Martin Luther's “Mighty Fortress”
Martin Luther’s “Mighty Fortress” by Andreas Loewe and Katherine Firth artin Luther wrote the hymn Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott M(A Stronghold Fortress is our God) in the late 1520s as ain trost Psalm (“a psalm of comfort”), inspired by Psalm 46, “with its own newly composed tune.”1 The hymn does not render the full biblical text into metrical form, but rather provides a paraphrase, drawing on the major themes Luther identified in his commen- taries on the Psalm: “God is our confidence and strength” and “the heathens [nations, ohud] must despair and the kingdoms fall.”2 The hymn was written to encourage the faithful in the tumultuous and beleaguered first decade of the Reformation, when believers were forfeiting their worldly goods and relationships. At the same time, it was intended as a propagandistic weapon in the spiritual and actual battles against the Reformation’s many opponents.3 It quickly became an international feature of the Evangelical movement. In the four centuries since the words and music were first written, Ein feste Burg has often been appropriated as a hymn sung to reaffirm the earthly power and military prowess of Lutheran empires and German nationalists, particularly in the era centered around the Unification of Germany in 1871. The hymn has also been claimed as a psalm of spiritual consolation, especially after the complete defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. This article emphasizes the hymn’s reception from the 1520s to the present day. It offers a close reading of the German lyrics in the context of the Reformation and of Luther’s other writings, which document that the hymn was intended for spiritual encourage- ment. -

Women of the reformation Cornelia Schlarb 1. Introduction Since the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany) has proclaimed a Luther or reformation decade in 2008 in order to celebrate the beginning of the reformation 500 years ago, the interest in what and how women contributed to the spreading of the new reformatory ideas and live style has been increasing in Germany. The situation has been completely different when I was studying evangelical theology in Marburg and Heidelberg in the beginning of the 1980th. In that time German scholars, or rather female scholars, only started to research the bible and church history about women's contribution, although in other countries, like in the USA, Roland H. Bainton (1894-1984) had already published his book “Women of the Reformation in Germany and Italy” in 1971. It is very significant that it took 24 years to translate this book into German. In 1995 it had become available as paperback issue with the title “Frauen der Reformation. Von Katharina von Bora bis Anna Zwingli”. It contains seven biographies and a summarized description of women of the Anabaptist movement. It quickly became very popular and in 1996 already the third edition was published. In our lectures and seminars we only heard about Martin Luther, his life as monk and his conversion, about Luther´s posting of theses in 1517 in Wittenberg, about his central reformatory scriptures in the 1520th and the bible translation. 1 『ライプツィヒ・コラール集 ・Die Leipzig Choräle、BWV651~668a』 髙田重孝 作品概略 晩年の J・S・Bach(1685~1750)は若い頃に書いたコラールの作品の整理を始め、それらを 改訂した上で自分の手で書き写した。現在ベルリン国立図書館に保管されている手稿譜は、 バ ッハがライプツィヒ時代の 1730 年から 1740 年にかけて記入した楽譜で、 他の作品と共に 18 曲のコラール作品が書き込まれていて、そのコラール作品群を『 18 のコラール集』または『ラ イプツィヒ・コラール集』と呼んでいる。 ただし実際にバッハ自身が書き写したのは最初の 15 曲である。15 曲の内訳は、最初に 1730 年頃(45 歳)に 6 曲のオルガンのためのソナタ(ト リオ・ソナタ・BWV525~530)を記入した。その際にバッハはこのソナタを書き込むために必 要な倍の用紙を用意したが、その残りの部分は約 10 年間空白のままであった。それから 9 年 後、1739 年から 1742 年(57 歳)の間に 2 頁の空白をあ けて 13 曲のオルガンのためのコラー ルの作品(BWV651~663)を書いた。更に 5 年後の 1747 年(62 歳)、1746 年か 1747 年に 2 曲(BWV664~665)を記入した。そして 1747 年から 1748 年の間に 4 頁、2 つの見開き頁に、 1747 年にミーツラーの「音楽学協会・ Sozietät der musikalischen Wssenschaften」に入会す るに際して、印刷して提出したコラール『高き天より私はやってきて・ Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her』の旋律主題による カノン形式の変奏曲( BWV769)に修正を加えたものを書き 込んだ。この記入された後の頁の残りの部分と、現在は失われてしまった次の頁にかけて、コ ラール『私はここに貴方の御座の前に進みでて・ Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit』(BWV668) が書き込まれている。この手稿に記入したバッハの自筆譜はいずれも 浄書体で、作曲のために 作成した手稿から書き写したものであり,手稿の状態から、誰かに贈る目的ではなく、自らの 作品を整理保存するために作成したと考えられる。 バッハ自身が書き写したのはこの 15 曲ま でで、続く 2 曲は弟子であり、娘エリザベト・ユリアーナ・フデリカの夫・ヨハン・クリスト フ・アルトニコルが口述を筆記した。『主イエスはわれらを救い給う・ Jesus Christus,unser Heiland,』(BWV666)『聖霊来たれや、渇いた心に・ Komm,Gott Sch öpfer, Heiliger Geist』 (BWV667)この 2 曲を加えた 17 曲を『17 のコラール集』( BWV651~667)と呼ぶこともあ るが、ベルリンの手稿譜には、バッハが臨終の床でアルトニコルに口述筆記させた『苦しみと 悩みの中にある時・ Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein』(BWV668a)を加えて『 18 のコラー ル集』または『ライプツィヒ・コラール集』と呼ぶようになった。 15 曲の自筆のコラール曲とアルトニコルの筆写による 2 曲には、いずれもバッハがヴァイマー ル時代に作曲した原曲が残されていて、ある曲は大幅に拡大された曲と、 長さはそのままに細 部に手を加えて書き直した曲の 2 通りがある。手稿の最後の曲 『苦しみと悩みの中にある時・ Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein』(BWV668a)は、目の見えなくなったバッハが口述させ -

ABUSES UNDER INDICTMENT AT THE DIET OF AUGSBURG 1530 JARED WICKS, S.J. Gregorian University, Rome HE MOST recent historical scholarship on the religious dimensions of Tthe Diet of Augsburg in 1530 has heightened our awareness and understanding of the momentous negotiations toward unity conducted at the Diet.1 Beginning August 16, 1530, Lutheran and Catholic represent atives worked energetically, and with some substantial successes, to overcome the divergence between the Augsburg Confession, which had been presented on June 25, and the Confutation which was read on behalf of Emperor Charles V on August 3. Negotiations on doctrine, especially on August 16-17, narrowed the differences on sin, justification, good works, and repentance, but from this point on the discussions became more difficult and an impasse was reached by August 21 which further exchanges only confirmed. The Emperor's draft recess of September 22 declared that the Lutheran confession had been refuted and that its signers had six months to consider acceptance of the articles proposed to them at the point of impasse in late August. Also, no further doctrinal innovations nor any more changes in religious practice were to be intro duced in their domains.2 When the adherents of the Reformation dis sented from this recess, it became unmistakably clear that the religious unity of the German Empire and of Western Christendom was on the way to dissolution. But why did it come to this? Why was Charles V so severely frustrated in realizing the aims set for the Diet in his conciliatory summons of January 21, 1530? To Spite the Devil: Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora’s Wedding as Reform and Resistance Prepared by Diane V. Bowers, Ph.D. For Presentation to the Pacific Coast Theological Society, April 22, 2017 Introduction It is a popular and dramatic tableau in the imagination of Lutherans and historically-minded Christians, memorialized in story, art and film: the young monk Martin Luther stands before the entrance to the Castle Church in Wittenberg on All Saints Eve, October 31, 2017, and nails his “Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences,”1 or the 95 Theses, to the church door. When upon publication the theses became an instant best seller, Luther’s call to reform was carried throughout German speaking lands and beyond. This date is generally designated as the beginning of the Lutheran or German Reformation. Five years later, on Easter Eve, April 4, 1523, in an equally compelling but lesser-known action, twelve nuns, convinced by the teachings of the German reformation, risked their lives to escape from Marionthron Convent. The nuns had written to Martin Luther asking his help in obtaining their freedom, and Luther made the arrangements for them to escape hidden in the back of an empty delivery wagon. Nine of the twelve nuns were delivered to Martin Luther’s care in Wittenberg, and one was Katharina von Bora, who two years later in 1525 later 1 While there is no scholarly consensus as to whether Luther did in fact post the theses on the Castle Church door, this would have been in keeping with University custom.
