Sunday 10 January 1982 (Lowest recorded temperature in the United Kingdom) Weather chart for 1200 UTC on 10 January 1982 General summary After a mostly dry night, Northern Ireland and much of Scotland had a dry, bright and frosty day, though there were snow and hail showers in the extreme north of Scotland. It was very cold, with a very severe overnight frost. The temperature at Braemar, equalled the record, (also set in Braemar on 11 February 1895) for the lowest officially recorded temperature in Britain (-27.2 °C). Wales and much of England was dry and bright, though southern counties were cloudy, with rain, sleet or snow in South West England. It was bitterly cold with a keen easterly wind adding to the severity of the overnight frost, whilst in Shropshire, sheltered from the wind by hills to the east, the temperature fell to a new English record low of -26.1 °C at Newport. Significant weather event The minimum temperature of -27.2 °C at Braemar, Aberdeenshire, equalled the previous lowest officially recorded temperature in Britain which was also set at Braemar on 11 February 1895. This temperature was equalled again at Altnaharra, Highland, on 30 December 1995. Case Study 9 - Scotland North Coast 9.1. Introduction The North coast is 560km in length, running from the north-west at Cape Wrath eastwards to Duncansby Head and John O’Groats, with the Orkney Isles lying close offshore, and the Shetland Isles further into the North Sea. Its characteristics are varied with the North Sea interacting for the most part with rocky sea cliffs interspersed by small bays. As one of the least inhabited areas of Scotland there are a small number of abandoned villages and ruins and a few ports and fishing villages, which have stood the test of time, forced down to the coast by the rugged Highlands of the hinterland. The coastline is more structured along this part, characterised by a series of headlands, small bays and sandy beaches - a product of erosion themselves - acting as a natural buffer and providing important dune habitats for flora and fauna (Mendum et al., 20011). There is a small but eclectic mix of socio-cultural development in this area, retaining a distinctive Nordic influence whilst including the resting and submission point of wartime enemies, remnants of villages created or dispersed by the Highland Clearances, a chain of fifteenth century seaside mansions and a retired nuclear reactor (Barling et al., 19962). 9.1.1. Geology & Geomorphology The structure of the coastline is relatively solid in comparison to the fragmented western coast, with 74% (416km) comprised of hard or mixed geology and only 1% (7km) of soft coastline (Fitton et al., 20173). The geology of the area runs in strikes from south-west to north-east changing along the coastline from west to east. -

A Brief History of Inveraray Inveraray, at the head of Loch Fyne, owes its prominence to the rebuilding of Inveraray Castle, seat of the Duke of Argyll, in the 18th century. The town's history, however, goes back much further, since it was made a Royal Burgh in 1638 by Charles I. The Argyll family, who hold the chieftainship of the Clan Campbell, have been important players in Scottish history, with a happy knack of usually picking the winning side during centuries of bloody inter-clan feuding and bitter political in-fighting. The Campbells' contentious massacre at Glencoe of their rival MacDonalds in 1692 is long remembered, but their positive role in shaping modern Scotland cannot be overstated. -

Crystalline Silica, Quartz (CAS No. 14808-60-7) Crystalline Silica, Cristobalite (CAS No. 14464-46-1) Crystalline Silica, Tridymite (CAS No. 15468-32-3) Diatomaceous earth (CAS No. 61790-53-2) This dossier on crystalline silica, quartz, cristobalite and tridymite and diatomaceous earth presents the most critical studies pertinent to the risk assessment of these substances in their use in drilling muds and cement additives. This dossier does not represent an exhaustive or critical review of all available data. The majority of information presented in this dossier was obtained from the ECHA database that provides information on chemicals that have been registered under the EU REACH (ECHA). Where possible, study quality was evaluated using the Klimisch scoring system (Klimisch et al., 1997). For the purpose of this dossier, crystalline silica, quartz (CAS No. 14808-60-7) has been reviewed as representative of crystalline silica cristobalite and tridymite. Crystalline silica, quartz is also considered representative of diatomaceous earth, as they both consist mainly of silicon dioxide. Screening Assessment Conclusion – Crystalline silica, quartz, cristobalite and tridymite and diatomaceous earth are classified as tier 1 chemicals and require a hazard assessment only. 1 BACKGROUND Crystalline silica is a common mineral found in the earth's crust. Materials like sand, stone, concrete and mortar contain crystalline silica. It is also used to make products such as glass, pottery, ceramics, bricks and artificial stone. Silica, in the form of sand, is used as the main ingredient in sand casting for the manufacture of metallic components in engineering and other applications. The high melting point of silica enables it to be used in such applications. -

The ability of a material to resist surface wear. Book Matched Absorption Layout wherein slabs are cut to create a mirror image of each other. The relative porosity of the material. Materials with low absorption will be less prone to staining. Materials with high-absorption may not be suitable for all applications, specifically kitchen countertops that come into regular contact with oils or pigmented acidic liquids such as wine or balsamic vinegar. The NC500 route passes over dozens of salmon rivers, and through some of the best wild brown trout fishing country in Europe. In general, the best trout fishing in the region will be found on lochs, as the feeding is generally richer there than in our rivers. Trout fishing on rivers is also less easy to find as most rivers are fished primarily for Atlantic salmon. Scope This guide is intended as an introduction to some of the main trout fishing areas that you may drive through or near, while touring on the NC500 route. For each of these areas, you will find links to further information, but please note, this is not a definitive list of all the trout fishing spots on the NC500. There is even more trout fishing available on the route than described here, particularly in the north and north-west, so if you see somewhere else ‘fishy’ on your trip, please enquire locally. Geological evidence for lateral emplacement preserved within exposed dykes 18 includes aligned fabrics of vesicles and phenocrysts, striations on wall rocks and the anisotropy 19 of magnetic susceptibility. In this paper, we present geometrical evidence for the lateral 20 emplacement of segmented dykes restricted to a narrow depth range in the crust. Near-total 21 exposure of three dykes on wave cut platforms around Birsay (Orkney, UK) are used to map out 22 floor and roof contacts of neighbouring dyke segments in relay zones. The field evidence 23 suggests emplacement from the WSW towards the ENE. Geometrical evidence for the lateral 24 emplacement of segmented dykes is likely more robust than inferences drawn from flow- 25 related fabrics, due to the prevalence of ubiquitous ‘drainback’ events (i.e. magmatic flow 26 reversals) observed in modern systems.
