Rochester Events is thrilled to announce Tedeschi Trucks Band Wheels Of Soul 2016 Summer Tour live at the Highland Bowl Friday, July 8th 2016. Gates Open at 6:00PM. Show starts at 7:00PM. Tedeschi Trucks Band brings their wildly praised Wheels of Soul tour back on the road this summer, adding Los Lobos and North Mississippi Allstars to their list of “rock ‘n soul” collaborators. Rochester’s highly regarded Highland Bowl will host the first stop on the tour. Tedeschi Trucks Band, led by the husband-and-wife team of singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, are fresh off of their January 2016 release of Let Me Get By, their debut album for Fantasy Records. The Associated Press stated “Tedeschi Trucks Band has already released one of the great records of the year,” and following the band’s recent filming of Austin City Limits The Austin Chronicle added “There’s no contemporary match for the Tedeschi Trucks Band in that their third LP manages the nearly impossible combination of growth and improvement where none seems possible or necessary.” Since their inception in 2010, TTB have seen both of their previous albums debut in the Top 15 of the Billboard 200, and won a Grammy for their debut album Revelator, an album hailed by Rolling Stone as a “masterpiece.” They tour over 200 days of the year and have built a dedicated following around the world, one powerful performance at a time. Recent highlights include four consecutive sold out shows at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, as well as a surprise guest appearance on the debut of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. NPR has praised Trucks and Tedeschi as “two of the best roots rock musicians of their generation.” Led by Trucks, #16 of the top 100 Guitarists of All Time (Rolling Stone), and powerhouse vocalist Tedeschi, the twelve-piece group enlists two drummers, three vocalists, a three-piece horn section, bass, and a multi-instrumentalist keyboard player for what is a greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts collective. The Mexican American rock band Los Lobos, made internationally famous by their 1987 hit “La Bamba” from the film of the same name, join the Wheels of Soul Tour with a wealth of experience, excitement and soul. After celebrating their 40th anniversary with the 2013 live album Disconnected In New York City, the hard working, constantly touring band – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin – have leapt headfirst into their fifth decade with the September 2015 release of Gates of Gold, their first full length studio album since 2010’s Tin Can Trust (a Grammy nominee for Best Americana Album) and second with Savoy/429 Records. Los Lobos saxophonist Steve Berlin said, "Rarely do we get asked to tour with two of our favorite bands but with this summer's package of us with Tedeschi Trucks and the North Mississippi Allstars, now we have. We can't wait to hit the road with all our pals in both bands, and we look forward to the jamming that will no doubt ensue." The North Mississippi Allstars, crowned “Americana music luminaries” by NPR, are Grammy- nominated Southern blues and roots rock masters. Their most recent record, September 2013’s World Boogie Is Coming, was self-produced at their own Zebra Ranch Studios in Hernando, Mississippi. Composed of Dickinson brothers Luther and Cody, sons of Memphis legendary producer and artist Jim Dickinson, World Boogie Is Coming features special guest appearances by Robert Plant, Duwayne and Gary Burnside, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Sharde Thomas, Chris Chew, Steve Selvidge, Lightnin’ Malcom and others. On World Boogie Is Coming, the Allstars infuse their Mississippi roots with powerful rock ‘n roll. “We are proud to be with our friends, all of whom participate in carrying on musical traditions while allowing them to evolve and strengthen,” says Luther Dickinson looking ahead to this summer’s tour. “It's an honor to play modern day Roots music with musicians as powerful as TTB and Los Lobos. I always say, ‘we are fortunate to live in the age of Derek Trucks.’” There will be a limited number of VIP tickets available for the Highland Bowl show which include: Guaranteed up-close seating, catered BBQ dinner from Sticky Lips BBQ (Gluten free & vegetarian available), private full bar, and private air-conditioned restrooms. ($125.00 + svc. chgs.). Remainder of tickets are General Admission Lawn Seating ($57.50 + svc. chgs. in advance /$65.00day of show if available). Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 25, 2021 Sweetland Amphitheatre to Host Steve Earle & the Dukes and Los Lobos Saturday, August 28th Tickets Available at sweetlandamp.com LaGrange, Ga. August 25, 2021 – Two incredible acts are teaming up for a fantastic night of music at Sweetland Amphitheatre Saturday, August 28th - Steve Earle & the Dukes and Los Lobos. Steve Earle & the Dukes Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his debut record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. Subsequent releases like The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards. Los Lobos The journey of Los Lobos began in 1973, as the band earned their stripes playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. The band evolved in the 1980s as it tapped into L.A.’s burgeoning punk and college rock scenes. Early on, Los Lobos enjoyed critical success, winning the Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance for “Anselma” from its 1983 EP And a Time to Dance. In 1987 with the release of the Ritchie Valens biopic, La Bamba, the quintet’s cover of Valens’ signature song topped the charts in the U.S.

  • 1 This Isn't Paradise, This Is Hell: Discourse, Performance and Identity in the Hawai'i Metal Scene a Dissertation Submitte
1 THIS ISN’T PARADISE, THIS IS HELL: DISCOURSE, PERFORMANCE AND IDENTITY IN THE HAWAI‘I METAL SCENE A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN AMERICAN STUDIES DECEMBER 2012 By Benjamin Hedge Olson Dissertation Committee: Kathleen Sands, Chairperson David E. Stannard Vernadette Gonzalez Roderick Labrador Helen J. Baroni Keywords: metal, popular music, popular culture, religion, subculture, Hawai‘i 2 Abstract The island of Oahu is home to probably the most ethnically diverse metal scene in the United States. Contemporary Hawai`i prides itself on being a “model of multiculturalism” free of the racism and ethnic strife that is endemic to the continent; however, beneath this superficial openness and tolerance exist deeply felt class, ethnic, and racial tensions. The metal scene in Hawai`i experiences these conflicting impulses towards inclusion and exclusion as profoundly as any other aspect of contemporary Hawaiian culture, but there is a persistent hope within the metal scene that subcultural identity can triumph over such tensions. Complicating this process is the presence of white military personnel, primarily born and raised on the continental United States, whose cultural attitudes, performances of masculinity, and conception of metal culture differ greatly from that of local metalheads. The misunderstandings, hostilities, bids for subcultural capital, and attempted bridge-building that take place between metalheads in Hawai‘i constitute a subculturally specific attempt to address anxieties concerning the presence of the military, the history of race and racism in Hawai`i, and the complicated, often conflicting desires for both openness and exclusivity that exist within local culture.

Top 10 Acts To See At The Green River Music Festival Celebrating 30 years of music, art and fun, The Green River Music Festival will take place this weekend from July 8 – 10 at Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, Massachusetts. It’s a stacked bill featuring a few rock ‘n’ roll legends, folk and soul upstarts and even a handful of local acts. There will be music happening on three stages and everywhere you look there will be something incredible taking place. There are also going to be after parties going on in the heart of the town. For you to know who to check out and when, here are my Top 10 Acts to see this weekend: 10 ) Winterpills (Sunday 1:10pm @ Four Rivers Stage) One of the locals on the list, Northampton, Massachusetts, folk rock act Winterpills have incredible harmonies that stick with you and never let go. When Philip Price and Flora Reed combine their voices beautifully, stunning things happen. The band possesses soothing acoustic-based rock music that has as much power and emphasis as an act that’s fully electrified. I’m excited to see how Winterpills are live, and I know a bunch of others are as well. Check them out to start the last day of the festival off right. 9.) Shakey Graves (Saturday 7:35pm @ Green River Stage) Shakey Graves is the moniker of Alejandro Rose-Garcia from Austin, Texas. He brings an authentic brand of rock ‘n’ roll to the forefront by melding folk and blues to create awesome Americana. Rose- Garcia has a one-man band set-up and he has an uncanny ability to captivate an audience in an instant.

  • La Bamba” by Maegan Moriarty ‘20
Some notes on “La Bamba” by Maegan Moriarty ‘20 Their album It’s Time conveys the group member’s experiences of being born in LA of immigrant parents, while simultaneously creating Chicano protest music. They are cognizant of the culture and history of son jarocho, and maintain the music’s political edge. The album’s title purposefully does not say what it’s time for because the artists said, “you know what it’s time for — you know and I know. You know what you’re supposed to do, and we want you to do what you’re supposed to do,’” (Johnson 2012). Since the artists leave the interpretation of the album in the hands of the listener, the group is forcing its audience to take control of their thoughts and actions before even listening to their work. A song that particularly shows Las Cafeteras commitment to political activism and their appreciation of son jarocho is “La Bamba Rebelde,” and demonstrates how a widely-listened to song can be utilized to mobilize a group of people. This song is a new version of the Mexican folk song which was made popular by Ritchie Valens in his 1958 rendition and Los Lobos remake in 1987 (Johnson 2012). The song “La Bamba Rebelde,” echoes traditional son jarocho through its instrumentation. At 0:00-0:35, the percussion instruments cajón, marimbula and quijada de burro are audible. The cajón appears to set the beat of the song and the quijada de burro adds a constant additional layer, emphasizing the first note of every four beats.
