Festival Mexico Americana Press Release LOS LOBOS EMBARKING ON “FIESTA MEXICO AMERICANA” TOUR W/ THE BALLET FOLKLORICO MEXCIANO DE CARLOS MORENO All New Studio Album “Gates of Gold” Available on 429 Records FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Los Angeles, CA: Los Lobos, the Grammy winning East L.A. legends and 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees comprised of David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin, are going back to their roots with a series of special performances with the iconic dance troupe Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Carlos Moreno on the Fiesta Mexico Americana Tour. Conceived by Eric Amada @ AMA and Artistic Director/Choreographer Carlos Moreno of the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano, Los Lobos will integrate live performances of both traditional Mexican folk songs and selections from their repertoire—“La Pistola y El Corazon” in particular—with the vibrant performers of the BFM. They’ll seamlessly share the stage, presenting popular traditional folk pieces from the regions of Guerrero, Veracruz, Tamaulipas and Chihuahua. Each ensemble will also individually perform their own artistic creations which have evolved from their Mexican-American experience. Both groups will demonstrate their dedication and commitment to exploring and honoring Mexican Folklore. The Fiesta Mexicano Tour continues through March 21. In addition, the band are also performing acoustic dates—the “Disconnected Tour” through spring. Says Steve Berlin: “The tour came to be because of the herculean effort by Carlos Moreno and Eric Amada to make it happen. BFM evidently had been dancing to a few of the songs from our album ‘La Pistola y El Corazon’ and it was they who came up with the idea of integrating the dance troupe into an evening of us playing and them dancing to both our music and some folkloric numbers we had been playing for many years. It makes for a very edifying and entertaining night." The band are embarking on this ambitious series of dates hot on the heels of the release of their all new full length studio album, “Gates of Gold,” which was released by 429 Records to rave reviews. Their first collection of new songs since 2010, the album was produced by the band. The music is as dynamic, eclectic yet distinctive as ever. Thoughtful, darkly romantic and spiritual lyrics are enhanced by slow burning blues rock, impressionistic soul, traditional Mexican folk music and straight ahead garage band jams. In addition, a new biography of the band, “Los Lobos—“Dream in Blue” written by Chris Morris—was released by the University of Texas Press. Says NPR: “’Gates of Gold,’ the group’s first album of new material in five years, practically bursts with the spirit of exploration that has marked Los Lobos’ best work over the years. Musically and culturally, the band speaks to its audience in a way few other have or could.” Los Lobos are entering their fifth decade, as the humblest of musical icons, having racked up countless accolades for their uncompromising artistry. With four Grammys in hand and the respect and admiration of their musical peers, the band still hearken back to their beginnings as “the soundtrack of the barrio” and remain a cultural touchstone for a community. • Deer Tick – Negativity
DEER TICK – NEGATIVITY John McCauley and Deer Tick have long walked a tightwire between total despair and fractured resilience, but Negativity represents a heroic leap forward on virtually all fronts for the Providence, Rhode Island-based band. Recorded earlier this year in Portland, Oregon with legendary producer/musician Steve Berlin (The Blasters, Los Lobos, and last year’s McCauley side project, Diamond Rugs), the album –Deer Tick's fifth full-length studio release, and follow-up to 2011’s acclaimed Divine Providence – is McCauley’s most personal work thus Far as well as the band’s most undeniable and universal, their Famously Freewheeling musical approach reFined here into a gloriously cohesive whole. Negativity was penned over the course oF a genuinely eventful 2012, an annus horribilus in which McCauley’s father pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy and tax Fraud, ultimately leading to prison. “Mr. Sticks” – which takes its title From the senior McCauley’s childhood nickname – is “about my father going to jail and all the things he may miss,” but when the son sings “With a hug and a kiss/You may say goodbye to all you've ever known,” you get the sense he might be talking to himselF. Issue 142 AUGUST 2ND, 2021 Is there a reader among us who doesn’t dig ZZ Top? We mourn the passing of Joseph Michael “Dusty” Hill (72), bassist, vocalist and keyboardist for the tres hombres. Blending blues, boogie, bone-crushing rock, born-for-MTV visuals, humor and outrageousness – they once took a passel of live animals on stage as part of their 1976 – 1977 Worldwide Texas Tour – Hill, drummer Frank Beard and guitarist Billy F. Gibbons have scorched stages worldwide. As a friend said, “it’s amazing how just three guys could make that much sound.” Rest in peace, Mr. Hill. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson gets inspired by the music of Renaissance composer William Byrd, and understands The Animals. Wayne Robins reviews Native Sons, the superb new album from Los Lobos. Ray Chelstowski interviews The Immediate Family, featuring studio legends Waddy Wachtel, Lee Sklar, Russ Kunkel and others, in an exclusive video interview. I offer up more confessions of a record collector. Tom Gibbs finds much to like in some new SACD discs. John Seetoo winds up his coverage of the Audio Engineering Society’s Spring 2021 AES show. Ken Sander travels through an alternate California reality. WL Woodward continues his series on troubadour Tom Waits. Russ Welton interviews cellist Jo Quail, who takes a unique approach to the instrument. In another article, he ponders what's needed for sustaining creativity. Adrian Wu looks at more of his favorite analog recordings. Cliff Chenfeld turns us on to some outstanding new music in his latest Be Here Now column.

Rochester Events is thrilled to announce Tedeschi Trucks Band Wheels Of Soul 2016 Summer Tour live at the Highland Bowl Friday, July 8th 2016. Gates Open at 6:00PM. Show starts at 7:00PM. Tedeschi Trucks Band brings their wildly praised Wheels of Soul tour back on the road this summer, adding Los Lobos and North Mississippi Allstars to their list of “rock ‘n soul” collaborators. Rochester’s highly regarded Highland Bowl will host the first stop on the tour. Tedeschi Trucks Band, led by the husband-and-wife team of singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, are fresh off of their January 2016 release of Let Me Get By, their debut album for Fantasy Records. The Associated Press stated “Tedeschi Trucks Band has already released one of the great records of the year,” and following the band’s recent filming of Austin City Limits The Austin Chronicle added “There’s no contemporary match for the Tedeschi Trucks Band in that their third LP manages the nearly impossible combination of growth and improvement where none seems possible or necessary.” Since their inception in 2010, TTB have seen both of their previous albums debut in the Top 15 of the Billboard 200, and won a Grammy for their debut album Revelator, an album hailed by Rolling Stone as a “masterpiece.” They tour over 200 days of the year and have built a dedicated following around the world, one powerful performance at a time.

  • Final LOS LOBOS GATES of GOLD
LOS LOBOS Gates of Gold “We’re a Mexican American band, and no word describes America like immigrant. Most of us are children of immigrants, so it’s perhaps natural that the songs we create celebrate America in this way.” So says Louie Perez, the “poet laureate” and primary wordsmith of Los Lobos, when describing the songs on the band’s new album, Gates of Gold. The stories on Gates of Gold are snapshots of experiences that Perez and his band mates have had, based on where they are emotionally and how they respond to evolving life circumstances. “We live out loud most of the time and share our life this way, but then there are more intrinsic things that happen, and our songs are part of the way we react to them. We sit down and basically tell people what has happened. We certainly didn’t start this project with aspirations to create the musical equivalent to great American literary works.” After celebrating their 40th anniversary with the cleverly titled 2013 live album Disconnected In New York City, the hard working, constantly touring band – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin – leaps headfirst into their fifth decade with an invitation to join them as they open fresh and exciting new Gates of Gold, their first full length studio album since 2010’s Tin Can Trust (a Grammy nominee for Best Americana Album) and second with Savoy/429 Records. The dynamic songwriting, deeply poetic lyrics, thoughtful romantic and spiritual themes and eclectic blend of styles on the 11 track collection has resulted in an American saga in the rich literary tradition of legendary authors John Steinbeck and William Faulkner.

Battle of Los Angeles | 719 The Battle of Los Angeles: The Cultural Politics of Chicana/o Music in the Greater Eastside Victor Hugo Viesca Chicanos are, when you call yourself that, you know your history, you know where you came from, you know where you need to go. —Yoatl, Aztlán Underground1 I try to find my own Chicana sensibility in the dance. —Martha Gonzales, Quetzal2 ast Los Angeles is the center of a flourishing musical cultural scene with a renewed “Chicana/o” sensibility.3 This scene is being led by a E collective of socially conscious and politically active Latin-fusion bands that emerged in the 1990s, including Aztlán Underground, Blues Experiment, Lysa Flores, Ozomatli, Ollin, Quetzal, Quinto Sol, Slowrider, and Yeska. These groups compose original songs that weave together the sounds of the Ameri- cas, from soul, samba, and the son jarocho to reggae, rumba, and rap. Multilin- gual lyrics in Spanish, English, Cálo, or Nahuatl that speak to themes of urban exile, indigenous identity, and multiracial unity are layered over the music to produce a sonic Chicana/o imaginary of the global city in the twenty-first century.4 Several of the bands within the scene have released full-length al- bums on their own independent record labels such as Xicano Records and Film (Aztlán Underground and Quinto Sol), De Volada Records (Slowrider and Blues Experiment), and Lysa Flores’s Bring Your Love Records (see dis- cography). The bands often collaborate with one another, producing or play- ing on each other’s records and touring on the same bill.
