Due to changes in retail and commercial patterns, the closure of retail shops caused a lack of variety and mobility in Falkirk’s high street. This addresses the need to reintroduce new and diverse energies in the high street. Falkirk is also the social and economic centre to 20 nearby dependent towns. Hence, the revitalisation of the Falkirk High Street is crucial not only for the local community but for the wider region. In a broader sense, the study of Falkirk town centre demonstrates the need for new purpose and vibrancy in many other high streets in Scotland today as they struggle to survive.     PROJECT BACKGROUND Our Mission Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels - Developing Community Action (SSRS-DCA) is a project to secure the long-term future of red squirrels in Scotland by building capacity among communities of volunteers and land managers, empowering them to take on and take ownership of some of the essential protection measures required to save the nation’s red squirrels. Introduction Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels - Developing Community Action (SSRS-DCA), focuses upon one of our most charismatic and well-loved mammals – the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). Once widespread, red squirrels have undergone a catastrophic population decline primarily due to competition from the non-native invasive, American grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). There are now only c.160,000 red squirrels remaining in the UK of which 120,000 occur in Scotland – 75% of the remaining UK red squirrel population. Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS) was formed to reverse this decline and create the conditions for this mammal to thrive in future. Over the last 8 years this innovative SSRS partnership trial project has established that it is possible to halt the decline of red squirrels over a wide area via strategically targeted and co-ordinated landscape-scale grey squirrel control. The initiative has enabled reds to re- establish in many areas. We have now reached a point where we are beginning to understand the scale of the conservation challenge we face, and more importantly, how much it might cost to secure the future of red squirrels in Scotland and the UK in the longer term. A ‘silver bullet’ solution such as an oral vaccine for Squirrelpox, a contraceptive for grey squirrels, or a natural predator favouring grey squirrels over reds as prey (e.g.

Some content variation still remains as the documents have been revised rather than rewritten, The information has been updated with input from the relevant Local Authorities. Poor performance by Scottish regions is blamed mainly on the collapse of the traditional basic industries, such as shipbuilding and heavy industry in cities, and a lack of investment in rural-based regions. Therefore, the region is now being seen as the appropriate level, for formulating strategies to improve business competitiveness and create employment and for that reason, such policies are principally aimed at reducing unemployment in areas, where it is persistently high and industrial clusters are seen as a constituent of the solution, to this problem. The introduction of industrial clustering strategy will enhance the promotion of innovation, as well as the performance of individual companies for the reason that, innovation is of significance not only for increasing the wealth of nations in the narrow sense of increasing prosperity, but also in the more fundamental sense of enabling people to do things, which have never been done before.

    THE BRITISH ISLES AND NORDIC NATIONS Chapter 15 A LITTLE CONFUSING…. ¡ UK refers to the political union between the countries. -Sovereign state but nations are also individual countries. -Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. ¡ Great Britain is the official collective name of England, Scotland, and Wales. ¡ British Isles-Geographical term relating to England, Ireland, and 5000 surrounding islands. -Only refers to geography, not nationality. A LITTLE CONFUSING…. ENGLAND ENGLAND ¡ The largest island in the British Isles is Great Britain. ¡ England is the most densely populated area in the British Isles. -80% of region’s population lives here. ¡ Landscape is made up of 3 areas: 1. Highlands-band of hills running along England’s west coast. 2. Midlands-coal that fueled the Industrial Revolution. 3. Lowlands-productive farms. Physical Features We can divide Scotland’s landscape into three areas. The Highlands and Islands. The Central Lowlands. The Southern Uplands. Highlands and Islands The Highlands of Scotland have mountain ranges like the Grampians, the Cuillins and the Cairngorms. These mountains were carved by the movement of glaciers during the last ice age. In the West of the Highlands there are mountains that can be up to 1200 Ben Nevis metres high. The summit of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, is 1344m above sea level. Fossils have been found in the North West Highlands from 750 million years ago. These are some of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Wanlockhead The Cuillins Merrick Highlands and Islands Highland mountains are popular in summer and winter with walkers, climbers and skiers. They are beautiful but can be very dangerous places when the weather changes. The Cuillin mountains are found on the Isle of Skye. They are known as the Red Ben Nevis Cuillin and the Black Cuillin. The Red Cuillin in the east are soft and rounded whereas the Black Cuillin in the west are sharp and jagged.
