Pfaffenberger, Killick, and Lansing have observed the causes, and what is lost by failing to shake these off.1 Because these activities occupy different categories in the industrialized world, attempts to interpret their coincidence in other cultures lean to the dismissive. Ancient Greek Myth and Drama in Greek Cinema (1930–2012): an Overall Approach
Konstantinos KyriaKos ANCIENT GREEK MYTH AND DRAMA IN GREEK CINEMA (1930–2012): AN OVERALL APPROACH Ι. Introduction he purpose of the present article is to outline the relationship between TGreek cinema and themes from Ancient Greek mythology, in a period stretching from 1930 to 2012. This discourse is initiated by examining mov- ies dated before WW II (Prometheus Bound, 1930, Dimitris Meravidis)1 till recent important ones such as Strella. A Woman’s Way (2009, Panos Ch. Koutras).2 Moreover, movies involving ancient drama adaptations are co-ex- amined with the ones referring to ancient mythology in general. This is due to a particularity of the perception of ancient drama by script writers and di- rectors of Greek cinema: in ancient tragedy and comedy film adaptations,3 ancient drama was typically employed as a source for myth. * I wish to express my gratitude to S. IDEAS AND IDEALS IN CONTEMPORARY GREEK LITERATURE* Few of the modern Greek authors, poets and novelists, are known in the English-speaking world. The poems of Constantine Cavafis have been trans lated time and again in England and in the United States. George Seferis, the Nobel-Prize winner of 1963 is also known from several translations of his poems. Nikos Kazantzakis is the most popular of all. His lengthy Odyssey, his novels and his travel books are still avidly read in the United States. Less known here, already however known and respected in Europe, especially in France, in Germany and in the Scandinavian countries, is another poet and novelist, Pandelis Prevelakis, of whom two books have been so for published in English. With the exception of some sporadic translations of poems and novels, this is almost all that is known from the contemporary Greek Literature in the United States and generally in the English-speaking world. This is certainly very little, but there is a justification to it. First and most important, other aspects of Greece seem to be more exciting than her modem literature, among them being the history, art and literature of the Classical and the Byzantine times. There is also the difficulty of the modem Greek language, which is written and spoken only by the. Greeks, less than ten million of them. Among the great groups of Arabic, Slav, Latin and Anglo-Saxon languages, Greek seems to be something exotic — as exotic also is Hebrew. I am not going to suggest that the modern Greek language deserves a greater number of students than the languages of the Arabs, of the Slavs, or of the Anglo-Saxons. -

A Note on Eteocretan Phi Or Koppa*

Thompson Selwyn College, Cambridge [email protected] ABSTRACT A grapheme found in three Eteocretan inscriptions has been identified as either phi or koppa. On epigraphic grounds the identification with phi in at least two of those inscriptions is suspect. On the other hand the distribution of the grapheme suggests initially that it cannot be koppa: it is found at word end, pre‐consonantally and before non‐back vowels but never before back vowels, while kappa is attested before /o/. This distribution remains unexplained, however, if it is identified as phi, but could be accounted for if the grapheme koppa were adopted to represent an Eteocretan labiovelar /kw/ which had undergone (as is cross‐linguistically common) dissimilatory loss of lip‐rounding adjacent to [+rounded] vowels. Keywords: Eteocretan, Crete, epigraphy, phonology Eteocretan is the name given to the unknown, non‐Greek language(s) of one surviving alphabetic inscription (and one surviving word in another inscription) from Dreros and five from Praisos, dating from between the seventh and second centuries BCE. The corpus is collected and comprehensively discussed by Duhoux (1982). Three of the inscriptions from Praisos (PRA 2, 3, 5) contain a sign, represented here as * I am very grateful to Dr P. M.
