They have also been generous, and for every potential reason, I cannot thank them enough. c/s vii Movements in Chicano Music: Performing Culture, Performing Politics, 1965-1979 Publication No._____________ Stevan César Azcona, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2008 Co-Supervisors: José Limón and Stephen Slawek More than a confined account of the musical activity of the Chicano Movement, my research considers Chicana/o music of the period as a critical part of the protest music genres of Latin America (eg. nueva canción, canto nuevo ) and the Unites States (eg. labor/union and civil rights songs). Consequently, although situated squarely within the context of the Chicano Movement, this project necessarily examines the musical yet political links between Chicano musicians and their counterparts in the American labor movement, Civil Rights Movement, and Latin American social movements of the period. Coupled with the mobilization of their own Mexican musical and cultural traditions, Chicano musicians engaged viii these other repertoires of struggle to form the nexus of Chicana/o musical expression during the Movement. By viewing Chicana/o music within this broader lens, my research demonstrates that the complexities of the movimiento and Chicana/o political struggle cannot be adequately understood without thinking about how Chicano cultural producers engage a diversity of other race, ethnic, and regional struggles. Rather than assume a homologous relationship between music and identity, my research historicizes musical practices in the context of their struggle for political, social, and cultural rights and resources and the strategies employed by diverse communities working together to overcome the failures of governmental and institutional programs. The creative dialogues and musical exchanges that occurred among Chicano musicians suggest not only forms of ethnic solidarity but also the culturally “hybrid” expressions that shape even nationalist movements. Key to this approach is recognizing the simultaneously global and local character of Chicana/o musical production, where the flows of transnationalism circulated not only ideas, peoples, and sounds, but also political struggles. This project thus raises a number of critical questions about Chicano Movement music and its political import.     1 La Frontera- The U.S. Border Reflected in the Cinematic Lens David R. Maciel1 Introduction The U.S.-Mexico border/la frontera has the distinction of being the only place in the world where a highly developed country and a developing one meet and interact.2 This is an area of historical conflict, convergence, conflict, dependency, and interdependency, all types of transboundary links, as well as a society of astounding complexity and an evolving and extraordinarily rich culture. Distinct border styles of music, literature, art, media, and certainly visual practices have flourished in the region. Several of the most important cultural and artistic-oriented institutions, such as universities, research institutes, community centers, and museums are found in the border states of both countries. Beginning in the late 19th century and all the way to the present certain journalists, writers and visual artists have presented a distorted vision of the U.S. - Mexican border. The borderlands have been portrayed mostly as a lawless, rugged, and perilous area populated by settlers who sought a new life in the last frontier, but also criminals and crime fighters whose deeds became legendary.     A Queer Chicana/o Ethics of Representation Rasquache Camp in the Novels of Rechy and Luna Lemus Jason A. Bartles Abstract: This essay places into dialogue two queer Chicana/o novels, John Rechy’s City of Night (1963) and Felicia Luna Lemus’s Trace Elements of Random Tea Parties (2003), in order to explore their common aesthetic sensibility. This sensibility is what I call rasquache camp, a stance that arises from the complex entanglement of rasquachismo’s utilitarian aspects of making do and the funky irreverence of camp, without resulting in a dialectical sublation between the two. This essay intervenes in the recent debates on the appropriateness of using rasquachismo as a tool for studying (queer) Chicana/o cultural productions. Informed by rasquache camp, I contend that these two novels develop and employ an ethics of representing marginalized queer and Chicana/o subjects who face insurmountable adversity by overturning the paradigms of morality and literary value, not from idealized, theoretical stances but by making use of imperfect, often cobbled-together solutions. As the future-oriented projects of these novels come to a close, both texts consciously fail to achieve their goals, but this failure allows the future to remain open to new and better aesthetic and ethical interventions by others. Forty years separates the publication of John Rechy’s City of Night (1963) and Felicia Luna Lemus’s Trace Elements of Random Tea Parties (2003). This period saw important developments in the cultural history of Chicana/o and queer peoples, including the rise of the Chicano civil rights movement, the Stonewall riots, and the increasing visibility of literature, art, and criticism by and about queer Chicana/os, with the groundbreaking publication of acclaimed works by Gloria Anzaldúa and Cherríe Moraga.

    Ricardo Flores Magón and the Transnational Anarchists in Los Angeles, 1900-1922 Sergio Maldonado In the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution, many people such as Ricardo Flores Magón and the residents of Los Angeles found themselves in a perpetual state of exploitation by either the Mexican or U.S. governments. Mexicans found solidarity together, mounting resistance against insurmountable odds. Even under the direst of circumstances, their efforts in the early twentieth- century would propel Mexican-Americans’ identity into an epoch of self-realization that is uniquely transnational. For many Mexican-Americans in this period, Ricardo Flores Magón was their inspiration. In 1917 Flores Magón gave a speech in front of a group of Mexicans from the California cities of El Monte and La Puente, commemorating the manifesto of El Partido Liberal Mexicano. After years of struggle against the Mexican dictatorship, he explained to his comrades that they must leave behind the clasping of hands and anxiously asking ourselves what will be effective in resisting the assault of governmental tyranny and capitalist exploitation. The remedy is in our hands: that all who suffer the same evils unite, certain that before our solidity the abuses of those who base their strength in our separations and indifference will crumble. 1 This and similar calls for unity by Flores Magón and the many Mexicans residing in and around Los Angeles who flocked to listen to him together fostered the growth of Chicano nationalism. Flores Magón was a renowned anarchist intellectual of the Mexican Revolution. Many scholars have regarded him as an important figure in Chicano history and view him as a fundamental figure of Chicano nationalism due to his rebellious actions in Mexico and the United States.

    Style Sheet for Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies Articles submitted to Aztlán are accepted with the understanding that the author will agree to all style changes made by the copyeditor unless the changes drastically alter the author’s meaning. This style sheet is intended for use with articles written in English. Much of it also applies to those written in Spanish, but authors planning to submit Spanish-language texts should check with the editors for special instructions. 1. Reference Books Aztlán bases its style on the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, with some modifications. Spelling follows Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition. This sheet provides a guide to a number of style questions that come up frequently in Aztlán. 2. Titles and Subheads 2a. Article titles No endnotes are allowed on titles. Acknowledgments, information about the title or epigraph, or other general information about an article should go in an unnumbered note at the beginning of the endnotes (see section 12). 2b. Subheads Topical subheads should be used to break up the text at logical points. In general, Aztlán does not use more than two levels of subheads. Most articles have only one level. Authors should make the hierarchy of subheads clear by using large, bold, and/or italic type to differentiate levels of subheads. Being Edward James Olmos: Culture Clash and the Portrayal of Chicano Masculinity Abstract This paper analyzes how Culture Clash problematizes Chicano masculinity through the manipulation of two iconic Chicano characters originally popularized by two films starring dwarE d James Olmos - the pachuco from Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit (1981) and the portrayal of real-life math teacher Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver (1988). In “Stand and Deliver Pizza” (from A Bowl of Beings, 1992), Culture Clash tries to introduce new Chicano characters that can be read as masculine, and who at the same time, display alternative behaviors and characteristics, including homosexual desire. The three characters in “Stand and Deliver Pizza” represent stock icons of Chicano masculinity.

    Chicano Resistance In The Southwest Alfred Porras, Jr. INTRODUCTION There are two dimensions of racism, economic and cultural, as indicated by Christine E. Sleeter (1). The first dimension involves “violent conquest, accompanied by the construction of a belief system that the conquering group is culturally and intellectually superior to the group it has conquered.” The second dimension involves ongoing attempts by the colonizing society to consolidate and stabilize control over the land and people, and to incorporate the people into the labor force in subordinate positions. At the cultural level, the colonizing group proclaims the superiority of its social system. During times of rebellion or instability, the dominant society reinforces its dominance through violence, and through assault on the culture, language, religion, or moral fiber of the subordinate group. (2) Based on this definition of racism I begin my study of Chicano resistance in the “American” Southwest, since Sleeter’s first dimension is clearly present in the United States military takeover “with forcible measures to overturn Mexican land-ownership claims and to undermine Mexican culture, the Spanish language, and the Catholic religion."(3) This curriculum unit concerning conflict and resolution has the purpose to dispel the myth of the sleeping giant or the idea that the Mexican American people are unaware of their political potential. This curriculum unit will address three basic questions. What is conflict and resistance? What are the roots of conflict? What are the different modes of resistance? According to Robert J. Rosenbaum, the history of the Mexican-American War of the mid-1800's indicates that it was a quick war and no real resistance occurred during the take over of Mexican land and during the imposition of dominance by the U.S.
