P he sculpture “Midnight kill” has waited a long time to be done. I’ve been carrying around the stone for Tfifteen years, since college actually. I be- lieve I was told that it was soapstone when I first acquired it, but if it is soapstone, it doesn’t act like it. This is actually the first sculpture that I’ve done since my college years. I finally had the time to tackle it in the summer of 2008 and with a small kit of soft stone tools and a lot of sandpaper I went to work. I had always envisioned the sculpture to be more abstract, like just the dorsal fin of some sea creature but when I actually put the stone on the bench, I just couldn’t find it again. My normal start to any sculpture is just to find a main curve or direction in the stone and start removing material to reinforce it. That’s one reason that I do a lot of my initial removal by hand, because it gives me time to continually look at the Dune Watcher, marble, 9’’ high shape that’s developing. Sculpture NorthWest Quarterly Jan/Feb/Mar 2010 4 t ‘Midnight Kill’ Eventually, I got enough of a rough shape that I needed to step back and really figure out what it was. I think that in this instance, my lack of any outside influence (or real experience for that matter) worked to my advantage. Since I wanted a flush, dynamic fit to the base I decided to do a plaster cast of the bottom of the sculpture and then carve the resulting block of plaster into the shape that I wanted. I then painted and sealed the base. It’s certainly not a perfect piece but it was a wonderful learning experience. I hope that you all enjoy it. U ‘Replenishing the Earth’ A water fountain Candyce at the wheel of her favorite tool by Candyce Garrett his granite sculpture was installed by Candyce at the entrance of the Santa Fe Farmers Market building in the recently refurbished Rail Yard Complex in Santa TFe, New Mexico. She was asked by the organizers of the Farm- ers Market to make a granite fountain for a newly completed building.

Robin OFFICERS: would check into it and let them know at next meeting. SARAH FRY PROJECT Ann reported that the pieces were being stored in the basement at UPDATE: City Hall. Ann would check with Molly to see if she had heard back on timeline for repairs to brickwork at the Corner Brick building. ART ON LOAN: Corrine stated that she would reach out to Shawn. SHAWN PETERSON PROJECT UPDATE: VINYL WRAP Nothing new to report on the project with ODOT. UPDATE: OTHER BUSINESS: Dean Reganess was present and visited with group regarding his trade: stone masonry. Dean is a third generation stone mason and had recently relocated to Baker City. Dean announced that he wanted to offer his help in the community and discussed creating a large community stone sculpture that could be pinned together. Dean also discussed stone benches with an estimated cost of $1200/each. Dean mentioned that a film crew would be coming from San Antonio and thought the exposure might be good for Baker. Corrine questioned if Dean had ideas to help the Public Arts Commission raise funds for public art. Dean mentioned that he would be willing to create a mold/casting of something that depicted Baker and it could be recreated and sold to raise funds.

    Soap Stone Sculpture NAME:____________ Soapstone carving is an ancient practice dating back more than 3000 years ago. An art gallery has commissioned you to create a soapstone sculpture reflecting a specific animal or Inukshuk. The final work must show clear evidence of an influence from the Northern Canadian style/period. You will gain appreciation of the art of Canada’s aboriginal peoples, develop problem solving skills in designing your own work in the Northern Canadian style with subtractive sculpture techniques, and learn to follow steps for cutting, carving, and polishing soap stone. You will first create 3 different conceptual sketches (different angles – front, side and back) , which will be evaluated. What is Soapstone? There are three different kinds of rocks found on the earth. They are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Soapstone is formed by changes in the structure of an igneous rock such as peridotite. These changes occur at low temperature and moderate pressure in the presence of water. Soapstone is then a metamorphic rock that forms in layers with different degrees of thickness. Soapstone, which is also known as steatite, is a soft rock which is made up mostly of the mineral talc. It feels soapy or oily and can be found in a variety of colours such as white, gray, or grayish-green. History: Cape Dorset is probably the most famous art producing community in Canada's north.
