A very dry month across the British Isles. Often changeable following a settled start. A chilly first Highest Temperatures – January 2019 week, followed by a milder interlude mid-month, but Station Temperature cold during the last 10 days with widespread snow and overnight frosts. 1st -9th - High pressure remained anchored across British Isles keeping conditions generally settled and dry. Despite a few very Cardiff, [Wales] 13.9˚C cold nights in places in the east, the high pressure was filled with stubborn stratiform cloud that refused to clear. The 7th to the 11th saw high pressure drift westwards allowing a few weak frontal Shawbury, Shropshire 13.2˚C systems to topple around the top of the high-pressure cell. This [England] producing a few spots of light rain in places, however many locations in southern parts of England remained largely dry. It Hurn, Dorset [England] 12.7˚C gradually turned, with the warmest day nationwide occurring on the 12th where temperatures widely peaked between 11-13°C across much of the country. 17th -25th – As low pressure drifted eastwards this brought a surge of cold arctic air from the north on the 17th. Sleet and snow Lowest Temperatures – January 2019 showers drifted into Scotland and northern parts of England. The 18th saw a band of rain, sleet and snow spreading westwards, this Station Temperature giving some small accumulations across the hills. 19th to the 22nd remained chilly with some sharp overnight frosts. , Aberdeenshire -14.3˚C [Scotland] 24-26th – A deepening area of low pressure advanced from the west on the 24th. This brought some of the wettest conditions of Loch Glascarnoch [Scotland] -13.0˚C the month, but also the mildest. A maximum of 14.2°C was recorded at Slapton, Devon. Heavy rain on the 26th across Scotland saw 33.1mm at Altnaharra. Tulloch Bridge [Scotland] -11.5˚C

27th-31st – As low pressure pulled away to east on the 27th it Topcliffe, North Yorkshire -10.7˚C introduced another surge of arctic air from the north. This [England] brought in frequent sleet and snow showers. The closing days of the month saw widespread bitterly cold temperatures, St Harmon, Powys, [Wales] -9.8˚C cumulating in a low of 14.3°C at Braemar, Aberdeenshire. The lowest temperatures recorded in the UK since 2013.
