is set within a residential, institutional and agricultural area of Embrun, Ontario and is primarily developed with agricultural fields. This assessment was conducted to identify potential environmental concerns or liabilities related to the past and present operations conducted on the property and the adjacent lands. The assessment included a review of the history of the Site, contact with relevant regulatory agencies, a limited walk-through Site inspection of the property and interviews with those knowledgeable of the Site. This assessment was conducted in the context of financing. The Site is irregular shaped with an approximate area of 107,500 m2 (26.5 acres). The Site is primarily used as agricultural fields (corn field at the time of the survey) with a portion at the southeastern extent which is vacant and covered by overgrown grasses and shrubs. The Site and general area are generally flat with steep banks along the un-named creek, approximately 3 m in height, located at the southwestern perimeter of the Site.
