Extraordinary minds: The link between savantism and autism by Linda Marsa in Spectrum. “Some people with autism have an exceptional talent for music, math, art or language. What accounts for their extraordinary brains?” https://spectrumnews.org/features/deep-dive/extraordinary-minds-the-link-between-savantism-and- autism/Neurodiversity goes mainstream? 2. The next frontier in workplace diversity: brain differences by Katherine Reynolds Lewis in Fortune. http://fortune.com/2014/12/16/brain-differences-autism-workplace-diversity/ “A burgeoning civil rights movement is poised to change the workplace, and it revolves around differences in brain function. Advocates for neurodiversity say that it’s just as critical to business success as gender or racial diversity in the labor force.” ______________________________ More New Books Last time we reviewed Steve Silberman’s Neurotribes. Just out is another book of broad scope: A Different Key: The Story of Autism by John Donvan and Carol Zucker, The authors are experienced producers on all aspects of autism for ABC television in the US and in 2010 had an article published in the Atlantic magazine about one of the first American children to be diagnosed with autism in 1943. They have a less benign interpretation of the role of Hans Asperger than Silberman’s. Reviewers have noted that so disparate are the impacts of autism that we should perhaps talk about “autisms” plural, a constellation rather than a spectrum. Two early reviews: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/jan/17/different-key-story-autism-review-donvan-zucker https://spectrumnews.org/opinion/reviews/in-a-different-key-presents-symphony-of-autisms-history/ A Sampling of New Books added to the Autism Collection of the Kitchener Public Library in 2014 and 2015 The Autism Collection was begun in 2002 and has been sustained ever since by grants from Waterloo Wellington Autism Services.
