Sunday 10 January 1982 (Lowest recorded temperature in the United Kingdom) Weather chart for 1200 UTC on 10 January 1982 General summary After a mostly dry night, Northern Ireland and much of Scotland had a dry, bright and frosty day, though there were snow and hail showers in the extreme north of Scotland. It was very cold, with a very severe overnight frost. The temperature at Braemar, equalled the record, (also set in Braemar on 11 February 1895) for the lowest officially recorded temperature in Britain (-27.2 °C). Wales and much of England was dry and bright, though southern counties were cloudy, with rain, sleet or snow in South West England. It was bitterly cold with a keen easterly wind adding to the severity of the overnight frost, whilst in Shropshire, sheltered from the wind by hills to the east, the temperature fell to a new English record low of -26.1 °C at Newport. Significant weather event The minimum temperature of -27.2 °C at Braemar, Aberdeenshire, equalled the previous lowest officially recorded temperature in Britain which was also set at Braemar on 11 February 1895. This temperature was equalled again at Altnaharra, Highland, on 30 December 1995. Box 3006, N-7001 Trondheim, Norway SYNOPSIS Primary (compactional) magnetic fabrics and multicomponent rem- anences are recognized in the Stoer and Torridon Groups. Low tempera- ture (LT) blocking remanences are randomized around 400-600°C and relate to a post-Torridonian magnetic overprint, possibly of early Mesozoic age. In the Stoer Group (and some Stoer boulders in the basal Torridon Group) LT remanences are partly or fully carried by magnetite (titanomagnetite). High temperature (HT) remanences are characterized by discrete unblocking above 600°C, having a specular haematite remanence carrier. Results of a conglomerate test of some Stoer boulders provides a positive stability test for HT remanences in the Torridon Group, and a convergence of evidence suggests that remanence acquisi- tion of both the Stoer and Torridon Groups was facilitated by both detrital and early diagenetic processes. -

However, a gravity low approximately 50 km east of the preserved Stac Fada Member outcrops has recently been proposed as the associated impact site. Here we aimed to shed light on the location of the impact structure through a provenance study of detrital zircon and apatite in five samples from the Stoer Group. Our zircon U-Pb data is dominated by Archaean grains (>2.5 Ga), consistent with earlier interpretations that the detritus was derived largely from local Lewisian Gneiss Complex, whereas the apatite data (the first for the Stoer Group) display a single major peak at ca. 1.7 Ga, consistent with regional Laxfordian metamorphism. The almost complete absence of Archaean-aged apatite is best explained by later heating of the >2.5 Ga Lewisian basement (the likely source region) above the closure temperature of the apatite U-Pb system (~375-450°C). -

AFTA data in samples of Precambrian basement and 18 Permian-Cretaceous sediments from onshore and onshore reveal multiple phases of post- 19 Caledonian cooling, viz: Triassic (beginning 245-225 Ma), Cretaceous (140-130 Ma; 110-90 20 Ma) and Cenozoic (65-60 Ma; 40-25 Ma; 15-10 Ma), all of which are interpreted at least in 21 part as recording exhumation. Basement and sedimentary cover rocks display similar thermal 22 histories, emphasising the regional nature of these episodes and implying that sedimentary 23 outliers represent the remnants of previously more extensive sequences. Significant 24 thicknesses of Jurassic rocks may once have covered northwest Scotland. -

KNOYDART A two-day bothy adventure in the wilderness of the Rough Bounds Overview The so-called 'Rough Bounds' of Knoydart – often described as Britain's last wilderness – are difficult to reach. Getting to the start of the route involves either a boat trip or long car journey along a winding, 20 mile single-track road. Cut off from the UK road network, the peninsula is a wild place of rugged mountains, remote glens and fjord-like sea lochs. This spectacular area includes three Munros and its coastal views take in Skye and the islands of the Inner Hebrides. In the 19th century, the peninsula fell victim to the Highland clearances but since 1999, after huge fundraising efforts, the land has been owned and managed by its own small community. Some days you won’t bump into another soul in here – although you may spot minke whales, eagles, otters and stags. Despite its inaccessibility, there are good paths connecting the glens and these provide exceptional running through challenging terrain. This fastpacking circuit is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the unique landscape.
