Solange man nur rational weiterarbeitet, kommt nichts wesentlich Neues. Es wird vielleicht immer genauer systematisiert, es werden immer subtilere Fragen erfunden, aber die eigentlichen Durchbrüche, in denen dann wieder große Theologie neu entsteht, kommen nicht einfach aus dem rationalen Geschäft der Theologie, sondern aus einem charismatischen, prophetischen Anstoß heraus. Insofern, glaube ich, gehören Prophetie und Theologie eng zusammen. Die Theologie als wissenschaftliche Theologie im strengen Sinn ist nicht prophetisch, aber sie wird nur wirklich lebendige Theologie, wenn sie von einem prophetischen Impuls angeschoben und erleuchtet ist. Ellen Davis, Ordination of Anthony Petrotta, Sermon on Isaiah 6 IX X ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS When I lectured Old Testament Theology in Indonesia (Java), the first student who wrote her thesis under my guidance was a young Moluccan theologian. It was in the early years after the conflict in the Moluccas, and she and her family had been marked by violence and loss. She approached me with the idea of writing a small missiology for her Moluccan context, based on the Isaian Songs of the Suffering Servant. It was her desire to return home, to serve the church and her people as a Christian minister who knew how to build bridges instead of deepening distances, how to bear suffering instead of inflicting it on others. She longed for a time to heal and for preaching that facilitated healing. In her way of believing, in her homilies and in how she studied Theology, she taught me not to flee from danger, but to search for a way of being a redemptive presence amidst of it. While writing the final draft of this PhD study, I have been thinking of her. Not only of her, but of other Christian ministers as well who, in complex and sometimes dangerous contexts, search for truth, integrity and wisdom. Though this study will predominantly analyse sermons from well-known preachers, I am deeply convinced that the subject we discuss, (namely living prophetic speech), is performed by a numerous amount of anonymous, local preachers, male and female, world-wide and in a variety of ways. Preachers, who in their own contextual circumstances discern destructiva, embody grace, search for redemption, and make congregations resistant. Where we use ‘he’ or ‘she’ in this study, this background should be considered. In this book, we offer a reconstruction of an intriguing feature in the practice of preaching, heuristically called the ‘prophetic dimension in preaching'. The challenge of the study was to select paradigmatic examples of this dimension, to describe the phenomenon in a consentient way and to develop a conceptual grip on this elusive factor in preaching. It is my hope that the joy of studying and analysing these sermons resound through this book, that the captivating, often paradoxical, power present in the sermons will inspire others and that my conceptual reconstruction will stimulate further study. XI In this PhD project, I have been accompanied and guided by a fine team of scholars: prof. dr. Gerrit Immink, prof. dr. Edward van ‘t Slot, dr. Theo Pleizier and dr. Bert de Leede. Through their encouragement and discipline, their scholarly sharpness and shared experience in serving the church, they have stimulated me in this study, and I am grateful for the opportunity I received to theologise in the company of these four scholars. I especially thank prof. Immink, who guided me from the start of the project as promotor. The way he combines a love for the Protestant theological and ecclesiastical tradition with a solidarity to the present context, has been a source of inspiration for me these years. Writing the acknowledgements of a book is a way of deepening the awareness of how connected with others one’s own life is. This study is not written in a vacuum. Thankfully, there always was a congregation to be part of and to be nourished by. In Indonesia, the Christian Church in Northern Central Java (GKJTU), in the Netherlands, the Reformed congregations in Breukelen and in Zeist. I am thankful for the stimulating way dr. Michael Rainer from LIT Verlag made the publication of this study possible, and I am honoured that the study is published in the series of ‘Homiletische Perspektive’. During the research, I had the opportunity to join three international colloquia, and the discussions with prof. dr. Albrecht Grözinger, prof. dr. Jan Hermelink, prof. dr. David Plüß and their PhD students, increased the joy of studying Theology and doing practical theological research. I also thank the Dutch local preachers whose sermons I will discuss in chapter 8, for their consent to analyse their sermons. With respect and gratitude, I want to name Tobias Hendrik van der Hoeven (1957-2014) here. In my coming of age years, it was his example and his friendship that convinced me of the dignity, the freedom, and the joy of being a minister in the congregation of Jesus Christ. In the last months before publishing this study, Els Veurink-Geurtsen meticulously screened the text and made it readable and accessible, Gerard Bakker was prepared to look at this book with the eye of a designer and to help me prepare it, and Ira Wilhelm translated the summary in German. In an original way, the icon illustrates and integrates the power of the illuminative (see Moses) and the interruptive (see Aaron) dimension in prophetic speech. Finally, thankfully there always was a family to be part of. Christian Wiman wrote that ‘life is always a question of intensity, and intensity is always a matter of focus’. I am grateful to have been raised in a family and by parents who taught me to XII focus on the things that will not vanish, to love and serve God, and who initiated me into a degree of intensity that makes the experience of life deeper and richer. I am grateful for Arianne, from whom I learned perseverance and vulnerability. We learned to see that life can never be taken for granted, but always is a gift. In the preparatory work for a forthcoming monograph on European musicians who fled Germany prior to and shortly after World war II, I feel that I was able to learn something about this remarkable musician, theologian, and pastor, who played an important role in the education of several generations of clergy and laity and who also brought to North American religious communities a knowledge of the rich musical traditions of Continental European composers. How did someone who began his career as a musicologist in Berlin, Germany in the 1930s end up in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada as Dean of a Lutheran Seminary? Leupold’s father, Anton Wilhelm (1868-1940), was organist at the Sankt Petri church, Berlin,1 and was the first organist to perform Max Reger’s entire organ works in Berlin.2 His mother Gertrud, née Igel, was an opera singer.

In1987 further research was done on the question of tune authorship and musical style; the material was revised several times in the years that followed. As the 500th anniversary of the Reformation approached, it was brought into its present form. An unexpected insight came from examining the tunes associated with the Luther’s hymn texts: Luther employed several types (styles) of melody. Viewed from later centuries it is easy to lump all his hymn tunes in one category and label them “medieval” hymns. Over the centuries scholars have studied many questions about each melody, especially its origin: did it derive from an existing Gregorian melody or from a preexisting hymn tune or folk song? In studying Luther’s tunes it became clear that he chose melody structures and styles associated with different music-making occasions and groups in society.

At that time, Ein feste Burg was sung not only in Germany, but also in other countries, used in a political context. At the beginning of the 20th century, for example, it was introduced through American missionaries to Korea. Luther’s Ein feste Burg was sung not only in worship services, but also outside of church. It played an important role for Korean Christians, especially during the Japanese colonization (1910-1945). Under the Japanese rule, Koreans aimed at the independence of their country. Among the activities by the resistance, the March 1st Movement [Samil Undong], which took place in 1919, was of significance. Although it was brutally oppressed by Japanese soldiers, it spread throughout the country.

Elisabeth Schneider-Böklen Elisabeth Cruciger – Nun, Minister’s Wife and First Lutheran Poetess1 The hymn Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn [Lord Christ, the only son of God] originating from the time of the Reformation is still sung today. It was written by Elisabeth Cruciger, a nun from Pomerania who had already been convinced by Johannes Bugenhagen of Martin Luther’s theology. In 1524, she married Caspar Cruciger, one of Luther’s co-workers, in Wittenberg, and in that same year her hymn was first published. Elisabeth Cruciger’s text combines biblical theology, parts of the patristic thinking and religious experience of female mysticism. Besides her hymn, a letter exists which is mentioned in another one written by Joachim, a baptised Jew in Stettin. In this letter Cruciger shows a very profound knowledge of the new Lutheran doctrine of Justification, and also empathy for Joachim’s spiritual situation. Elisabeth and Caspar Cruciger were married by Martin Luther in 1524. A document detailing the ceremony, discovered in 1717, reveals an anti-romantic view of marriage.     Word & World Volume 31, Number 1 Winter 2011 Heaven and Hell in Hymnody GRACIA GRINDAL eaven and hell have existed as destinations and places in the Western imagi- nation and in its literature since Homer. They were later Christianized, espe- cially by Dante in his Divine Comedy, but the places and the concepts have both fallen on hard times since the Enlightenment and the slow collapse of the three-story universe. Oddly enough, as our sense of the physical cosmos has ex- panded boundlessly, our spiritual cosmos seems to have shrunk. Heaven and hell have become something of an embarrassment. In what follows, I will look briefly at a very few of the many hymns that treat heaven and hell in the hymnals of living American Lutheran memory: The Service Book and Hymnal (1958), The Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), and, most recently, Evangelical Lutheran Worship (2006), concluding with some musings on what has happened poetically and theologically over the past fifty years.1 HELL Given the old saw that hell is more interesting than heaven, it is somewhat surprising to note that our treasury of hymns, even before the demise of the so-called three-story universe, has eschewed hell. Based on a structure created by Pastor Fritz Baltruweit (St Michaelis Monastery Hildesheim, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover), Pastor Marc Blessing (Ökumenische Stiftung Kloster Frenswegen), Canon Dr Heinrich Plock (Diocese of Osnabrück), Dr Dagmar Stoltmann-Lukas (Diocese of Hildesheim) and Pastor Dirk Stelter (Arbeitsfeld Ökumene, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover). The Genesis The first step: An ecumenical steering group determined the structure for the service before the conference and made the following basic decisions: • The topic of the service was the motto of the Catholics' Day 2008 in Osnabrück: „You set us free in the open“, Psalm 18:20 slightly modified. • The message of the Psalm was implemented by following the structure of a pilgrimage with five stations.

In einem Brief vom 8.7.1530 an Lazarus Spengler gibt Luther selbst in folgende In- terpretation: „ Von der Symbolik her steht das Kreuz auf dem Herz dafür, dass der Glaube an den Gekreuzigten uns selig macht und dass der Glaube das Herz in natürlicher Farbe lebendig erhält. Die weiße (silberne) Rose steht dafür, dass der Glaube Freude, Trost und Frieden gibt. Der goldene Ring soll ausdrücken, dass die Seligkeit im Himmel ewig währt, und wie Gold das höchste Erz ist, so soll die himmlische Seligkeit die köstlichste aller Freuden sein. Das Blau des Feldes steht für den Himmel und für himmlische Freude bzw. die Hoffnung darauf.“ Die Blarer waren ursprünglich Bürger von St. Gallen, aber von 1330 an ging die Fa- milie verstärkt nach Konstanz, handelte mit Leinwand und stieg unter die Ratsge- schlechter auf. Die Reformation spaltete die Konstanzer Familie in zwei Zweige. Die katholische Linie erlosch bald wieder, die protestantische überlebte länger und starb erst mit dem Major Philipp am 20.1.1865 aus.
