    PAHARI PAINTINGS FROM THE EVA AND KONRAD SEITZ COLLECTION part two francesca galloway ww.francescagalloway.com 1 2 The mountainous regions of northern India, historically divided into many small Rajput kingdoms, produced some of the most lyrical expressions of devotional and earthly love in Indian painting. This has always been Eva and Konrad Seitz’s passion. In this exhibition we primarily focus on Kangra, along with its major patrons and their religious and secular pursuits. Highlights include paintings from the ‘Tehri Garhwal’ and the ‘Lambagraon’ Gita Govinda, as well as rare portraits of Sansar Chand and his family. Vijay Sharma has identified a date equivalent to AD 1688 on the reverse of our Ragamala painting attributed to the circle of Devidasa at Nurpur or Basholi. This is an exciting discovery given the paucity of securely dated Basholi paintings. The collection of Eva and Konrad Seitz contains important examples from the different phases of Pahari painting, and is especially rich in Guler and Kangra paintings from the second half of the 18th century. This second and last selection from their collection (the first having been offered in London in autumn 2016) offers another opportunity to see an outstanding private collection of paintings. These two exhibitions will be followed by a book of the complete Eva and Konrad Seitz Pahari collection, written by the eminent authority on Indian painting J.P. Losty. This dissertation examines thumri texts from two perspectives: linguistic and contextual.     Appendix: Note on Theory and Methodology This book is not a history, exhaustive or otherwise, of same-sex unions. It traces some premodern textual precedents of such unions, to show that contemporary same-sex marriages have antecedents in traditional narratives. Although these narra- tives are separated by space, time, genre, and context, some patterns of representa- tion do emerge. I do not claim that the Indian female couples who married over the last two decades knew about these precedents. It is unlikely that they did, with the possible exception of the Sikhandin story. It is important, however, that the idea of same-sex union was, to the couples and their families, both thinkable and speakable. This intelligibility partly results from the fact that same-sex union was debated in the past, and, despite many discontinuities, continues to be discussed today. Hindu philosophical concepts about gender, love, sex, the spirit, rebirth, and change, are widely understood and cited, even among the illiterate and semiliterate. This is not a book about the writings of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered writers. I do not think that people’s ideas are fully reducible to or explicable by their biographies. In my view, the genders, sexual practices, sexualities, castes, and classes of the authors of texts I examine are not of decisive significance. First, these can rarely be fully known, and, second, I am interested not in particular authors’ biog- raphies but in the ongoing discussion and circulation of a set of ideas over time. In a small way, this book joins that discussion, as do the media reports of same-sex weddings in India.

With around 1 billion followers, Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world after Christianity and Islam. Hinduism is considered as the oldest religion of the World originating around 5000 years ago. It is the predominant spiritual following of the Indian subcontinent, and one of its indigenous faiths. Hinduism is a conglomeration of distinct intellectual or philosophical points of view, rather than a rigid common set of beliefs. Hinduism was spread through parts of South-eastern Asia, China, Korea, and Japan. Hindus worship a god with different forms. Evolution The origin of Hinduism dates back to prehistoric times. Some of the important evidences of prehistoric times: • Mesolithic rock paintings depicting dances and rituals gives evidence attesting to prehistoric religion in the Indian "subcontinent". • Neolithic pastoralists inhabiting the Indus River Valley buried their dead in a manner suggestive of spiritual practices that incorporated notions of an afterlife and belief in magic. • Other Stone Age sites, such as the Bhimbetka rock shelters in central Madhya Pradesh and the Kupgal petroglyphs of eastern Karnataka, contain rock art portraying religious rites and evidence of possible ritualised music.

    paintings for the pahari rajas Francesca Galloway foreword Almost fifty years have passed since I first started looking at Indian miniatures. When I think of the flow of masterworks, the major collections formed, dispersed and reformed throughout my career I realise that we have been witness to and part of a Golden Age for collecting Indian miniatures. Unlike most areas of European art, this is a field where, since the 1950s, many great paintings and some masterpieces have come to the market. These masterpieces continue to occasionally reappear today. The other important aspect of this area of collecting has been the advancement of scholarship and the shift in connoisseurship and taste, from quite a narrow focus – the pinnacle of Mughal painting in the 16th & 17th centuries – to a more appreciative insight into Deccani and later Mughal painting, and, especially, into Rajput painting. This phenomenon began in the 1970s, but has truly taken off since the 1990s. It is really landmark exhibitions that we have to thank for the dissemination of this knowledge and the enactment of this shift: The Indian Heritage at the V&A in 1982, India: Art and Culture, 1300–1900 at the Met in 1985, Pahari Masters at the Rietberg in 1992 and Masters of Indian Painting at the Rietberg and then the Met in 2011, to name some particularly key events. Of course, there have been numerous wonderful exhibits showcasing the art of the Subcontinent or focusing on more specific topics, but these four exhibitions were ground-breaking in opening our eyes to important aspects of Indian art that had hitherto remained unexplored.

LAVANYA Assistant Professor Departmentof History, University College of Arts and Social Sciences Osmania University, Hyderabad (Telangana) India ABSTRACT The Pahari School of Miniature painting and book illustration developed in the independent states of the Himalayan foothills between the 17th and 18th centuries and began to decline after 1800. The style of painting which flourished in Basohli, Jammu, Mankot, Nurpur, Chamba, Kangra, Guler, Mandi, and Garhwal in the hilly areas in the northwest has been termed the Pahari School. All paintings of these Schools provided vital information on women in Medieval India. Women in Pahari paintings have distinct facial features such as fish-shaped elongated eyes or large expressive lotus- shaped eyes, round chins, prominent noses, oval faces and receding foreheads. Krishna is also known as "Natwar"; hence these sounds came to be known as Natwari. What is more, the Kathak dance mnemonics are intertwined into the text of the poetry of the ashtachhap kavis. That these poets were deeply entrenched in the allied arts of music and dance is suggested by the fact that Surdas employed as many as 36 different Ragas and Raginis and one of Surdas’ padas mentions “Nritya karat ughatata sangeet pada / नत्ृ म कयत उघटत संगीत ऩद”. The great glory of this age of Bhakti poetry, which incidentally coincided with the Elizabethan age of English literature, is Tulsidas. He and Surdas between them are held to have exhausted the possibilities of the poetic art. There was a time when the common man could not understand the Ramayana as it was in Sanskrit. It was Tulsidas who simplified it, by translating it into the language of the common people, and made the divine epic accessible to all. Tulsidas is considered to be one of the greatest of the Hindu saints of India. He is considered to be one of the most famous 1 representatives of the Bhakti school of Hinduism. His literary work was most impressive. He was a Sanskrit scholar, but he is known for his works in Awadhi (A dialect of Hindi).
