HISTORY OF THE BRONX During the early-mid 1600’s European colonizers settled the land that is now known as the Bronx. Giovanni Da Verrazzano and Henry Hudson were among first explorers to venture the lands of the Native Americans. A Native American tribe known as the Wekkguasegeeck, which was a part of the Lenape’s Lenapehoking territory, occupied the land prior to its colonization. Through the course of time European colonists converted the area into mostly farmland. Originally, the Bronx area was owned by the Dutch colonizers; however the English had seized the land from them.
