Gibbons have scorched stages worldwide. As a friend said, “it’s amazing how just three guys could make that much sound.” Rest in peace, Mr. Hill. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson gets inspired by the music of Renaissance composer William Byrd, and understands The Animals. Wayne Robins reviews Native Sons, the superb new album from Los Lobos.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact Jeffrey Springut (585) 473-4482 [email protected] Photos/Videos/Releases RochesterEvents.com/press Tedeschi Trucks Band 2016 Wheels Of Soul Summer Tour Makes 1st Stop In Rochester Rochester, NY. Rochester Events is thrilled to announce Tedeschi Trucks Band Wheels Of Soul 2016 Summer Tour live at the Highland Bowl Friday, July 8th 2016. Gates Open at 6:00PM. Show starts at 7:00PM. Tedeschi Trucks Band brings their wildly praised Wheels of Soul tour back on the road this summer, adding Los Lobos and North Mississippi Allstars to their list of “rock ‘n soul” collaborators. Rochester’s highly regarded Highland Bowl will host the first stop on the tour. Tedeschi Trucks Band, led by the husband-and-wife team of singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, are fresh off of their January 2016 release of Let Me Get By, their debut album for Fantasy Records. The Associated Press stated “Tedeschi Trucks Band has already released one of the great records of the year,” and following the band’s recent filming of Austin City Limits The Austin Chronicle added “There’s no contemporary match for the Tedeschi Trucks Band in that their third LP manages the nearly impossible combination of growth and improvement where none seems possible or necessary.” Since their inception in 2010, TTB have seen both of their previous albums debut in the Top 15 of the Billboard 200, and won a Grammy for their debut album Revelator, an album hailed by Rolling Stone as a “masterpiece.” They tour over 200 days of the year and have built a dedicated following around the world, one powerful performance at a time.

  • Final LOS LOBOS GATES of GOLD
LOS LOBOS Gates of Gold “We’re a Mexican American band, and no word describes America like immigrant. Most of us are children of immigrants, so it’s perhaps natural that the songs we create celebrate America in this way.” So says Louie Perez, the “poet laureate” and primary wordsmith of Los Lobos, when describing the songs on the band’s new album, Gates of Gold. The stories on Gates of Gold are snapshots of experiences that Perez and his band mates have had, based on where they are emotionally and how they respond to evolving life circumstances. “We live out loud most of the time and share our life this way, but then there are more intrinsic things that happen, and our songs are part of the way we react to them. We sit down and basically tell people what has happened. We certainly didn’t start this project with aspirations to create the musical equivalent to great American literary works.” After celebrating their 40th anniversary with the cleverly titled 2013 live album Disconnected In New York City, the hard working, constantly touring band – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin – leaps headfirst into their fifth decade with an invitation to join them as they open fresh and exciting new Gates of Gold, their first full length studio album since 2010’s Tin Can Trust (a Grammy nominee for Best Americana Album) and second with Savoy/429 Records. The dynamic songwriting, deeply poetic lyrics, thoughtful romantic and spiritual themes and eclectic blend of styles on the 11 track collection has resulted in an American saga in the rich literary tradition of legendary authors John Steinbeck and William Faulkner.

  • Latin American Music Notes© William Little (2008)
Latin American Music Notes© William Little (2008) Introductory Notes Unfortunately very little is known about the music of the inhabitants of the region of the world that has come to be known as Latin America. However, some of that music found its way into the music the Latin European explorers, conquistadors, and colonists brought with them to this—to their—New World. Furthermore, due to isolation, accident, and a strong will to preserve their traditions, people from the pre-Columbian cultures that survived war, disease, oppression, and suppression were able keep some of their music alive throughout the first four centuries of contact. Then, in the twentieth century, ethnomusicologists, cultural progressives, folk humanists, and indigenous musicians themselves were able to begin performing and recording their own music again in public. Clearly, since all cultural practices change over time, much of what seems to be authentic pre-Columbian music is more likely latter-day versions of older traditions; nevertheless, it is fair to say that music scholars in the twenty-first century are able to authenticate some aspects of the pre-Latin musical traditions that prospered in the Western Hemisphere from pole to pole. When the principal Latin European countries—Spain, Portugal, and France—arrived in the Americas, they brought their own fifteenth-century music with them. For four centuries, official music in church, palace, and theater was derived from and remained closely aligned with European musical styles and tastes. As there are several themes that thread their way through the fabric of Latin American humanities, so too are there several distinctive unifying features of Latin American music.

  • Los Lobos, Jazz Cafe, London
Los Lobos, Jazz Cafe, London By Gavin Martin Published: 28 August 2006 Heavy-set and stone-faced they sport shades, goatees and pork-pie hats. Los Lobos look like the Reservoir Dogs of Chicano rock. Thirty-three years since they began, Los Lobos' brief dalliance with mainstream success (their 1987 soundtrack to the Ritchie Valens biopic La Bamba) may be past, but, as tonight proves, their musical engagement is a lifelong affair. On the opening "Hold On" Dave Hidalgo is a tender giant, his sweet cry of soulful resolve pivoting on a determined declaration to "do it all over again" while bass player Conrad Lozano provides a loping swamp groove. Then, swapping his frazzled blues guitar for a set of maracas, Cesar Rosas takes the first of several Spanish-language lead vocals, an intoxicating blend of high kicking cantina fiestas and slow waltzes. All the while the newest member, the excellently named, suitably lethal, drummer Cougar Estrada, maintains an agile and alert pulse. "Chains" initially seems to be a generic bump'n'grind blues but soon explodes into one of the exultant jam-band lift-offs. The title track of the 1990 album "The Neighbourhood" is a reminder that the personal struggles of immigrant, communities have been a long-standing concern. That's the theme binding their current, excellent, The Town And The City album. "Road To Gila Bend" one of many new tracks featured from it, is transcendent, its classic pop chorus as instantly memorable as the shimmering "Kiko And The Lavender Moon". Abandoning a tantalising blast of Van Morrison's "Moondance", Rosas cracks a grin and wryly defers to the venue by introducing a "jazz" song.

  • Los Lobos Liner Notes & Credits
Los Lobos Native Sons Liner Notes & Credits Love Special Delivery (Garcia-Espinosa) Tormid Music (BMI) Trombone - Dannie Ramirez, Drums - Aaron Ballesteros, Keyboards - Phil Parlapiano An original tune from Thee Midniters, one of the first Chicano bands out of East L.A. to make it big. They blazed the trail with such songs as “Whittier Blvd.” and “The Ballad of César Chávez.” Cesar: As a kid I’d catch Thee Midniters at Kennedy Hall on Atlantic and try to see how George (Dominguez) was playing those riffs that I couldn’t figure it out at home. Then about 20 years ago Aaron Ballesteros (Thee Midniters’ drummer) was in my home studio, recording other things. I started this riff, just goofing around, and he fell in. I said, “You know what? Why don’t we record it, man?” He did a count off and, unaccompanied, laid down the track you hear now. Perfect. First take. Conrad: In 1967 I played with Aaron in a 9-piece soul band called The Royal Checkmates, and then later in Tierra. Misery (Don Juan Mancha) Jobete Music (BMI) Drums - Jason Lozano, Percussion - Camilo Quinones, Backing Vocals - Barrence Whitfield Originally a hit by Barrett Strong, who also had the hit “Money.” Strong co-wrote some of Motown’s biggest songs. David: This is probably one of my favorite songs on the album. Barret moved to L.A. when Motown did. Conrad: We got good old Barrence on vocals, man. Isn’t that cool? We’ve known his band The Savages forever, man. We even brought ‘em out to the West Coast to tour with us.
