It permits viewing a District beyond the prismatic image of a geographical or administrative unit, since the Gazetteer holistically captures its socio-cultural diversity, traditions, and practices, the creative contributions and industriousness of its people and luminaries, and builds on the economic, commercial and social interplay with the rest of the State and the country at large. The document which is a centrepiece of the District, is developed and brought out by the State administration with the cooperation and contributions of all concerned. Its purpose is to generate awareness, public consciousness, spirit of cooperation, pride in contribution to the development of a District, and to serve multifarious interests and address concerns of the people of a District and others in any way concerned. Historically, the ―Imperial Gazetteers‖ were prepared by Colonial administrators for the six Districts of the then Orissa, namely, Angul, Balasore, Cuttack, Koraput, Puri, and Sambalpur. After Independence, the Scheme for compilation of District Gazetteers devolved from the Central Sector to the State Sector in 1957.

  • Changing Ideas of Freedom in the Indian Postcolonial Context
    IDEALISM, ENCHANTMENT AND DISENCHANTMENT: CHANGING IDEAS OF FREEDOM IN THE INDIAN POSTCOLONIAL CONTEXT Yamini Worldwide, Colonial and Postcolonial Literature has represented processes of nation-formation and concepts of nationalism through experiments with forms of representation. Such experiments were quite predominant in the novel form, with its ability to incorporate vast spatial and temporal realities. Homi Bhabha’s Nation and Narration (2008) is a seminal volume discussing the innovations in the Twentieth Century Novel through a Postcolonial perspective and understanding these changes through the idea of National Literatures. The Cambridge Companion to Postcolonial Literary Studies (Neil Lazarus) and The Post-Colonial Studies Reader (Bill Ashcroft et al) present extensive discussions on the relationship between the politics of nation-formation and forms of fiction. In this article I offer a brief introduction to the evolution of the Hindi novel (1940s-1980s) with reference to the freedom movement and nationalist struggle in India. Benedict Anderson’s formulation regarding the significance of the genre of the novel in the process of nation-formation and Timothy Brennan’s concept of ‘The National Longing for Form’ published in Nation and Narration also establishes the novel as a genre representing, as well as creating, the Nation. Brennan writes It was the novel that historically accompanied the rise of the nations by objectifying the ‘one, yet many’ of the national life, and by mimicking the structure of the nation, a clearly bordered jumble of languages and styles… Its manner of presentation allowed people to imagine the special community that was the nation (Brennan, 2008: 49). Postcolonial theories have focussed on the relationship between realism and nationalism within the genre of the novel.

This person-centered style of religious authority is implicit in the teachings and identity of the scriptural sources of the Kulam!rga, a complex of traditions that developed out of more esoteric branches of tantric "aivism. For convenience sake, we name this model of religious authority a “Kaula idiom.” The Kaula idiom is contrasted with a highly influential notion of revelation as eternal and authorless, advanced by orthodox interpreters of the Veda, and other Indian traditions that invested the words of sages and seers with great authority.

Their cool­ headed and amiable temperament, their power of adaptabili­ ty and adjustability to any kind of circumstances~ envi­ ronment, whether regional or local, their exceptional sense of conciliation and assimilation - all these traits of their character helped them considerably in doing business in distant and unknown places, far away from their native land. However, human factors are conditioned, to some extent,by compulsions. The Marwaris are aware. that good public relations are a requisite for business transactions and that a rapport with the general public can best be estab­ lished by making cordial gesture. Their quick adoption of the local language helps them immensely in establishing this rapport. Initially, they used to migrate to a place in search of subsistence alone, keeping their womenfolk at home. So there had always been an identity crisis which they suffered from at the place of migration and to over- 344 come this crisis they thought it wise to mingle with the local people by participating in local festivals and attending social gatherings o.f other communi ties who lived there. Thereby they tried to join the mainstream of the society. CSIR‐National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, India (Email: [email protected]) Received: 19 September 2013; Accepted: 29 September 2013; Revised: 15 October 2013 Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 1 (2013): 104‐117 Abstract: During the maritime archaeological explorations a few sites of protohistoric in nature have been noticed along the Saurashtra coast. The trial excavations of a few sites namely Bet Dwarka and Bhokhira on the western Saurashtra coast yielded the remains of late Harappan phase and provide the insight into the settlement pattern of this period along the coast of Saurashtra. Majority of the sites are under cultivation thus original cultural deposition cannot be determined correctly, however, present deposit is between 20 and 75 cm. Radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dates from these sites provide a time bracket for the settlement between the 18th and the12th century BC. Other two sites namely Kanjetar and Kaj are situated on the mid‐Saurashtra coast were explored and the pottery assemblage is similar to those found at above mentioned site and also they have some close similarity with Pottery from Prabhasa Patana. Coastal exploration during the season of 2011‐12 near Madhopur yielded a small settlement with similar type pottery noticed at Antroli. Majority of the sites are situated very close to the coastal area and this provides us an opportunity to analyse the reason for settlements.
