Inveraray Jail - Prisoner Records INVERARAY JAIL - PRISONER RECORDS http://www.inverarayjail.co.uk/ USE THE EDIT / FIND ON TOOLBAR TO SEARCH NAMES and ENTRIES BY TOWN and VILLAGE By tradition and history 'the county town Argyll, Inveraray's courthouse and prisons, designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1813, after original plans by Robert Reid in 1807, opened in 1820 - Whilst Reid's original plans hadd included a courthouse and three prisons - one for males, one for females and one for debtors - The Prison Commissioners, lacking finances, had to be content with building only the courthouse and but one prison, eight cellss contained in its two floors - Following the 1839 Prisons (Scotland) Act, a second prison, separating men and women and designed by Thomas Brown of Edinburgh, was opened at the end of 1848, the new three-storied prison having twelve cells, an exercise gallery and a pair of outdoor exercise yards, the idea of separating male and female prisoners stemming from the somewhat misguided persuasion that such a system gave prisoners time to reflect upon their sins ! After the passing of the 1877 Prisons (Scotland) Act, the responsibility for the running and financing prisons taken away from local authorities, small local prisons were successively closed in favour of large prisons, such as Glasgow's 1882-built Barlinnie Prison and though Inveraray's jail, the last of the small prisons, was closed on August 31, 1889, courts continued to sit in Inveraray's courthouse until around 1954.4. After an extensive programme of restoration was undertaken by The Scottish Office in the 1980's, the building then lying empty for some years, Inveraray Jail was opened to the public as a 'visitor attraction' in May 1989 and the records of more than 4,000 of its Victorian prisoners put online for the interest of family history researchers. While some may prefer to 'trawl' Inveraray Jail's own list of prisoner records at http://www.inverarayjail.co.uk/prison- records/all.asp the entries here have been sorted by 'town' or village or parish, some spellings and names sometimes differing slightly from those in use today and the surnames, in the case of each 'town' or village or parish entry, areare then listed in alphabetical order, it thus easier for researchers to gain a quick overview of 'goings ons' in particular areaseas or even in particular families in these areas ! Use the EDIT / FIND facility on the computer's toolbar(s) to pursue anything of interest and click on 'More Info' to access the detail(s) of the crime(s) held in Inveraray Jail's records - Record entries will generally give a reference number, note an individual's full name and address, the individual's age, marital status and occupation, a trial date and the name of the judge or Justice of The Peace on the bench, detail the crime(s), the conviction(s) and the court's sentence - If the individual is unfortunate enough to be to be sentenced to transportation, the records should alsoso identify the ship's name, its departure date, destination and arrival date and, in most cases, the 'other information' on an individual's record will give some, sometimes much, detail of the case against the prisoner(s) -- AN EXTRACT of prisoners unfortunate enough to be transported will be found at the end of this document, beginning on page 94. • Guest Directory Change of Ownership & Revival of a Famous Name
Guest Directory Change of Ownership & Revival of a Famous Name The hotel was purchased by the Byrne family in the summer of 2015, returning the business to local ownership for the first time in many years. Opened in 1755 to national acclaim, the hotel was known as “The Inveraray Inn”. Our first act as new owners was to reinstate the original name. Our family has a long history in the hotel trade, is local to Argyll and also owns the nearby Best Western hotel in Crianlarich and the beautiful Ivy House, our Front Street neighbour (ask at Reception for booking details). Since purchasing the hotel, we have invested more than £1 million in a full and sympathetic refurbishment of this iconic and historic building. We hope that you are as pleased with the "new" hotel as we are. Please enjoy your stay. A Brief History of Inveraray Inveraray, at the head of Loch Fyne, owes its prominence to the rebuilding of Inveraray Castle, seat of the Duke of Argyll, in the 18th century. The town's history, however, goes back much further, since it was made a Royal Burgh in 1638 by Charles I. The Argyll family, who hold the chieftainship of the Clan Campbell, have been important players in Scottish history, with a happy knack of usually picking the winning side during centuries of bloody inter-clan feuding and bitter political in-fighting. The Campbells' contentious massacre at Glencoe of their rival MacDonalds in 1692 is long remembered, but their positive role in shaping modern Scotland cannot be overstated.

Having satisfied ourselves that the council’s consultation and engagement exercises conformed with its participation statement, our examination of the plan commenced on 23 May 2014. We have completed the examination, and now submit our report, enclosing one bound copy. In our examination we considered all 148 issues arising from unresolved representations which were identified by the council. In each case we have taken account of the summaries of the representations and the responses, as prepared by the council, and the original representations, and we have set out our conclusions and recommendations in relation to each issue in our report. The examination process also included a comprehensive series of unaccompanied site inspections and, for some issues we requested additional information from the council and other parties. We did not require to hold any hearing sessions. Subject to the limited exceptions as set out in Section 19 of the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997 and in the Town and Country Planning (Grounds for Declining to Follow Recommendations) (Scotland) Regulations 2009, the council is now required to make the modifications to the plan as set out in our recommendations.

  • Clergy Sexual Abuse: Annotated Bibliography of Conceptual and Practical Resources
Clergy Sexual Abuse: Annotated Bibliography of Conceptual and Practical Resources. Preface The phenomenon of sexual abuse as committed by persons in fiduciary relationships is widespread among helping professions and is international in scope. This bibliography is oriented to several specific contexts in which that phenomenon occurs. The first context is the religious community, specifically Christian churches, and particularly in the U.S. This is the context of occurrence that I best know and understand. The second context for the phenomenon is the professional role of clergy, a religious vocation and culture of which I am a part. While the preponderance of sources cited in this bibliography reflect those two settings, the intent is to be as comprehensive as possible about sexual boundary violations within the religious community. Many of the books included in this bibliography were obtained through interlibrary loan services that are available at both U.S. public and academic libraries. Many of the articles that are listed were obtained through academic libraries. Daily newspaper media sources are generally excluded from this bibliography for practical reasons due to the large quantity, lack of access, and concerns about accuracy and completeness. In most instances, author descriptions and affiliations refer to status at time of publication. In the absence of a subject or name index for this bibliography, the Internet user may trace key words in this PDF format through the standard find or search feature that is available as a pull-down menu option on the user’s computer. The availability of this document on the Internet is provided by AdvocateWeb, a nonprofit corporation that serves an international community and performs an exceptional service for those who care about this topic.

  • A Walk on the Beach at the Southern Tip of Rosneath Peninsula, Argyll & Bute
A walk on the beach at the southern tip of Rosneath Peninsula, Argyll & Bute. The air, the water and the land, and sadly, the litter. Tam Ward. 2019. A tiny part of Scotland – with so much to offer. Rosneath Peninsula and Upper Clyde Estuary, The southern tip of Rosneath Peninsula Argyll & Bute 1 The sky was a bland but beautiful shade of pale blue interrupted only by occasional and ever changing clumps of fluffy topped white and grey clouds, constantly modifying themselves into slowly moving and ever changing shapes, of curly topped travellers heading to some unknown destination across the horizons. The airborne islands of pearly white seemed endless in their seemingly mysterious source as the continued their journey – appearing from somewhere – and disappearing to – another place. Gareloch Gareloch and Helensburgh The skyward scene is only occasionally interrupted by the apparently motiveless flight of a bird or flock of them, sometimes alone but on other occasions as a flight of well-meaning direction, especially at some specific spot on the beach where they will swoop down as if with a single mind, perhaps sensing a good spot for lunch, or just taking a chance on one. Further out, especially if the sea is flat, the expert divers of gannet, tern or cormorant will streak down and disappear in a little flash of sparkling water, to erupt again some distance away, and If they were lucky, as they usually are – with their beak held quarry. Now and then a frenzy of such activity by a gang of birds would indicate a hapless shoal of fish had been detected near the surface.
