Sunday 10 January 1982 (Lowest recorded temperature in the United Kingdom) Weather chart for 1200 UTC on 10 January 1982 General summary After a mostly dry night, Northern Ireland and much of Scotland had a dry, bright and frosty day, though there were snow and hail showers in the extreme north of Scotland. It was very cold, with a very severe overnight frost. The temperature at Braemar, equalled the record, (also set in Braemar on 11 February 1895) for the lowest officially recorded temperature in Britain (-27.2 °C). Wales and much of England was dry and bright, though southern counties were cloudy, with rain, sleet or snow in South West England. It was bitterly cold with a keen easterly wind adding to the severity of the overnight frost, whilst in Shropshire, sheltered from the wind by hills to the east, the temperature fell to a new English record low of -26.1 °C at Newport. Significant weather event The minimum temperature of -27.2 °C at Braemar, Aberdeenshire, equalled the previous lowest officially recorded temperature in Britain which was also set at Braemar on 11 February 1895. This temperature was equalled again at Altnaharra, Highland, on 30 December 1995. CULTURE AND NATURE: THE EUROPEAN HERITAGE OF SHEEP FARMING AND PASTORAL LIFE RESEARCH THEME: SHEEP BASED CUISINE SYNTHESIS REPORT FIRST DRAFT By Zsolt Sári HUNGARIAN OPEN AIR MUSEUM January 2012 INTRODUCTION The history of sheep consume and sheep based cuisine in Europe. While hunger is a biologic drive, food and eating serve not only the purpose to meet physiological needs but they are more: a characteristic pillar of our culture. Food and nutrition have been broadly determined by environment and economy. At the same time they are bound to the culture and the psychological characteristics of particular ethnic groups. The idea of cuisine of every human society is largely ethnically charged and quite often this is one more sign of diversity between communities, ethnic groups and people. In ancient times sheep and shepherds were inextricably tied to the mythology and legends of the time. According to ancient Greek mythology Amaltheia was the she-goat nurse of the god Zeus who nourished him with her milk in a cave on Mount Ida in Crete. When the god reached maturity he created his thunder-shield (aigis) from her hide and the ‘horn of plenty’ (keras amaltheias or cornucopia) from her horn. Sheep breeding played an important role in ancient Greek economy as Homer and Hesiod testify in their writings. Indeed, during the Homeric age, meat was a staple food: lambs, goats, calves, giblets were charcoal grilled. In several Rhapsodies of Homer’s Odyssey, referring to events that took place circa 1180 BC, there is mention of roasting lamb on the spit. Homer called Ancient Thrace „the mother of sheep”. -

General Concerning emigration from Great Britain prior to 1815, only fragmentary statistics are available, for before that date no regular attempt was made to measure the outflow of population.For some years before the treaty of peace with France, under which Canada in 1763 became a colony of the United Kingdom, a certain number of emigrants from Great Britain to the British North Amer- ican colonies were reported, but no reliable figures are available. During the five years 1769—1774 there was an emigration, probably approaching 10,000 persons per annum,2 from Scotland to North America, and substantial numbers also left England for the same destination.It has been estimated by Johnson3 that during the first decade of the nineteenth century the annual emigration from the whole of the United Kingdom to the American Continent ex- ceeded 20,000 persons, the majority going from the Highlands of Scotland and from Ireland. Emigration can be considered from two distinct aspects: (a) from the point of view of the force attracting people to other countries; (b) from the point of view of the force expelling people from their own country. -

A Welsh Classical Dictionary
A WELSH CLASSICAL DICTIONARY DACHUN, saint of Bodmin. See s.n. Credan. He has been wrongly identified with an Irish saint Dagan in LBS II.281, 285. G.H.Doble seems to have been misled in the same way (The Saints of Cornwall, IV. 156). DAGAN or DANOG, abbot of Llancarfan. He appears as Danoc in one of the ‘Llancarfan Charters’ appended to the Life of St.Cadog (§62 in VSB p.130). Here he is a clerical witness with Sulien (presumably abbot) and king Morgan [ab Athrwys]. He appears as abbot of Llancarfan in five charters in the Book of Llandaf, where he is called Danoc abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 179c), and Dagan(us) abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 158, 175, 186b, 195). In these five charters he is contemporary with bishop Berthwyn and Ithel ap Morgan, king of Glywysing. He succeeded Sulien as abbot and was succeeded by Paul. See Trans.Cym., 1948 pp.291-2, (but ignore the dates), and compare Wendy Davies, LlCh p.55 where Danog and Dagan are distinguished. Wendy Davies dates the BLD charters c.A.D.722 to 740 (ibid., pp.102 - 114). DALLDAF ail CUNIN COF. (Legendary). He is included in the tale of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’ as one of the warriors of Arthur's Court: Dalldaf eil Kimin Cof (WM 460, RM 106). In a triad (TYP no.73) he is called Dalldaf eil Cunyn Cof, one of the ‘Three Peers’ of Arthur's Court. In another triad (TYP no.41) we are told that Fferlas (Grey Fetlock), the horse of Dalldaf eil Cunin Cof, was one of the ‘Three Lovers' Horses’ (or perhaps ‘Beloved Horses’). -
