6 Summary The second half of the 19th century saw the crystallization of political consciousness among the Indian people. It also brought home the realization that some form of organization was necessary to promote the common interests of all Indians. And it was this realisation that led to the foundation of the Indian National Congress (INC) on 28 December 1885, with seventy-two persons meeting in the Hall of Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay. This led to the beginning of an organized political movement on an all- India level, which culminated in her winning freedom in August 1947.
