HISTORY OF AVIATION AUTOR: AYLOR, John William Ransom EDITORA: Octopus Book A história da aviação remonta a tempos pré-históricos. CHEGUEI...E AGORA ME OUÇA AUTOR: LOBOS, Julio. E Mateus nunca havia cozinhado antes! Mas a vida é assim e aprender faz parte dela... EXPERIÊNCIA DE DEUS EM CORPO DE MULHER AUTOR: BINGEMER, Maria Clara Lucchetti EDITORA: Loyola Neste volume, Maria Clara reúne três textos.

Throughout his 50-year career, he has explored how mutable experiences of time, space, sound, movement and language provide an insecure foundation for our understanding of our place in the world.

  • Moteur Humaine
After suffering a dearth of attention, the intricate mechanico-anatomical illustrations produced under the guidance of German-Jewish surgeon, gynecologist, obstetrician, writer and polymath, Fritz Kahn (1888-1968), have attracted a plethora of publicity. In 2009 Uta and Thilo von Debschitz's monograph with 350 illustrations was published by Taschen.1 The following year, the first large-scale exhibition of his work was held in Berlin at the Medizinhistorisches Museum der Charité followed by several others including, in 2017-18, Transformer. Infografik 1920 bis 1945: Fritz Kahn, Otto Neurath et al at the Deutsches Buch und Schriftmuseum, Leipzig, and Can Graphic Design Save Your Life? at the Wellcome Collection.2 Nevertheless the most incisively analytical and theoretical is the recently published book, Body Modern: Fritz Kahn, Scientific Illustration and the Homuncular Subject, by the academic based at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in Uppsala, Michael Sappol. Judiciously Sappol chooses his quotes to convey Taylorist industrialization and visual modernity experienced by “the salaried masses” when Kahn embarked upon commissioning illustrations in 1922 from Roman Rechn, Alwin Freund-Beliani and Otmar Trester for Das Leben des Menschen. “The experience of this century mocks human laws”, wrote Joseph Roth. “Man surrounded by machines, is compelled to become a machine himself.” 3 Acutely aware of his beholders’ experience of machines, Kahn and his team of illustrators developed, according to Sappol, modernizing tropes of scientific and medical illustrations not to explain how the human body looks but to reveal how it functions as an invisible industrial process like a factory or machine. While Corbusier conceived the home as a machine to live in, Sappol surmizes that Kahn reconceived the body as a machine to live in.4 Fittingly industrial technologies were used to produce the 1,200 halftone photomechanical and photolithographic images illustrating this concept.

Airea: Arts and Interdisciplinary Research DOI: DOI: https://doi.org/10.2218/airea.5041 www.journals.ed.ac.uk/airea ARTICLE Music – Bodies – Machines: Fritz Kahn and Acousmatic Music Martine Louise Rossiter a This article provides an overview of the Music – Bodies – Machines: Fritz Kahn and Acousmatic Music project and accompanying suite of music – Der Industriepalast. The project is inspired by the work of infographics pioneer Fritz Kahn (1888-1968) who developed works such as Der Mensch als Industriepalast. There is a body of work examining Kahn’s work (Sappol, 2017; Von Debschitz, 2017; Doudova, Jacobs, et al.) that has revealed Kahn’s intent of making the human anatomy accessible to the non-specialised reader through visual metaphors; unlike the descriptive anatomical illustrations of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which show how the human body looks, Kahn’s works visually explain how internal structures work using concepts, metaphors, and allusions. This article explores some of the ways in which Kahn’s striking visual images have inspired the composition of five novel acousmatic works of music. The article starts with a survey of existing works making use of similar, extra- musical influences to examine how extra-musical influences such as infographics and painting may influence the formal design of acousmatic music. It goes on to consider how, exactly, the infographics of Fritz Kahn have been used within the project. In some cases, this guides the choice of particular materials (such as the sound of a beating heart to represent an image of a heart monitor), but in other cases, there is influence on phrasing, placement, and even the formal design of entire pieces.

Brainwaves In the history of brain research, the prospect of visualizing brain processes has continually awakened great expectations. In this study, Cornelius Borck focuses on a recording technique developed by the German physiologist Hans Berger to register electric brain currents; a technique that was expected to allow the brain to write in its own language, and which would reveal the way the brain worked. Borck traces the numerous contradictory interpretations of electroencephalography, from Berger’s experiments and his publication of the first human EEG in 1929, to its international proliferation and consolidation as a clinical diagnostic method in the mid-twentieth century. Borck’s thesis is that the language of the brain takes on specific contours depending on the local investigative cultures, from whose conflicting views emerged a new scientific object: the electric brain. Cornelius Borck is Professor of History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine and Science and Director of the Institute of History of Medicine and Science Studies at the University of Lübeck, Germany.
