Candidate, The Saint Andrew The First Called Georgian University, Tbilisi, Georgia Abstract: Exactly a hundred years has passed since Nikos Kazantzakis,-a Greek writer, humanist and philosopher travelled in Georgia for the first time, but his impressions and emotions about travelling in Georgia three times, which are described in his creation, still remain as interesting things for the Greek researchers and historians. The journey of the writer coincided with the advent of the bold and historical hardship when Georgia gained three years of independence from the Russian Empire and subsequently became the victim of the annexation of Bolshevik Russia again. This is also the period when the history of Georgia and Greece coincided, because of historical cataclysms happened at that time in the region. This is the period when ethnic people of the Ponto origin who were expelled from Turkey gathered in Georgia, particularly in Batumi in anticipation of returning to their historical homeland,-Greece. Exactly Nikos Kazantzakis was turned out the first and the last, as a civil servant, head of the repatriation program of the Ponto Greeks and he was sent to Georgia by this mission. It was his first touch with Georgia and in spite of the two-week’s business trip which was full of responsibilities, the writer got fascinated by Georgia and had traveled twice for a long time in this country.

  • Ascension to Spirituality According to N. Kazantzakis (Based on the Novel “The Last Temptation”)
M.I. LAzARIdI (Kyrgyzstan) Ascension to Spirituality According to N. Kazantzakis (based on the novel “The Last Temptation”) Every man worthy of being called a son of man bears his cross and mounts his Golgotha. Many, indeed most, reach the first or second step, collapse pantingly in the middle of the journey, and do not attain the summit of Golgotha… Afraid of crucifixion, they grow fainthearted: they do not know that the cross is the only path to resurrection. There is no other path*. Nikos Kazantzakis The legendary Cretan Nikos Kazantzakis, a Greek writer, who was ranked among some critics to the category of the greatest writers of the XX century, lived a fantastic eventful life full of diverse interests and extraordinary efforts spent on physical and spiritual salvation of man. A writer, a philosopher, a traveler and a journalist N. Kazantzakis studied in Greece (Law), in France (where he attended lectures on the philosophy of Henri Bergson); the writer delved into the essence of all the world’s religions, studied the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, Vladimir Lenin; being a journalist he traveled around the world (Germany, France, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Israel, China, Japan, Russia (where he spent three years), and Mount Athos (where he had a 40 day sojourn). N. Kazantzakis was friends with Angelos Sikelianos, a wonderful Greek poet who (along with his wife E. Palmer) was at the forefront of the revival of the Delphic Games. In 1914 they journeyed to Greece historical sites, so rich in its ancient and Christian monuments. This close spiritual fellowship was useful for both of them in their not just only difficult, but the tragic fate: each of them made his way of the cross.

  • The Politics of Culture: Historical Moments in Greek Musical Modernism
The Politics of Culture: Historical Moments in Greek Musical Modernism Vol. I Ioannis Tsagkarakis Royal Holloway University of London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2013 Ion Zottos (Alexandria 1944 – Athens 2010) In Memoriam DECLARATION OF AUTHORSHIP I have read and understood the regulations for Doctoral students as they are described in the Annual Handbook of the Music Department at Royal Holloway University of London concerning plagiarism. I undertake that all the material presented for examination is my own work and has not been written for me, in whole or in part, by another person. I also undertake that any quotation or paraphrase from the published or unpublished work of another individual has been acknowledged in the present thesis London 2013 Ioannis Tsagkarakis i ABSTRACT This thesis spotlights eleven formative moments or ‘events’ in the history of twentieth-century art music in Greece. They date from 1908 to 1979 and are ordered by two master narratives, the ‘Great Idea’ and the ‘European Idea’, concepts with multifarious implications for the making of contemporary Greece. The nature of the musical works presented during these events, the particular kind of reception they received, the debates they generated, and the role their composers hoped they would play in the construction of a contemporary Greek musical identity are some of the indicative issues that will be discussed, and always in relation to the prevailing political and social context. More specifically, I will try to show by way of these events how politics and culture were inextricably tied together. In some cases the events directly mirrored the political divisions and social tensions of their time, while in others they formed an easy (‘innocent’) prey to political agendas – indigenous and foreign – that were at some remove from matters aesthetic.
