SUMMARY ROME’S PHYSICIAN: GUIDO BACCELLI AND HIS LEGACY IN THE NEW ITALIAN CAPITAL Many Italian physicians played a more or less relevant role in the military, social and political events which paved the way to and accompanied the birth of the unitary State, which 150th anniversary falls in 2011, but probably just one of them, Guido Baccelli (1832-1916), left so many traces in the very landscape of the present-day Italian capital. Even if the millions of tourists pouring into Rome every year are not aware of it, the vision and tenacity of this celebrated physician lay behind quite a lot of the most typical and popular places of the Eternal City. Baccelli, as a politician, took care of his home town with the same kindness and effectiveness he put, as a physician, in the care of the sick. In 2011 Italy celebrates the 150th anniversary of its national unifica- tion, that is the birth of a unitary State from the seven little States which filled the Italian peninsula until then. But that process, started in 1861, would be accomplished only in 1870, with the conquest of the Papal States and the move to Rome of the capital city of the new Reign. Two congress sessions were organized under the auspices of the Repertoire International de la Presse Musicale by H. Robert Cohen and Marcello Conati. The second, which took place in Parma, in the Sala Verdi of the Conservatorio "Arrigo Boito " on Sunday, 30 August from 1 lh30 to 13h, offered an extensive demonstra tion of the computer programs and laser printing techniques developed for the production of RIPM volumes at the Center for Studies in Nineteenth-Century Music of the University of Maryland at College Park. -

LE MIE MEMORIE ARTISTICHE Giovanni Pacini English translation: Adriaan van der Tang, October 2011 1 2 GIOVANNI PACINI: LE MIE MEMORIE ARTISTICHE PREFACE Pacini’s autobiography Le mie memorie artistiche has been published in several editions. For the present translation the original text has been used, consisting of 148 pages and published in 1865 by G.G. Guidi. In 1872 E. Sinimberghi in Rome published Le mie memorie artistiche di Giovanni Pacini, continuate dall’avvocato Filippo Cicconetti. The edition usually referred to was published in 1875 by Le Monnier in Florence under the title Le mie memorie artistiche: edite ed inedite, edited by Ferdinando Magnani. The first 127 pages contain the complete text of the original edition of 1865 – albeit with a different page numbering – extended with the section ‘inedite’ of 96 pages, containing notes Pacini made after publication of the 1865-edition, beginning with three ‘omissioni’. This 1875- edition covers the years as from 1864 and describes Pacini’s involvement with performances of some of his operas in several minor Italian theatres. His intensive supervision at the first performances in 1867 of Don Diego di Mendoza and Berta di Varnol was described as well, as were the executions of several of his cantatas, among which the cantata Pacini wrote for the unveiling of the Rossini- monument in Pesaro, his oratorios, masses and instrumental works. Furthermore he wrote about the countless initiatives he developed, such as the repatriation of Bellini’s remains to Catania and the erection of a monument in Arezzo in honour of the great poet Guido Monaco, much adored by him. -

THE BIRTH OF AN OPERA FIFTEEN MASTERPIECES from POPPEA TO WOZZECK Michael Rose IV • %'V • Norton & Company New York London Il Barbiere di Siviglia H E FIRST PERFORMANCE of Rossini's Barber was one of the great fiascos of operatic history. Yet only eight months earlier its composer had taken the first big step in what was to be the most daz- zling operatic career of the early nineteenth century. When Gioacchino Rossini arrived in Naples on 27 June 1815, he was twenty-three years old, he had fourteen operas to his credit, and he had never been this far from home in his life. Born in Pesaro and brought up in Bologna, his early successes had been largely confined to Venice and Milan, and the political divisions of the peninsula, recently reinstated after the Napoleonic interregnum, imposed at least two national borders between the Hapsburg regions of Lombardy and Venetia and the Bour- bon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. But the Italian passion for opera had no respect for political frontiers and already Rossini was being spoken of across Italy as the latest operatic phenomenon. Since Naples had been for a century and a half one of the most important, perhaps the most influen- tial, of Italian centres of operatic activity, the appointment of this stripling from the north as director of its royal theatres raised eager anticipation (and not a few eyebrows) as well as opening a new chapter in Rossini's life. But Italian opera in the early nineteenth century was a cutthroat business. The Neapolitan contract did not tie him exclusively to Naples, and now that he had freed himself from the Venice-Milan axis of earlier years, Rossini was keen to exploit the new possibilities of his position. -

Italy, Viale Consolare Valeria, Gazzi, 98100 Messina, Italy Through an extensive literature review it was possible to find at least twenty- Received: May 11, 2015; Accepted: June 26, 2015; two cases operated on in Italy in the nineteenth century. Published: June 29, 2015 The author emphasizes the pioneering aspects of the operations performed by Andrea Vacca’Berlinghieri (Pisa, 1813), Zanobi Pecchioli (Siena, 1835), Francesco Durante (Rome, 1884), and Guido Bendandi (Bologna, 1895). These cases are widely mentioned in the international literature on meningiomas, but other cases reported here were not cited in published reviews. It should be stressed that the results recorded in the cases examined in this study were generally positive, with a mortality rate of 28.6% and a good outcome in 71.4%. Although the literature has been extensively reviewed for this work, the research cannot be considered complete; likely at that time other cases of meningiomas were surgically treated in our country and it is realistic to believe that not all have been published. Souvenirs of Bologna in Sigmund Freud’s house Abstract In a Freud Museum’s photo, Sigmund Freud is pictured in his house, in Vienna. On the wall behind him, there are some reproductions of Italian monuments he had bought during his travels: three of them are from Bologna. Thanks to this picture, along with some postcards Freud writes to his family, it is possible a partial reconstruction of his stay in Bologna. The article proposes some interpretations about the picture itself and its bizarre “title” written on its mount. A typewritten copy of a letter sent, on 23 February 1877, by Augusto Murri, professor of internal medicine at the University of Bologna, to Francesco Crispi, Speaker of the Italian Parliament. This document was enclosed in a letter dated 6 March 1937 from Bartolo Nigrisoli, a distingued surgeon of Bologna, to Francesco Galdi, clinician of the University of Pisa. The third document is a handwritten reply from Galdi to Nigrisoli. Relevant information in all three documents are commented upon. Le tre lettere che costituiscono l’ossatura del presente contribu- to sono state acquistate dal Catalogo n. 176 del giugno 2010 della Libreria Bertocchi di Bologna, che recava la seguente dicitura: Documentazione Murri-Crispi. Raro documento dattiloscritto copia della lettera di Augusto Murri al ministro Crispi, datato 23 febbraio 1877, inviato al prof. Francesco Galdi direttore della Clinica Medica dell’Università di Pisa dal prof. Bartolo Nigrisoli su sua carta intestata. Si aggiunge una let- tera di ringraziamento manoscritta del Galdi allo stesso Nigrisoli, datata e firmata 8 maggio 1937.
