Legends Los Lobos joined by Bay Area party band California Honeydrops, Award Winning Songwriter Tift Merritt, and Kate Wolf’s Guitarist Nina Gerber with Pam Delgado and Jeri Jones on the main stage. Tickets are $55 for presale, $65 the day of and can be purchased at https://fanlink.to/EarleFest2017. Los Lobos Los Lobos were already East L.A. neighborhood legends, Sunset Strip regulars and a Grammy Award winning band (Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance) by the time they recorded their major label debut How Will The Wolf Survive? in 1984. Although the album’s name and title song were inspired by a National Geographic article about real life wolves in the wild, the band—David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin—saw parallels with their struggle to gain mainstream rock success while maintaining their Mexican roots. Perez, the band’s drummer, once called their powerhouse mix of rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues and traditional Spanish and Mexican music “the soundtrack of the barrio.” Three decades, two more Grammys, a worldwide smash single (“La Bamba”) and thousands of rollicking performances across the globe later, Los Lobos is surviving quite well -- and still jamming with the same raw intensity as they had when they began in that garage in 1973. The California Honeydrops The California Honeydrops don’t just play music—they throw parties. Led by dynamic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski, and drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their shows. They’ve taken the party all over the world, playing festivals of all kinds and touring widely across North America, Europe and Australia. In 2016 the Honeydrops were honored to support Bonnie Raitt on her North America release tour—and in the past have been privileged to support the likes of B.B. King, Allen Toussaint, Buddy Guy, and Dr. John. Whether in those high-profile performances or in more intimate venues where the band itself can leave the stage and get down on the dance floor, the California Honeydrops’ shared vision and purpose remain: to make the audience dance and sing. Tift Merrit Tift Merritt is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and recording artist. The Americana Music Association nominated Tift for 2004 Album, Artist and Song of the Year. "Broken," the first single from Another Country, parked itself at #1 on the Americana Airplay Chart for weeks, and was nominated for Song of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Tift Merritt’s music defies categorization. Her uniquely satisfying stew of rock and roll, soul, folk and country has record stores scratching their heads and audiences dancing in the aisles and telling their friends. There’s food for thought there, too—Tift knew she wanted to be a writer before she knew she wanted to be a musician, and her lyrics are carefully and finely crafted. Nina Gerber Nina Gerber plus Pam Delgado and Jeri Jones (of Blame Sally) will be performing the songs of Audrey Auld. After carving a career out of what some might call the shadows, guitarist Nina Gerber is at last beginning to dare the light. Her first album as a leader, Not Before Noon, follows two decades which brought her to prominence without ever placing her name on the front of an album cover. Since her accompaniment of Kate Wolf first earned her recognition, her acute skills as performer, producer and arranger have continued to deepen. Her contributions to acoustic music have earned her a following as loyal as for the numerous high talents she has accompanied - proving the shadows equal to the spotlight in the creation of honest, powerful, and beautiful music. Arielle Arielle is considered a music industry triple threat because she could enjoy an impressive career solely as a singer, songwriter or guitar player, but she has combined all three of those gifts to create a unique artistry that defies genres and borders. She recently opened for Gregg Allman and traveled to Los Angeles in late September as the lone female and only Nashvillian to compete in Guitar Center’s Onstage with Vince Gill contest. A New Jersey native who was raised in Sonoma County California, Arielle has already made the cover of Guitar Player magazine and released the single “California,” which reached No. 3 on CMT Pure. Timothy O’Neil Band Timothy O'Neil is a songwriter from Temecula, California, currently submerged in the Sonoma County Americana scene, Timothy O'Neil Band bares its influences of punk-rock and mixes it into songs, nodding to genres of bluegrass, folk, and singer-songwriter. Be prepared to sing along and have one hell of a good time. Dirty Cello From China to Italy, and all over the U.S., Dirty Cello brings the world a high energy and unique spin on blues and bluegrass. Led by vivacious cross-over cellist, Rebecca Roudman, Dirty Cello is cello like you’ve never heard before. From down home blues with a wailing cello to virtuosic stompin’ bluegrass, Dirty Cello is a band that gets your heart thumping and your toes tapping! Emily Lois Emily is a Sonoma County singer songwriter performing covers and originals at local venues, cafes, open mics and farmers markets. The Earle Baum Center Opened in 1999, the Earle Baum Center (EBC) is a 501(c)3 Community Benefit Organization, providing services to people with sight loss throughout Northern California. This unique community-oriented center, located on 17 beautiful acres in Santa Rosa, California, offers Independent Living Skills, Orientation and Mobility Training, a Low Vision Clinic and Assistive Technology services to people of all ages with sight loss. • Sweetland Amphitheatre to Host Steve Earle & the Dukes and Los Lobos Saturday, August 28Th
Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 25, 2021 Sweetland Amphitheatre to Host Steve Earle & the Dukes and Los Lobos Saturday, August 28th Tickets Available at sweetlandamp.com LaGrange, Ga. August 25, 2021 – Two incredible acts are teaming up for a fantastic night of music at Sweetland Amphitheatre Saturday, August 28th - Steve Earle & the Dukes and Los Lobos. Steve Earle & the Dukes Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his debut record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. Subsequent releases like The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards. Los Lobos The journey of Los Lobos began in 1973, as the band earned their stripes playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. The band evolved in the 1980s as it tapped into L.A.’s burgeoning punk and college rock scenes. Early on, Los Lobos enjoyed critical success, winning the Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance for “Anselma” from its 1983 EP And a Time to Dance. In 1987 with the release of the Ritchie Valens biopic, La Bamba, the quintet’s cover of Valens’ signature song topped the charts in the U.S.

  • Discouraging Racial Preferences in Adoptions
Discouraging Racial Preferences in Adoptions Solangel Maldonado* More than 20,000 white Americans go abroad each year to adopt children from other countries, the majority of whom are not white. At the same time, there are more African American children available for adoption than there are African American families seeking to adopt them. While Americans claim there are few healthy infants available for adoption in the United States, hundreds of African American newborns each year are placed with white families in Canada and other countries. Tracing the history of transracial adoption in the United States, this Article argues that one reason why Americans go abroad to adopt is race. The racial hierarchy in the adoption market places white children at the top, African American children at the bottom, and children of other races in between, thereby rendering Asian or Latin American children more desirable to adoptive parents than African American children. Drawing on the rich literature on cognitive bias, this Article debunks the myths about domestic and international adoptions and shows that racial preferences, even if unconscious, play a role in many Americans’ decisions to adopt internationally. This Article proposes that the law discourage adoptions based on racial preferences by requiring that Americans seeking to adopt internationally, while there are available children in the United States who meet their non-race-based criteria, show non-race-based reasons for going abroad. * Associate Professor, Seton Hall University School of Law. • “The Greatest Gift Is the Realization That Life Does Not Consist Either In
“The greatest gift is the realization that life does not consist either in wallowing in the past or peering anxiously into the future; and it is appalling to contemplate the great number of often painful steps by which ones arrives at a truth so old, so obvious, and so frequently expressed. It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now –this day-this hour.” Charles Macomb Flandrau Ernest Hemingway drank here. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living.

  • La Bamba” by Maegan Moriarty ‘20
Some notes on “La Bamba” by Maegan Moriarty ‘20 Their album It’s Time conveys the group member’s experiences of being born in LA of immigrant parents, while simultaneously creating Chicano protest music. They are cognizant of the culture and history of son jarocho, and maintain the music’s political edge. The album’s title purposefully does not say what it’s time for because the artists said, “you know what it’s time for — you know and I know. You know what you’re supposed to do, and we want you to do what you’re supposed to do,’” (Johnson 2012). Since the artists leave the interpretation of the album in the hands of the listener, the group is forcing its audience to take control of their thoughts and actions before even listening to their work. A song that particularly shows Las Cafeteras commitment to political activism and their appreciation of son jarocho is “La Bamba Rebelde,” and demonstrates how a widely-listened to song can be utilized to mobilize a group of people. This song is a new version of the Mexican folk song which was made popular by Ritchie Valens in his 1958 rendition and Los Lobos remake in 1987 (Johnson 2012). The song “La Bamba Rebelde,” echoes traditional son jarocho through its instrumentation. At 0:00-0:35, the percussion instruments cajón, marimbula and quijada de burro are audible. The cajón appears to set the beat of the song and the quijada de burro adds a constant additional layer, emphasizing the first note of every four beats.

Blending blues, boogie, bone-crushing rock, born-for-MTV visuals, humor and outrageousness – they once took a passel of live animals on stage as part of their 1976 – 1977 Worldwide Texas Tour – Hill, drummer Frank Beard and guitarist Billy F. • Legendariska Los Lobos Åter Till Gävle Konserthus
