SUMMARY ROME’S PHYSICIAN: GUIDO BACCELLI AND HIS LEGACY IN THE NEW ITALIAN CAPITAL Many Italian physicians played a more or less relevant role in the military, social and political events which paved the way to and accompanied the birth of the unitary State, which 150th anniversary falls in 2011, but probably just one of them, Guido Baccelli (1832-1916), left so many traces in the very landscape of the present-day Italian capital. Even if the millions of tourists pouring into Rome every year are not aware of it, the vision and tenacity of this celebrated physician lay behind quite a lot of the most typical and popular places of the Eternal City. Baccelli, as a politician, took care of his home town with the same kindness and effectiveness he put, as a physician, in the care of the sick. In 2011 Italy celebrates the 150th anniversary of its national unifica- tion, that is the birth of a unitary State from the seven little States which filled the Italian peninsula until then. But that process, started in 1861, would be accomplished only in 1870, with the conquest of the Papal States and the move to Rome of the capital city of the new Reign. Italy, Viale Consolare Valeria, Gazzi, 98100 Messina, Italy Through an extensive literature review it was possible to find at least twenty- Received: May 11, 2015; Accepted: June 26, 2015; two cases operated on in Italy in the nineteenth century. Published: June 29, 2015 The author emphasizes the pioneering aspects of the operations performed by Andrea Vacca’Berlinghieri (Pisa, 1813), Zanobi Pecchioli (Siena, 1835), Francesco Durante (Rome, 1884), and Guido Bendandi (Bologna, 1895). These cases are widely mentioned in the international literature on meningiomas, but other cases reported here were not cited in published reviews. It should be stressed that the results recorded in the cases examined in this study were generally positive, with a mortality rate of 28.6% and a good outcome in 71.4%. Although the literature has been extensively reviewed for this work, the research cannot be considered complete; likely at that time other cases of meningiomas were surgically treated in our country and it is realistic to believe that not all have been published. Souvenirs of Bologna in Sigmund Freud’s house Abstract In a Freud Museum’s photo, Sigmund Freud is pictured in his house, in Vienna. On the wall behind him, there are some reproductions of Italian monuments he had bought during his travels: three of them are from Bologna. Thanks to this picture, along with some postcards Freud writes to his family, it is possible a partial reconstruction of his stay in Bologna. The article proposes some interpretations about the picture itself and its bizarre “title” written on its mount. A typewritten copy of a letter sent, on 23 February 1877, by Augusto Murri, professor of internal medicine at the University of Bologna, to Francesco Crispi, Speaker of the Italian Parliament. This document was enclosed in a letter dated 6 March 1937 from Bartolo Nigrisoli, a distingued surgeon of Bologna, to Francesco Galdi, clinician of the University of Pisa. The third document is a handwritten reply from Galdi to Nigrisoli. Relevant information in all three documents are commented upon. Le tre lettere che costituiscono l’ossatura del presente contribu- to sono state acquistate dal Catalogo n. 176 del giugno 2010 della Libreria Bertocchi di Bologna, che recava la seguente dicitura: Documentazione Murri-Crispi.     La grande famiglia Murri Di Gabriele Bonazzi Bologna, in una data attorno al 1925. Il fascismo ha compiuto i primi passi al governo del Paese. Augusto Murri, celeberrimo medico e professore di medicina presso l'università, statura media, fisico asciutto, avanza riluttante al centro della scena. Ha passato abbondantemente gli 80 anni. Si colloca in piena luce. Di fianco a lui un'elegante poltroncina; sull'altro lato un attaccapanni cui è appeso un camice bianco e altri segni della professione medica. Libri sparsi tutto intorno. Murri sale su una pedana e si mette davanti a un leggio, da cui, si suppone, dovrà leggere qualche pagina. Ogni tanto si appoggia a un bastone da passeggio, a soggetto. E' visibilmente a disagio, avverte di essere ormai costretto a parlare davanti a un pubblico che attende impaziente di ascoltarlo. Vorrebbe scappare, ma sente che non può. Scruta la platea come alla ricerca di un pretesto che lo autorizzi a tacere, mette e toglie nervosamente gli occhiali. Sistema alcuni fogli sul leggio, poi, dopo una lunghissima pausa, ancora indeciso se sottoporsi o no a quella che per lui è una vera tortura, inizia a parlare, ma ancora con molta riluttanza. Murri - Ma no, no, lasciatemi stare... Non tormentatemi con questa idea di parlare in pubblico e raccontare di me... ora che sono vecchio. Mi si tronca il respiro soltanto a pensarci. Cosa volete ancora sapere? La verità? E' questo che volete sapere? Voi mi costringete a mentire spudoratamente a me stesso, perché di verità non ne conosco... La verità è inafferrabile. E il ricordo della vita passata è sempre più arruffato...

    [105] - 122 AUGUSTO MURRI COMMEMORAZIONE del Prof. GIACINTO VIOLA ordinario di clinica medica generale 18 Marzo 1933-XII Io penso che l'elettissimo pubblico al quale ho l'onore di parlare, in parte profano alla Medicina, non si attenda da me che mi addentri nella analisi anche sommaria delle opere scientifiche del Grande Clinico, cui è dedicata questa solenne commemorazione. Questa analisi, che sarebbe davvero la più eloquente di tutte le commemorazioni, potrà essere fatta in altra sede. Dovrebbe essere forse un lavoro collettivo degli allievi, di revisione di tutta la produzione del Maestro, che si inizia dal 1868 e va fino al 1924, la quale mettesse in rilievo, al lume dei più recenti progressi della medicina, tutte le verità resistenti al tempo e precorrenti i tempi, che quel Forte afferrò nella morsa dell'intelletto e rese terse e pure nella composta e classica eleganza della sua prosa. Solo allora potrebbe risultare in tutta la sua reale importanza il valore di quell'indirizzo metodologico, al quale dedicò la appassionata fede dell' Insegnante e del Ricercatore, dal primo giorno che salì la Cattedra di Bologna al giorno in cui si spense la luce del Suo pensiero. E neppure io ritengo di dover riepilogare qui la Sua biografia, quale è notissima per molti scritti che su di Lui apparvero in vari momenti della Sua vita ed in morte, a soddisfare una legittima richiesta del pubblico, poiché la Sua alta Personalità destò in Italia costantemente il più vivo interessamento.
