  • COMMUNICATION TRADE ROUTES and HIGHWAYS at the Opening Of
COMMUNICATION TRADE ROUTES AND HIGHWAYS At the opening of the seventeenth century, there were no metalled roads in the district, though the main routes of land travel were clearly defined by avenues of trees and occasional rest-houses, known as serais. The travelers and merchants could pass the night in comfort and comparative security within their walled enclosures. These roads were of beaten earth and connected the district with the adjoining regions. However they were used only in the dry season. The whole district seems to have been traversed by a network of such roads. These roads connected the district with Basti, Faizabad, Azamgarh, Deoria and Ballia. Gorakhpur was a chief garrison town on the north of Ghaghra in the medieval period. Roads which were unmetalled connected it with Bihar and the adjoining areas. To know what transport would be like in the district of the seventeenth century or an earlier period, one may have to picture to oneself trains of ox- coaches (raths) and ox-carts (bahlis) with hammocks attached to the vehicles for carrying fodder for the animals, as well as small luggage, with a posse of horses ridden by middle class people and palanquins (palki) used by the elites or caravans of oxen, ponies and other pack animals laden with goods and flanked by foot-pilots. There were no bridges one the rivers which had to be crossed by means of ferry boats. The carts and wagons were fastened to boats by the wheel and the pole. The oxen and the horses swimming all the while, goods had to be unloaded before the pack-animals were driven into the rivers for negotiating their waters.

The city of Indore is sometimes called Ahilyanagari in her memory. Ahimsa Express 1095/ 1096 Ahmadabad – Pune (CR Pune division) The name is also sometimes given to 1087/ 1088 Veraval – Pune Express, 1089/ 1090 Jodhpur – Pune Express and 1091/ 1092 Bhuj – Pune Express, as all these trains are “derived” from 1095/ 1096. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit term meaning “to do no harm” (literally, the avoidance of violence or himsa). Ahimsa was one of the main principles which Gandhiji followed in his life. Pune was the place where Gandhiji was imprisoned and where his wife passed away, and Ahmadabad was where he set up his Ashram.

  • Indian Railways Line History 2. North Eastern Railway
Indian Railways line history 2. North Eastern Railway The following is a summary of history of the lines of the North Eastern Railway as it was formerly constituted (i.e. between 1955 and the reorganisations of 2002-3). Opening and closure dates are for regular traffic, dates in brackets are for goods traffic. The condition of the lines, including spelling of place names, is, as far as possible, as at Independence (15th August 1947). Letters in brackets after a place name indicate a physical junction to another system. Lines are organised geographically, according to their branching from the main line. A code precedes the name of the line. This uses a formula based on the geographical organisation: X is the main line X1 is the first branch X1.1 a line off the first branch and so on. The system does not number lines used for goods traffic only (indicated by a G), lines closed before 1947 (indicated by a ~ before the name of the line) or lines opened after 1947 (indicated by a + sign). (det) indicates a line detached from the main system. The main source has been the ‘History of Indian Railways Supplement’ (Simla, 1968), a copy of which is available at the British Library. This is a list of the opening dates and distances (in kilometres – some discrepancies due to conversion possibly) of the various lines opened up to around 1955. As far as possible, the information has been cross-referenced with the Indian Railways Administrative Reports (various titles, issued variously in London, Simla and Delhi). Information on lines opened after around 1955 is derived from publicly available internet sources and must be regarded as highly speculative.

In continuation of our earlier memorandums submitted on 02.07.2018 & 26.07.2018, we submit this memorandum, prepared on the basis of actual number of staff covered under incentive system. Incentive system followed in Production Units & Workshops of Indian Railways is one of the effective management systems in the the Indian Railways. Existence of incentive system makes both management & working class accountable, not only for money paid, but for the performance of entire PU/Workshops. Product range of Indian Railway’s PU & Workshops transformed from Steam age Loco to 3 phase Locos, riveted coaches to Train set, heavy wagon to light weight wagons, etc. Phasing out of old technology & design and adapting to modern technology & new designs happened smoothly because of the existence of incentive system. A few example, CLW commissioned for manufacturing steam locos is now manufactures state of art 3 Phase Electric locos, DLW commissioned for manufacturing Diesel loco now started manufacturing Electrical locos, RCF started manufacturing ICF designed coaches has switched over to manufacturing of LHB coaches, ICF is in the process of switching over to manufacture of Train set, Rail Wheel Factory brought down the dependency on import of wheels & axles, etc.
